Amazing out of the way retreat. Wish I'd booked for longer. Peacocks in the grounds, forest all round, wow!
Had to travel to pub for the midweek stay but even that was no real issue as the bridge was fantastic food and v friendly.

Good location, we were staying just one night ahead of walking scaffell pike, so perfect spot. We stayed in one of the self catered cottages on the site, property was comfortable and well serviced.

The mattress unfortunately was a little uncomfortable, maybe we'll used but a let down when everything else brilliant
Adequate facilities, clean, and a very beautiful area.
- Geese, chickens, and a peacock drop their mess right in front of the front door. Two of us stepped in it at dusk.
- Really poor service: We had to reclaim our £150 deposit through Booking.com support. Irton Hall simply forgot it, ignored our inquiries, and never apologized.
- Breakfast ends at 09:30. Having paid for 6 people the night before, we arrived at 09:50 and were flatly refused service—with no refund offered.
They have a cat that has free run of the place and isn’t mentioned in their listing, and they wouldn’t let us cancel our booking when we found out about the cat inadvertently via their instagram. Ignored all requests.
The location and grounds were great. The cottage was very spacious and felt private. Shower hot, large and powerful enough. Parking was easy. Loved the peacocks and the cats! EV charger. Great base for Scarfell Pike.
It's very dog-friendly to the point they dont bother with the upkeep, but this didn't really affect our stay. The art in the bathroom is a strange choice and hung so unevenly that it's comical, and the staircase creaked like it could collapse, especially the first steps (examples of the lack of upkeep), but again this didn't really affect our stay.
However we probably wouldn't stay here again due to the staff.
The staff! When I arrived there was no one at reception so I rang the bell - no answer. Had to go looking for someone, found them chatting in the kitchen and looked at me like I was interupting them.... Host then came to reception, gave me the key and checkout instructions papers and then went to leave, even though I had a few questions. Continued to be obviously eager to get rid of me - could not be less welcoming.
We (3 people) were only staying 2 nights, and they'd given us one, part-used toilet roll. When we went to reception to asked for another roll, we were told that the cottages were self-catering. I also asked for 2 (yes just 2!) more teabags and was declined.... This was weird - why would you not swap 1 toilet roll (which we wouldn't even used all of) and 2 teabags for a good review?? Seemed so short-sighted - very strange.
Last few things was the smell in the hall / bathroom upstairs, we initially thought it was drains, but then thought it might be mold. The strength of the hinges on the dishwasher have gone. The bedroom curtains are very thin, with artificial light outside all night - something that's been mentioned in multiple reviews and they've still done nothing about. To add insult to injury, the kitchen and living area curtains are thick - why this way round!?
Super petit déjeuner, parc très calme, chambre spacieuse et confortable. Quelques éléments de mobilier un peu vieillots mais rien de majeur. Bon emplacement pour Skafell Pike.
