The road noise was quite disturbing through the night, especially since it was very warm and we had to keep the windows open.
Ty Gwyn is a gorgeous historic hotel in a perfect location for hiking North Wales. The decor is eclectic and cozy, and the staff are helpful. The breakfast is excellent, and the restaurant has lovely food, locally sourced and nicely prepared. Be aware, however, that dinner service is extremely slow (seated at six, order at 6:15, food at 6:45, minimal service between) and you should plan for a couple of hours for a main and a dessert, as we had. Staff are very helpful but you may need to track them down sometimes.
The bar and snug are absolutely gorgeous spaces for spending a quiet evening, and make you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. The access to Betws-y-Cord is perfect—close without being in the middle of things.
Our room was tiny, dark, and cramped. The window was perhaps 14 inches square and opened into the floor of a deck used by staff. The room was so hot it t had to stay open but that meant no privacy at all. The bathroom down the hall was theoretically private, but generally just open because only lockable from the inside. Robes were provided—which is thoughtful, given the very public journey to and from the bathroom—but had clearly shrunk in the wash and no longer fit adults. We stopped trying to use them. The bathtub is deep but totally impossible for a shower without making a complete mess, as pictures will show.
There is a bar but if you’re staying on Monday or Tuesday it will close, and the whole lobby area with it, by 9-9:30, and then it’s back to the room. This would be fine except that our room barely fit a bed, and so afforded no sitting space at all. The bar has four cold taps, one of which was out for our whole stay.
I think our stay would have been lovely if we’d been in one of the rooms pictures on the website. As it was, we had to value location more than any of the amenities.

If you like ‘quaint’ places to stay then this is for you - it’s 16th century.
The bed was not comfortable, we were on the front of the property and because we are in the middle of a heatwave we had to have the windows open - it was like sleeping in the middle of the M5!! Traffic going past from early hours and very noisy. The evening meals here are lovely and a very extensive menu - but the breakfast was a bit strange and limited. If you didn’t want a cooked breakfast your choices were slim. As it’s a very old property it’s very undeveloped in places and anyone with mobility issues or older would def struggle.
We stayed in the apartment which was lovely & very comfortable.
