Lovely old hotel. Large room. The coffee machine was most welcome in the morning
Room smelled a bit damp. Would have liked a mini bar fridge in the room
The atmosphere, the history. The beautiful old furnishings, brass & wood all polished up and shining.

The beautiful building is in dire need of restoration.
Altough the rooms are comfortabe and clean, it needs TLC.
The chest of drawers in our room missed two drawer knobs. A few of the bathroom tiles were chipped. The shower did not drain properly.
This is a unique stay in a beautifully restored and kept 19th century property. We enjoyed the red double-decker bus tour and commentary of the historical buildings. The hotel table was excellent. We enjoyed exploring the hotel which houses many original pieces of furniture and artwork displayed in the lounges and entrance hall, and strolling their the gardens. The era museum and car museum are well worth a visit.
Historic value and chatacter
Very poorly maintained, many things broken and unusable. Eg Our bathroom had no shower, only a handheld hose over the bath and no hot water anyway. The rose on the handheld let out three tiny spikes of water. Completely useless.
Cet hôtel a le charme d'une d'un établissement historique du XIXème siècle, avec le confort du XXème. C'est très beau, très confortable et les repas y sont excellents.

Loved the environment and the food was fabulous

It’s redolent of the colonial times in which it was built. It’s picturesque and well maintained. The staff were lovely and it was great value for money… but…
We were awoken at around 04:00 by the Rovos Rail trans-Karoo train that parked up directly outside our room in the so-called “annexe” next door and ran its engine for the remainder of the night until it departed after 10:00! It was like staying in the middle of a construction site! We couldn’t get away from it, a deep unrelenting vibration running through our heads! Bearing in mind we’d been “upgraded” to the annexe on our arrival, and thinking we’d received some sort of privilege, it felt like some sort of sick joke! We complained to the manager, who uttered some excuse about Rovos having not informed him they were arriving and that they were supposed to turn off their diesel engines, he then said Rovos isn’t affiliated to the Lord Milner in any way so he couldn’t offer any kind of discount or refund for the distress and exhaustion we’d suffered. I’m still waiting for an update on the email he’d supposedly sent to the Rovos manager relating my complaint!
An institution! A piece of history and worth a quirky stop! Clean, great food, interesting location, fab with the kids!

Love the old world charm, comfortable bed and decent pillows. The grounds and town are stunning and worth stopping for.
The dinner was mediocre and not great value for the price. Breakfast was lovely. It was difficult to get the attention of staff at dinner and drinks chap was positively rude. The shame is that some of the same staff at breakfast were delightful.
We enjoyed every moment. Staff were friendly, tidy and appeared happy.
