Stayed for the first time and really enjoyed our visit. We had dinner at the bar, which was lovely, and breakfast offered a reasonable selection, including hot food. The atmosphere in the breakfast area — which also serves dinner — was excellent.
Our bed was very comfortable and we slept well. The en‑suite had both a walk‑in shower and a bath, which was a nice touch. The abbey and tower are within easy reach and well worth a visit.
Staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We would happily stay again and highly recommend it.

This is a spectacular building, the grounds are spacious and well groomed.
There were 3 weddings during the weekend that we were there, which added noise and people to the hotel.
The food was distinctly average for such a high cost establishment.
Genuinely one of the best hotels in the UK. Staff were all excellent and a credit to the venue.
On the 27th of May, my fiancée and I arrived at the Abbey Hotel for a two‑night stay for a wedding, and the experience was disappointing from the moment we checked in. Despite booking seven months in advance, we were given a room that looked nothing like the photos online. On a hot day, we discovered there was no fridge, and to make matters worse, we had been placed in a full disabled‑access room without any prior notice. The room had emergency pull cords, a padded toilet backrest, and a shower chair — features we neither requested nor were informed about. It felt like we were simply given whatever room was left. The condition of the room was equally unacceptable. We had to clean surfaces ourselves because they were visibly dirty; the white cloth we used turned black. The blind was faded with large discoloured streaks, and the refrigerator that was eventually brought to us was filthy. The photos we took show exactly how it arrived completely dirty and unusable. The situation with the milk was even more concerning. When we asked about the lack of a fridge, the receptionist, Meg, told us the milk “didn’t need refrigerating.” I explained that to use the tea and coffee facilities, we would need to open the milk, which clearly does require refrigeration. The label even states “once opened, keep refrigerated,” yet she insisted it would be fine. Without a fridge, we were expected to leave opened dairy out in a warm room, which could easily cause sickness. After seeing a family member’s room which had the same described room as us actually matched the advertised photos and included a fridge as standard, we went back to reception. Only then were we offered a fridge, but not until the next morning, long after our milk had been sitting out all day. Instead of acknowledging the issue, we were questioned about why we hadn’t stated on our booking that we “required” a fridge, even though other rooms had one by default.
We stayed in The Thompson Junior suite
Just gorgeous
Very quiet
Nothing
The hotel was set on beautiful grounds and had lovely character.
The staff were all friendly and the bedroom and dining areas were clean.
No slippers were provided in the bedroom.
Breakfast was poor with a very small choice.
Location and parking.
An overpriced and over rated venue.
Weddings take priority and other guests ,like my wife and I, are treated as second class citizens.
The breakfast service on the Saturday was terrible and almost totally disorganised, due to prioriy being given to the wedding guests.
The bad news is that this venue is a very popular one for weddings.
Beautiful historical property. Loved all of the history behind hotel.
The shower door was just off the runner so needs to be looked at.
Beautiful historic building and impeccably maintained. Lovely rooms
Some modestly priced wines would be more inclusive for dinner.
Great place and location
We were there for our daughters wedding venue, terribly organised, charged extra for everything, charged £100 to put on fairy lights in marquee, wedding planner on holiday, really bad, would never recommend for a wedding venue, the worst experience when spending £18000
Not impressed at all, go somewhere else, staff dudnt have a clue, the day was saved by a the master of ceremonies which we booked independantly
Location was lovely and room was beautiful
Staff were untrained, uninterested and appeared to have no Supervisor or Manager to provide support. We were delivered Cocktails that were clearly not up to standard, the staff were inattentive and the overall experience was disappointing. We have stayed at other Handpickedhotels which were superb so this was a real disappointment
The building and gardens were great to stroll around. Dinner was very good.
Nothing
Lovely hotel but food awfull. Pte wedding party booked in and took priorety over hotrl guests. Food on restsurant poor half of menu not available food had to be returned over cooked and of poor standard xand appears chefs could not cope.would not recomend if staying avoid the restaurant not worth the money
Absolutely poor food in restaurant. Only interested in wedding guest.
The polite staff
The emptiness of the building in the evenings
Staff were excellent throughout particularly the waitress who served us our meals at breakfast. As restaurant was closed they kindly provided room service as we had dining table in Master suite
Few personal touches in Master suite - hand made biscuits or chocs not a wrapped Walkers finger. Turndown as all blinds hard to close
