Lovely hotel, great location, comfortable rooms, great facilities and lovely staff. Would recommend.
Pros:

The location is great, close to central London but away from the crowds. It’s such a unique quirky hotel, each room is themed to a different author. The rooms are spacious, they have a mini fridge and there are great facilities at the hotel - restaurant, gym and spa. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

Nothing

A Hidden Gem – The Limehouse Library Hotel - More Than a Hotel, It's an Experience and a legacy.
Pros:

I am slightly reluctant to write this review and share the news, as I'm afraid the Limehouse Library Hotel might not be available the next time I go to London. Open since 2022, the hotel deserves every one of its five stars.

What first attracted me was its unusual name, but what I discovered was one of the most fascinating hotels I have ever stayed in. This isn't simply a luxurious 75-room boutique hotel—it is a beautifully restored former public library dating back to 1901, and its history has been preserved with imagination and great respect.

The moment you step inside and pass the Wall of Portraits, you feel as though you've entered a world where books, history, art, and culture come together. Every corridor invites you to stop and look. The portraits, antiques, books, artwork, and carefully chosen objects create the atmosphere of a grand private library or museum rather than a hotel.

What many guests don't realise is that much of what they're seeing isn't simply an inherited museum collection. Many of the antiques, paintings, books, and decorative objects were personally collected over many years by Mr Önder Şahan, the founder of the hotel, and incorporated into its design.

I loved learning that the building once served the people of Limehouse as a public library for more than a century before being rescued from dereliction and transformed into this remarkable hotel. Instead of erasing its past, the owners have celebrated it. Each room is dedicated to an influential historical figure, making every stay feel unique and meaningful.

The Wall of Portraits features 75 people who have made an impact on the world through literature, philosophy, politics, science, the arts, and many other fields. Every room is themed around one of these illustrious figures. I'm Irish, and I was given the James Joyce room. How lucky was that! Outside the door was a plaque dedicated to James Joyce. Inside were a beautiful leather-bound copy of Ulysses, a copy of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and a biography of Joyce. As we entered our room, a video about James Joyce was playing on the television. What a wonderful welcome!

The staff were genuinely welcoming, professional, and clearly passionate about the hotel. Their pride in the building shines through and adds enormously to the experience. Mr Önder Şahan, the founder, is there every single day, especially at breakfast. What struck me most was not only his professionalism and genuine care for his guests but also the way he works alongside his team rather than maintaining the more traditional hotel hierarchy. He combines the entrepreneurial energy of Richard Branson with the cultural vision and philanthropy of Andrew Carnegie and is always happy to chat with visitors about the restoration of the hotel and its remarkable art collection.

We had breakfast there every morning and also enjoyed lunch there on three occasions. The service, quality of the food, and value for money were all excellent. One of the hotel's most delightful features is its leafy rooftop terrace. I met a group of ladies of a certain age who had booked afternoon tea there, and their eyes were sparkling with delight as they enjoyed the experience. The hotel also has a wonderful spa, complete with a traditional Turkish bath and sauna. As the weather was exceptionally warm during our stay, we didn't take advantage of it this time, but we certainly will on our next visit. You can also book a massage—another pleasure to discover on a future trip.

The location is also excellent. From Limehouse station, it's easy to reach central London, yet the hotel is tucked away in a quieter part of the East End with its own rich history and character. We walked from the hotel to Canary Wharf, where we visited the London Docklands Museum and enjoyed the excellent shopping. Afterwards, we had lunch overlooking the docks, watching the boats go by.

As both a reader and a writer, I found the whole concept of the Limehouse Library Hotel deeply inspiring. Too often, hotels are forgettable. The Limehouse Library Hotel is the exact opposite. It tells a story, sparks curiosity, and reminds us why preserving beautiful historic buildings matters.

Congratulations to Mr Önder Şahan and everyone whose vision, passion, and dedication brought this extraordinary place back to life. I left feeling that I hadn't simply stayed in a hotel—I had spent a few days inside a living chapter of London's history.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Bon séjour
Pros:

Afternoon Tea
Pros:

I went for afternoon tea with 15 friends to the roof top garden. It was a lovely experience but the service was not great. Just one server running around trying his best whilst on reception 6 staff members chatted away for hours serving no one. At £40 per person for afternoon tea with prosecco its not a bad deal but one server just cant deal with a large group. Management should think about their paying customers. It wasnt as if staff were dealing with lunch in main dining area as I counted 2 couples and one of them was having afternoon tea not a meal. Shame.

rude and arrogant receptionist
Pros:

the lady on reception when we attempted to check is was very rude and abrupt, as my secretary had made our booking and had missed putting our name on the booking.com booking she would not let us check in. She was very unhelpful and when we got my secretary on the phone and asked her to speak to her she was also abrupt with her and very dismissive. We were made to feel like 2nd class citizens in our own country and I would never stay at the Limehouse Library again.

Singled out at check-in, complaint dismissed without investigation
Pros:

My wife checked in with her siblings, who were helping carry her luggage (she had recently been diagnosed with occipital neuralgia so lifting luggage was particularly onerous). A member of staff repeatedly challenged her, objected to her siblings accompanying her, and escorted them upstairs, with no policy explained and no reason given. No assistance was offered. It left us with the clear impression she was singled out because of her ethnicity.

We were invited to email further details so the hotel could look into it. We sent a formal complaint. It was dismissed within hours by the marketing department with a generic, seemingly AI-generated response: no investigation, no findings, no questions asked.

We have stayed in luxury hotels around the world and never been treated like this. One star.

Disappointing
Pros:

Overall a disappointing experience.

On a positive note, the breakfast was good and the staff at breakfast were lovely. Very friendly and accommodating. No complaints there. The lobby and halls are really nice and quirky, and have lots of details that are fun and interesting. As well as this, the bathroom was good.

On the other hand, there were a long list of complaints about this stay. Non-functioning Aircon meant that we had to have the windows open, whilst our room was situated on the side of the train tracks, making for a disturbed night's sleep.

The bed was two single beds put together to make a very small and uncomfortable double bed. Which we didn't expect in a 4 star bedroom. There was no space to move down the side of the bed to get in from the side. The pictures were deceiving about the size.

Another issue was the WiFi. It disconnected ever time I closed my phone and when we connected to the TV it kept disconnecting.

When we checked in, we were expected to pay a deposit of £100 for our stay. I understand that this is policy for this hotel, but have never had to put any deposit down to stay in a hotel anywhere else before. Me and my partner both needed to provide photographic ID on checking in, which is also new to me in this country. As well as this, the card for paying the deposit has to be in the name of the person who booked it rather than someone in the party.

In regards to the deposit, they were very dismissive when I had questions about it. On leaving, I was informed that the deposit would be released the evening of checkout and that it had been held by my bank and would be returned within 3-5 days. After a few days this had not happened, so I contacted the bank. I was told that it was being held by the merchant (the hotel) until later this week. I then contacted the hotel about this and happened to receive the deposit soon after, as well as email confirmation that I was told I would receive on checkout.

Inconsistent staff on reception. They seemed happy to greet us, but every time I went back to ask a question after, they appeared not interested and as though I was an inconvenience.

For a 4 star hotel, I was incredibly disappointed. I would not return and wouldn't recommend this hotel overall.
