The outside
The towels fhe bin
The hotel sits between a road and a canal and I have stayed on both sides. One side is functional, with a noisy road constantly present and the other is charming, the canal lifting the experience considerably.
There is a discount for single travelers in the restaurant which makes it quite appealing and the staff a friendly and helpful
The rooms are showing signs of age, the room that I stayed in on the road side was distinctly raggedy. Like many hotels the car park has been taken over by an outside contractor, this was not made clear on the website, despite the checkin staff believing that it had and despite having paid the additional £10 for my over night parking I still recieved a fine on the post. I scanned this and the hotel dealt with it and assured me that it was cancelled but it was irritating.
However if you book directly the parking fee can be waved
The location is close to the motorway and The Belfry golf club. The sitting area at the back of the hotel is very pleasant with a canal running past the patio. The food from the restaurant was freshly cooked and very nice and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The room was pretty basic and the hotel is alongside a busy road which the double glazing could not shut out. That said, it was very clean and pretty much as expected for the price.
Nothing
Staff was rude in check in kept putting in my card details wrong meaning I had to use my own personal card when it was a work trip, breakfast was a shambles, the bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on, the carpet was sticky, just generally a rubbish experience
Staff
The docor was so old and miserable, the carpets were no better, -dare not put barefeet on it. the bed was soft. The tv didnt work and wires hanging around it
Outstanding service
Staff were lovely and helpful. Breakfast was basic but ok. Location could be lovely IF you visit at the right time. Room seemed to be clean that is it but there are issues.
First up the room I booked via Booking.com was not what I was given, the room I booked was not a compact double as I took advantage of my Booking.com Genius discount to get a nicer room for less. This is something Booking.com needs to look into.
Yes they warn about loud music when events are on but not to the extent of what happens which is offensively loud and you could hear the "disco" THUNK THUNK THUNK through the whole hotel and outside was just offensive as there was a wedding reception going on. Due to the lack of air conditioning then all the windows and doors were are open so the noise travels and if you are in the bar/restaurant trying to have a meal you have mix of the music over the speakers and the THUNK THUNK THUNK mess from the wedding reception into a loud mess.
Yes I should have called them and asked if they had any events on and even then I might have made the mistake that, "oh it can't be that bad and won't be a problem"... But unless you were part of the wedding party there is no way you would have enjoyed the evening and I suspect most of them will have hearing loss. This also means you couldn't escape it outside as the event room opens onto the beer garden next to the canal so basically you are trapped there.
Due to having to have all the windows open due to the heat then you had to deal with the wildlife coming in so you could bake under the summer duvet or get eaten by the local wildlife.
So then 1am rocks around and the wedding guests return... think student accommodation on freshers week, lots of screaming laughing and running around between rooms. I should point out the soundproofing is crap and the floors creak and the doors have automatic closers that SLAM the door so hard it makes the doors on connected walls rattle. So that goes on until about 2am or so.
Nice location, food in the restaurant was reasonably priced,
Room was very basic but temperatures were so hot but no fan or A/C i got charged £10 per night for parking but nothing if booking direct with hotel this is a disgrace in my opinion certainly wouldn't go back cheap mattresses with car parking fees it well exceeded what it was worth .
Staff are very helpful, clean and tidy. Lovely view
I seemed to keep getting very cloudy or smudged glasses with my drink. Like they had been washed but when dried all smudgy cloudy, little dirty looking still.
Really good value
Liked everything
The staff were great, very helpful, polite and nothing was too much trouble. Special mention to the staff member who was there overnight. He was so helpful, cheerful, and such a lovely person. The room and bathroom were clean and had everything you needed for your stay. We stayed last year, and there have obviously been improvements made, and it seems to be ongoing. For the price you pay, it is now good value. Just don't expect it to be a 5* hotel for the price you pay.
The food that we had was good and very reasonably priced, although we weren't told when we booked in that if you don't book and prepay for your breakfast, it is more expensive than advertised.
We had a couple of niggles which the staff did try to sort out. Unfortunately the mattress on one of our beds was very damaged and they didn't have any to replace it, as all the single beds were being used. Luckily, there was a group of us staying in different rooms and there was a spare single bed in one of the rooms that we were able to swap it with. The staff did offer to move us into a double room but we had booked all twin/triple rooms as we all wanted separate beds.
The only other niggle was the food. All the food that we had was good, but the vegan/milk free food was very limited, even more so on Saturday when they took Pizza off the menu. It is not hard to make some of the things on your menu vegan/milk free, and a bit more choice would be good. If you don't have any allergies or a special diet there is plenty of choice.
Overall, we had a good stay and would stay again, we would probably find somewhere else to eat in the evening unless the menu had improved.
Staff were lovely, location was gorgeous and very reasonable price
The rooms were quite dated, the floor felt sticky and the bathroom could do with a refresh
Very inviting and the staff are lovely
Wasn’t anything I didn’t like
Very clean nice room and a good smart tv
The sound of the road was crazy and £10 to park your car is a bit naughty the room was cheap so wasn’t the end of the world but it’s sneaky
Everything
Nothing
Visited this pub as I Told it does 2for1 meals.
Not many people there and order fish and chips x 2. When it arrived the portion was small but the fish looked awful, I think it had been cooked earlier then refried, it had very dark batter almost to the point of burnt and about as much fish as a fish finger and the fish was grey. small portion of chips and warm peas.
When the waitress asked how the food was I told her the fish was awful, she looked shocked and said sorry and asked if we wanted anything else, I replied no, and we won’t come here again. Has to be the worst fish and chips I have ever had in a pub.
No management came to complaint and we left. No wonder pubs are closing serving rubbish like that.
