Otterv Otterburn Castle
Pros:

Interesting historical building and location.
Convenient location for various attractions in the north east and scottish borders
Good breakfast.
Pleasant and helpful staff provided good service. Bar and lounges available for evening drinks.
Quiet location with pleasant grounds
away from traffic.

Cons:

A lift for those less fit would be useful.
Evening meals expensive and somewhat more up market menue that we wanted so ate at a nearby pup.
Some fixtures and fittings in bedrooms needed refurbishment but I understsnd new owners have investment plans for the hotel.

Lovely stay, but don’t have dinner there! The food is expensive and you don’t get much! Staff is lovely!
Pros:

Great location. Shabby chic, leaning more towards the shabby. But I guess that’s the charm of the place

Cons:

The property is in quite poor condition and lots of weeds growing, no garden maintenance

I'm glad we squeezed this stay into our 2 week trip through the UK.
Pros:

We loved the history and that we were staying in an actual castle!! The grounds surrounding the castle were beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Parking was plentiful and directly in front of the building. We relaxed in the study and played a board game after we walked into town for a wonderful dinner.
Breakfast was included which was nice and delicious.
Also - the towels (and washcloths - yay!) were absolutely the best: soft, thick, fluffy and clean!!

We would not return . It is a shame because it has great potential.
Pros:

Good location. Easy car park. Large bedroom with 4 poster bed.

Cons:

Bed room only serviced twice in 4 nights.
Evening meal was awful. Menu said “rack of lamb” which defined means a row of lamb ribs.
There was only one! And it was small and difficult to cut it was so hard. There was one carrot, potato and eight peas. The cost was £38!
Total cost for G&T, bottle red wine, 2 main courses and one sweet….£143!
Breakfasts very basic. No fruit or yoghurt. Full English breakfast with fried or poached eggs with yoke hard.

Historisches Gebäude mit nettem Personal
Pros:

Pros:

Location, character and staff keen to assist

Cons:

Minor blip in connection with pre booking food at [not formally connected] restaurant across the road. Offending staff member left. Owner sorted something out for our group in the end. Some evidence of new ownership teething but no real traumas.

Breakfast options required, not everyone wants a traditional full English
Pros:

The check in and welcome was very pleasant and the best part of our stay.

Cons:

There appeared to be an issue with the water pressure on the cold tap in the bathroom as it made a horrendous noise.

Larger pillows would have been preferred, but we slept reasonably well.

However the main disappointment was the breakfast. As seasoned travellers we know a good breakfast when we have one. For the price of the stay we were expecting a choice of juices, fruit salad, yoghurts, porridge and fruit, different options for the cooked breakfast like smoked salmon. Having also mentioned that there was a need for gluten free options, it was very disappointing that there was no gluten free bread available, when in an email it said that they catered for gluten free guests. The only option for breakfast was a traditional cooked breakfast. Neither of us eat bacon or sausage. So a tiny serving of beans, tomatoes and mushrooms and two fried eggs were received, and I'd also asked for poached eggs. Please have a word with Eshott Hall who will be able to advise on what a decent breakfast entails.
