Not safe for girls and women.
During our recent stay, we experienced deeply concerning behavior of local gym members in the hotel gym that specifically targeted female travelers in our group, as well as other Western women.
The individuals involved were not hotel guests but local gym members from a specific community who appear to have access through the hotel’s gym membership program. These men behaved in an intimidating and inappropriate manner, speaking loudly, crowding very close to women, and openly discussing topics such as “how to get white women” while laughing among themselves. On multiple occasions, they were seen using their mobile phones to take photos of women in the gym.
One individual, in particular, displayed highly erratic and disturbing behavior. He made loud, crude noises, exhibited vulgar body language, and moved around the gym in an aggressive and unsettling way. His conduct was especially frightening for younger women. Unfortunately, these incidents were not isolated and occurred repeatedly.
We have stayed at this hotel in the past, often based on recommendations from the United States Embassy and the European Union, given its proximity to diplomatic offices and its reputation for hosting international guests. We have also had positive experiences at other properties operated by the Belluna Co., Ltd., particularly in Japan, and hold high regard for Mr.Kiyoshi Yasuno and his organization.
However, the situation at Granbell Colombo has deteriorated significantly. The hotel was previously well-managed under a Japanese management and maintained higher standards of safety. Currently, the presence of non-guest gym members engaging in harassment has created an unsafe environment, particularly for female travelers.
We spoke with other guests during breakfast, and several confirmed experiencing similar harassment from a group of 4–5 men who regularly frequent the gym.
We intend to formally raise this matter with Belluna Co., Ltd. in Japan, including contacting Mr.
