High standard hotel with warm friendly staff who made you feel perfectly ease.
The Commodore is spotlessly clean the food is first class and the location is quite honestly unbeatable.
Nothing that I can think of.
Everything apart from room size
Room size.Very small for price we paid
Fantastic privately owned family run hotel with great customer service

Well run comfortable hotel with interesting and attractive estuary view. Well appointed rooms with excellent staff and service.
Would benefit from a lift for guests with mobility issues.
Beautifully kept and in a wonderful location
There was no lift but that didn’t worry me
The view was amazing , the bed was so comfortable and the breakfast was cooked perfectly. The staff were impeccably dressed and very pleasant
The Commodore is a stunningly good hotel! The staff are amazing; nothing is too much trouble! The location is simply beautiful. If you select a room with a marine view, you will enjoy a constantly changing seascape over towards Appledore and beyond.
Facilities for the disabled and those with mobility needs are excellent, but you do need to choose your room carefully; there isn’t a lift to the 1st and 2nd floors of the hotel.
My wife and I found the food in the restaurant to be excellent. An extremely good breakfast was included in our room tariff and lunch and dinner were also available if required. Immediate access to the beautiful Tarka Trail was at the bottom of the hotel drive, so my wife and I were able to go out every day on our wheelchair bike and cycle for miles and miles on this magnificent trail! We were allowed to store our bike securely, undercover
in the main body of the hotel for which we were extremely grateful!
We will definitely be returning to the Commodore Hotel; we had a fabulous six nights…thank you so much!
Excellent Hotel the sea view room was super a pity we had to go home.
Great Hotei.Superb position and very friendly staff. Big plus for us is no dogs allowed in the hotel. Thoroughly recommended
The location is superb with amazing sunsets. The hotel is stylish and welcoming. Food is cooked to order and individual needs readily catered for. The help we received with getting luggage to the room (up stairs in a hotel without a lift) was much appreciated. All staff were well-trained and professional. The combination was a delightful experience and one we are looking forward to repeating.
Our particular room was quite small, offset by the wonderful estuary-facing view. Now we know the layout of the hotel, we will be sure to book one of the larger luxury rooms, also with a great view, on a future visit.
We enjoyed a great 3 night stay at the Commodore Hotel. In my opinion, the hotel occupies the best position on Instow Beach, allowing you to take in the fabulous views from either the terrace, the dining room, the lounge or any of the beach front rooms.
Our beach facing ensuite balcony rooms were well appointed, clean and tidy. We slept well, waking to the sound of the sea.
We opted for breakfast and dinner and thoroughly enjoyed all of our meals. The staff were very attentive, making sure that we had everything that we needed.
The Commodore is a charming, traditional family-run British seaside hotel. The location is absolutely wonderful right on the beach at Instow, the staff are attentive, the breakfast is delicious and all the staff go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. I was there on a work trip (lucky me!) but would definitely return for a holiday.
The most beautiful location on the River Torridge and a short distance from where it meets the River Tor. On the banks of Instow this precious hotel is a delightful place to relax and wind down from the stresses of modern day life. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed a wonderful Fish and triple cooked chip lunch with mushy garden peas and homemade Tartare sauce. Washed down with a local 0 alcohol cider from Sandfords whilst enjoying the amazing weather and watching the tide turn. The staff Olivia, Briony and Pascaline provided attentive service with a smile and friendly chat of the day. Super ladies doing an outstanding job and the chefs and all staff providing a super memory of our day. We won the voucher on The Voice local radio and it was so worth it! We highly recommend this amazing place you won't be disappointed!
We called in for cofees etc and our waitress , Olivia went out of her way to be super helpful. One of us wanted a milk shake..not on the menu but says Olivia i can make him one. Delicious he said. What an amazing service. She was polite and friendly. What an asset to a beautifully situated hotel
A hotel we will always want to return to. So relaxing, quiet, wonderful view of the estuary, especially at sunset, great food and service, absolutely faultless, we love it. Thank you to all the team, somewhere where nothing is too much trouble.
We were invited to join friends for supper who were staying at the hotel. We were local. The staff welcomed us into the bar when we arrived but didn't mention that the meal was Three courses for £45 per head. As we were visitors we had checked the menu for choices but there were no prices on the website. The food was good but I didn't want a starter or dessert and still no one mentioned the 3 course meal price. When we came to leave and I asked for the bill, the waiter was quite put out that we wanted ours bill separately and said it was most unusual and he would see what he could do. When he arrived the bill was £120, I had had 1 course and my husband 2 and still no explanation as to why so much. We had had a few drinks but not even a bottle of wine?
We paid the bill rather than cause embarrassment and I rang to query the bill when I got home and spoke to the waiter who had been rude to us.
To start with he was very rude and defensive and seemed to think we should know about the prices and there policy. Eventually he said he would discuss it with management and ring me first thing in the morning.
We were rung in the morning and given a £30 refund and no apology. This quite ruined the whole event for us and I certainly wouldn't recommend a local trying to have dinner here at all. Shocking given we all grew up together and I know the Woolaway family.
