A beautiful hotel and restaurant in a picturesque location. I took my friend for lunch for her birthday and we enjoyed delicious food in beautiful surroundings. The staff and management were extremely professional and gave us a very warm welcome and excellent service throughout. I can offer nothing but praise for the high quality food and service we received. We would highly recommend a visit to the Maynard to anyone and we would definitely return again.
The Maynard is beautiful property in a beautiful location and is the perfect lunch venue for a warm summer’s day. We were welcomed and shown into the restaurant, but we were unsure whether to choose a table or wait for one to be allocated. Having spoke to a second waitress, she confirmed that we could sit at the table of our choice.
The menu contains a wide range of nibbles, starters and mains and there is something there for every taste. The wine list was comprehensive and well priced, and our bottle of white was served at a perfect temperature. You will not go hungry, the portions are enormous. I had the duck which was well presented with a spring roll “on the side”. What was lacking was any carbohydrate, and a slightly smaller portion served alongside some new potatoes or rice would have been preferred. Nevertheless it was a lovely meal and unfortunately we did not have the appetite for desserts but did enjoy a good quality coffee.
I would give this restaurant 5 stars were it not for the painfully slow service. There appeared to be adequate staffing but there were huge gaps and the main course did not appear until some 75 minutes after being seated. I enjoy a meal not to be rushed, but this was too far at the opposite extreme. More visibility of staff so you can easily call someone would have helped the situation.
Booked for visit to Chatsworth House and a halfway stop on our journey further North. Great Value , friendly staff our room was lovely clean comfortable and great shower. The breakfast was top notch. Highly recommend
We stayed here for a wedding. I cannot rate the staff at this venue highly enough. From the courteous and friendly wedding team on the day but especially for those who helped us search for our missing car keys with kindness and patience till we located them. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the cooked to order breakfasts delicious.
Our 4th visit to the Maynard and as usual everything was great. A warm welcome with a reminder from Reception to enter the car registration into the display on the desk. The room was clean and nicely presented. Both our evening meal and breakfast were excellent. If you have a loyalty card ensure the waitress scans it at the end of your meal. I tried at checkout when paying the bill and was told it wasn't possible to add the points.
Hotel is fantastically located, and very close to Grindleford Railway Station providing good local service. The breakfast were excellent with plenty of choice, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Great find.
Would highly recommend.
Very hospitable staff and warm welcoming reception ; we even got a cheeky room upgrade - thanks !!
Close proximity to the Grindleford station, which was useful because we travelled by train.
We hiked one of the recommended routes around the Peak District - the Stanage edge epic ; we even made it to Robin Hood’s cave.
We were very happy to return to the Maynard for some good food and drinks out on the veranda in the summer sun.
Should definitely like to return.
We visited for my husbands birthday for lunch. We had a table outside with glorious views, being Longbow Loyalty members we received a lovely bottle of sparkling wine (birthday gift) and the food was great. I must give a shout out to the gentleman waiter who looked after us, his manner, professionalism and service was exceptional
The staff and service were friendly and efficient, location great and the food was exceptional.

We’ve been to the Maynard several times and the food has always been really good. This time we had lunch with our parents, the day before Father’s Day.
It was very busy as there was a wedding, and a birthday celebration in the restaurant.
We were seated in what felt like a corridor, with dozens of people walking past. Elderly parents are hard of hearing and it was difficult to hold a conversation.
My food was very good - chicken, which my parents had but shared as they cannot eat a full portion. This is an issue in many places, and I wish they did smaller portions.
My husband & his father had rump steak which unfortunately was very fatty & chewy. They did bring my husband some more but it was much the same. They did however remove the steak from the bill.
So a little disappointing on this occasion, and next time we go we’ll try a quieter week day.
Brilliant staff who were extremely supportive
Dogs as allergic
I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the staff I met during our stay you were so kind, polite and are a credit to the hotel. The staff iduring the check in went out of their way to accommodate my allergies and it was the kindest and most supportive any hotel has ever been, especially the lady who took me to our room.
This hotel is really beautiful, it’s quiet, well appointed and has everything you need. Thank you again for going above and beyond I am eternally thankful x
It was our first time at the Maynard on arrival I was very impressed it’s a beautiful building, stunning interior and in a great location.
*Take note do not forget to log your reg plate into the tablet we almost missed this and no staff member pointed it out. I note on the way out I did notice a sign in the car park but this could easily be missed and not something you would be looking for in a hotel/restaurant car park especially in the dark*
Our starters were taking a very long time and our drinks had still not arrived it was 30-45 mins in we had to ask where they were. A waiter then apologised and said the chef had sent some Olives we accepted this and it was a nice gesture we were fine about it at this point. The restaurant was not busy and there were empty tables around us so I was confused as to why it was taking so long.
Only this did not change the terribly slow service continued and this was not just on our table I could hear other people saying the same thing. The wrong bills were given, staff chatting for over 45 mins to people they knew. I appreciate it’s nice to get to know customers but be mindful of how long others have been waiting.
I found staff were deliberately avoiding eye contact at times and this made things even more frustrating. It was a long time for our plates to be taken away and then we asked for the desert menu which took ages and frustratingly two other tables were given their’s when we had also asked for one.
The food however was beautiful and we enjoyed everything that we had to eat huge credit to the chefs as at least we enjoyed our food, we ordered dessert at 10pm but it didn’t arrive until 10:40pm I was literally falling asleep at the table waiting which at this time I didn’t really fancy eating it. I do not understand why it took so long for 3 scoops of ice cream and a brownie their was hardly anyone left in the restaurant at the time.
All in all stunning location, venue and food but the staff absolutely shocking service even when they could tell people were getting fed up they didn’t come and apologise or explain what was going on it was quick eye contactl then avoid. On the way out we also saw a lady who also seemed to be waiting to express her dissatisfaction from what she was saying she had the same experience.
I would defo go to the Maynard again due to the food being good but I will not go back for a while to see if staying on site is any different.
What an absolutely lovely hotel. We were treated very well by friendly staff from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Nothing was any trouble. The room [Don Bradman Suite] was fabulous. Spacious yet cosy, comfortable beyond our expectation, clean, well equipped, with a gorgeous view. Food every night [we ate in the garden each evening] was delicious, and reasonably priced. And the breakfast was also excellent quality and excellent value. Beautiful walks from the doorstep and easy driving access to the rest of the Peak District. Nothing to fault! The room was not cheap, but we felt it was good value for what we got, and it was less expensive than other boutique hotels in the area.
