Great hotel, great food, excellent staff, just a long way from the airport / Stonetown
Pros:

we were upgraded to the newer Rio Palace Swahili - which is very similar to the Rio Jambo but without children. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a very nice balcony with a view of the sea. The buffet was amazing.

Cons:

It was hard to book any of the on site restaurants - even when you tried to book as soon as bookings were open. We did manage to get into a restaurant for 2 nights which was great. We also had a problem with our key which took 3 phone calls to rectify. It is also a long drive to Stonetown / Airport on some pretty horrible roads. If you want to see some of the shops and sights of Stonetown it is nearly 1 1/2 hours each way and about $35 USD in a taxi. Other transport options are not conveniently available.

I checked out on 17th July ( a day early) which I notified at check in but they still charged for 3 full nights and never mentioned I could have paid for a late check out instead, which would have been cheaper

Nice stay for a family!
Pros:

Nice resort with several pools and a kids club.
The restaurants are good overall and the ones on over-water are particularly enjoyable at sunset.
The staff is very friendly.

Cons:

Cleaning and towel refills weren’t done everyday, we had to request it.
It would have been appreciated to have one pool with shallow water for young kids.
The mattress could have been more comfortable.

Lovely beach hotel with good entertainment
Pros:

Lovely property on beautiful beach. Loved Jetty with two restaurants and sunset bar which was gorgeous to listen to music and watch sunset. Food and drinks pretty decent standard and entertainment good esp Friday Riu party night. What makes this hotel is the staff who work tirelessly and always with a smile on their face..all such a wonderful asset to the hotel. Great entertainment team, lovely bar staff/waitors..all so good but special mention to Teresa, angel,rosemary,Johnstone, Janet, Linda’s, hamad, Neema,Leah and Aisha and entertainment guys Assam and Mahir who ensure everyone having a great time.

Cons:

Balcony had no light and looked out to trees with no lights so pitch dark at night so never really used it. Lunch buffet was very repetitive

Cons:

We were unable to arrive on the first day of our fully prepaid stay because two of our children were hospitalized. We provided hospital documentation and explained the situation to the hotel.

Despite this genuine medical emergency, we received no refund or compensation for the unused first night. We found the lack of flexibility and understanding very disappointing.

The hotel itself was good, but how guests are treated in exceptional situations is also part of the overall experience.
