Location and the on site parking the Rooms were nice but a bit small / tight ok for a solo Travellers but not really for 2.
The staff and their off hand attitude plus,the restsurant service is pure hit and miss also.
I personally hate it when staff are so " Grand" and you know they couldn't afford £500 a night !
Example reception over charged the payment and hadn't a clue how to rectify it,had to get management and them I'm told I'll get the refund within 7 days!
Their mistake not mine and no apology.
Afternoon tea ... Simple check your tray before proceeding to the table .. This girl hadn't - Tea with no Cups & Spoons, said OH and left .... waited 6 mins for her to return with Cups but still no spoons....
They need to totally overhaul service its outdated and this attitude of I'm more important than you sucks of middle class England

The staff attitude and lets just say You serve Tea for 3 forget the cups and then bring them and no spoons ..... service is horrendous and so snobbish ......Not worth the Rates ... not for us again

We love The George! We always come to Stamford whenever we come to Europe. My husband is British and we visit friends here. Breakfasts, dinners and lounge/bar areas are clearly the gathering point for the town. You can feel and see it. It's the "place to be." We had just enjoyed a barge cruise in Champagne, learned about the necessity of chalk for growing champagne grapes and that southern England had begun to make and sell sparking wines. We sampled them at the Champagne Bar at The George and they're very pleasant. Everything about our stay was teriffic!
It's impossible to judge The George against a modern hotel because so much of its charm is that the building itself dates back to The Middle Ages. That said, would it be nice to have an elevator? Yes. Would some other 21st century additions be nice, yes. However, the warmth of the team from the front desk to the wait staff to the housekeeping staff and bartenders, plus the fact that we've been here so many times that they know us and greet us like "old friends" more than make up for not being "modern!"
No canned music! Excellent! All the staff were friendly and very helpful. This is an hotel which likes to say "Yes".The traditional ambiance makes it a delightful environment for guests. Long may it continue! Two of the three dinners in the Oak Room were exceptionally good and good value. Breakfasts were very good, but the breakfast room itself was brightly lit and the decor not to my taste.
The decor in the breakfast room. At the final dinner in the Oak Room, I suspect the waitress was not used to dealing with crepes Suzette. The flaming was minimal, which meant the sauce was far too alcoholic. Such a pity.

The rooms are worn, tired and in need of complete refresh.....It is obvious they have not been touched for many years, Not worth the charge per night!

Great location and a fabulous breakfast, plenty of staff around to help with anything (almost felt like too many staff causing their own chaos), bed was comfortable, robes/slippers in the room, nice shower amenities
Our room felt very small, dated & the furniture was rather odd. Power sockets on one side of the bed only. The hotel entrance smelt of a farm yard which was not pleasant. We arrived back late after a party & had to ring the bell twice to have staff let us in, the staff member didn’t greet us or acknowledge our pleasantries & instead just looked at us with contempt. Expensive hotel & the rooms itself just aren’t worth the price tag. Feels like they have the monopoly within the town so hopefully they’ll reinvest the money at some point.
