The location of the hotel was only a 10-minute walk from the train station. It was located in a quiet residential area.
The local government has been working on beautifying the area and the hotel is located in a green belt walking path with no cars permitted to drive.
Maybe for people from abroad is not a big deal, but for us, Japanese, was: there was no TV in the room. It was specially disappointing because we were not able to watch the World Series Soccer match between Holland and Japan.
The hotel's location is its biggest draw card. The staff were all lovely. The record borrowing system is a bit fun and a novelty, it is also nice to have a record player in your room for the records you buy on your travels around Tokyo, even if the sound is poor quality. The vibe in the "lobby"/cafe on ground floor is fairly nice (although perhaps a bit overhyped in reviews I'm reading), with many visitors coming to enjoy the above average coffee being served. The room was minimal but provided everything I needed whilst travelling on a relative budget. Pyjamas provided was a nice touch. Being able to open the bedroom window on the second floor was also nice in summer. The bike hire system was really good and I was able to hire a good single speed bike for about 1500 yen for a day (around $1O USD) from the hotel and I would recommend this method of exploring Tokyo. Overall my stay was pretty reasonable value.
Whilst it is "clean", the hotel has signs of wear and tear, with some stains on the carpet and many scuffs on the walls and the rooms are very small and tight (Superior double B i stayed in) - okay for one person, potentially claustrophobic for 2. The stark hostel/dormitoryesque hallways and rooms did feel a bit brutalist - not in a good way. The included breakfast consists of a token you can exchange at Sidewalk Coffee Roasters in the lobby on ground floor for your choice of either a bagel with toppings + drink, or a small bowl of granola + drink. Whilst the bagels are pretty good, I would have appreciated a more asian breakfast option (it's hard to escape the obsession with American culture in Tokyo - like no... i don't want a Bagel in Tokyo every morning lol) and imo Eggs are such a vital breakfast item that were missing. The options appeared heavy in gluten and dairy and whilst i didn't ask, not sure if there were alternatives. Having said that, finding somewhere open for breakfast in Tokyo is challenging so it is still probably a good idea to pay for the breakfast! I was just disappointed at the options. Coffee pretty decent though.
I LOVED the location of this hotel - its a bit outside of the more touristy spots in Tokyo but its so lovely. There are so many shops and parks and the whole neighbourhood is so chill - tons of vintage stores too. I really liked the hotel - they were really helpful with any questions we had. You also get to choose records to take into your room to play (which i thought was super unique). You can rent bikes there and there is a coffee shop attached to the hotel if you wanna do work or hangout. I just really enjoyed the experience. Rooms are a bit small overall but it was clean and comfortable!
El barrio
Habitacion muy básica, personal con inglés muy justito. Excepto una chica, que debía ser inglesa...
Wow - det her sted er vores nye must-go-to-sleep-here.
The location was good.
I was next to the cleaning room so I heard a lot of noise during the day.
The coffeeshop in the entrance, the comfort of the room, free hot water
Location was awesome and would stay in the area again.
room was far smaller than it looked in the pictures. carpet etc was also not the cleanest and the fridge didnt function. Was also frustrating with the aircon adjusting every few hours automatically.
Shimokitazawa was a great location to stay while in Tokyo. Easy to get to Shinjuku and Shibuya via the train as well as all the other must see spots. Mustard Hotel is walking distance to the train station and the local shopping area which has an endless supply of amazing restaurants. The room was clean and comfortable and really all you need to store your suitcase and to sleep and shower. Loved the cafe and outdoor seating area for a morning coffee before heading off to explore.
Only complaint would be the quality of the pillows. They were really uncomfortable but I was so exhausted each night after being out all day that I was able to still sleep reasonably well.
Checking out
Dirty in general , old needs to be painted , hard beds. No tv in rooms, apparently you have to pay for an upgrade room to have a tv. Also if you need an extra blanket (only a thin blanket on bed) you have to pay for that too as an extra. Records are all scratched and skip every 5 seconds
Such a great location, amazing staff and the cafe is a savior for breakfast when shops open so late in Japan.
The lights outside our window (from the side walk) were really bright so we had to tape our curtain to the wall.
