After a stressful not-moving traffic experience for more than an hour, just two blocks from this hotel in downtown Oaxaca, you’d expect to at least find someone waiting at the front desk to check you in. No one came for almost 15 minutes.
Instead we were welcomed by the crazy loud noise of a jackhammer in front lifting the pavement. The street was closed to traffic, so the suitcases have to be rolled from the street beyond and after trying to find parking (btw, you’re on your own for that too).
The rooms do not have a small refrigerator and they don’t have a TV. However, the hotel has a security camera system throughout with numerous screens so no matter where you are, they are watching you constantly.
“Unforeseeable circumstances” as they referred to in an email the day before our arrival, like street work, is one thing but not specifying about the kind of noise by the jack-hammering right in front, dusty uneven terrain, not mentioning that the street entrance to access premises was closed to vehicles was just wrong. The hotel withheld information and by the time we were in, we were too hot, too tired, too frustrated and we didn’t want to be stuck in outside traffic again. They knew we were pretty much tapped.
Not happy with this situation we’d have liked to change hotels but the car was finally parked, so we ask for a break in the price if we stayed, the manager pretty much said “No and ok with me if you go somewhere else, if you find something else…”
After-the-fact apologies don’t count! 2 stars is being generous!
Centrally located, reasonably clean, and the staff is friendly.
The entrance features a photo of a nude woman grabbing her genitalia, the “library” has a red light and a matted floor.
That said, this hotel prioritizes style over basic comfort and safety. The property is very dark throughout, and stairwells lack proper lighting and handrails—problematic for anyone with mobility concerns, children, or anyone one mezcal too many. There is no elevator and the restaurant is on the third floor.
Admittedly, I am 73, have had knee surgery, and rely on handrails, but I have traveled extensively and know what true luxury looks like. This is not it.
Room safes are too small for a laptop, and the platform beds extend away from the bed creating a hazard in low light.
May appeal to design-focused travelers, but not recommended for families, older guests, or those expecting a true luxury experience.
Very pretty property
Large common spaces
Air conditioned rooms
Friendly staff
Location / street construction
Over charging on laundry bags ($50 USD)
Lovely staff and beautiful design throughout
Busy streets but not a dealbreaker
Beautiful courtyard and terrace. Room was comfortable but the lighting was intense and cold. Great location and the staff was exceptional.
I wish they would leave at least two coffee pods per person in the room.

El staff increible!! Nos ayudaron con todas las peticiones que tuvimos, siempre super amables y atentos. La habitacion super comoda, limpia, las instalaciones tambien, el desayuno delicioso. Lastima que aun hacia frio pero la alberca se veia deli.
Property was OK.
Concierge staff was pleasant but inadequate. Screwed up our reservations on 3 different occasions. Worse, the manager questioned our honesty- had to check with the venue. Maddening and insulting. Long taxi rides and either the venue was closed or we were turned away. No compensation.
Hotel sin nombre was truly exceptional. The hotel is gorgeous, the room is very well designed, and the restaurant food and drinks were amazing. 10/10.
The room is on the first floor and it can be a little loud. We had a car alarm go off outside in the morning which was annoyint, but ultimately not a huge deal.
The base tone in the sound system is way too strong and out of balance. And very disturbing to my ears. I prefer a more evenly balanced sound.
Visiting Cantinita is an experience that goes far beyond just going out for a drink. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by a warm, relaxed atmosphere filled with great energy — the perfect spot to enjoy time with friends or a special night out.
The cocktail menu is truly one of its biggest highlights. The drinks crafted by Diego are simply outstanding. Each cocktail is perfectly balanced, beautifully presented, and full of flavor from the very first sip. You can clearly see the passion, creativity, and dedication he puts into every creation. He’s always happy to recommend something based on your preferences and consistently surprises guests with delicious and innovative combinations.
What truly makes Cantinita special, though, is the exceptional service. Jazmín stands out for her kindness, charisma, and professionalism. She is attentive, welcoming, and always greets guests with a genuine smile, making everyone feel comfortable and valued throughout their visit. Her friendly yet professional approach truly elevates the entire experience.
In short, Cantinita offers not only amazing cocktails but also outstanding service that keeps you coming back for more. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality drinks, a fantastic atmosphere, and top-tier hospitality. 🍸
Todo el hotel a excepción de la recámara que nos dieron. Habitación oscura y fea
La habitación
Our room was booked as a Junior Suit … it’s tiny, dark and no windows and with a shared dark tiny interior patio with another room…. So if I open a door in my bathroom it’s right out to where the neighbor can open his door from his bathroom. They must have used a very wide angle lens when photographing the room. It’s on the first floor so don’t get a room there. Actually so many nicer hotels in Oaxaca.
The front desk staff is sweet.
We hung our sign out for “please make our bed “ and we were gone from 9 am to 7 pm and the sign was still out there and the room was not cleaned. I also asked for a larger room they said they did not have it but looking online they for sure did .
Would recommend Cara Antoinette and la Grana .
Good location. Minimalist. Linen was If good ugali tu and fresh.
Room was Not very Clean. A lttle musty.
Room was very uncomfortable . You had to Go over a wooden platform tk get to the other side of the Bed into the bathroom. Not well maintained . Floor Lamp switch had no end pull. Room door was hard to manage and made of steel sheet. Handles could be of better quality.
Stairs to the upper deck too steel and dark.
A little pretentious.
Es un pequeño hotel precioso y acogedor. Bien situado. Precio calidad excelente.
Las habitaciones y los baños aunque muy bien decoradas y bonitas son pequeñas. Lo recomiendo para estancias cortas.
