Gileemale Walawwa & Estate

We came expecting a nice old house and left feeling like we’d stayed inside a piece of Sri Lankan history. The walawwa is over 300 years old and every part of it — the 1911 façade, the jak and ebony woodwork, the open courtyards — has been preserved with real care rather than turned into a museum. It’s still warm, still lived-in. Ishantha, who runs the place and belongs to the sixth generation of the family that built it, has clearly put a lot of himself into keeping it that way.

The setting is the other half of the experience. Twenty-five acres of tea, cinnamon and greenery, birdsong from early morning, and the Adam’s Peak range in the background. Walking the estate was easily one of the highlights of the trip.

Ishantha and his team looked after us genuinely well. Nothing felt scripted. They took the time to share the history of the house and the village when we asked, and were quick and cheerful with anything we needed. The food was traditional Sri Lankan done properly. Rooms were clean, comfortable and full of character.

If you want a hotel, this isn’t it. If you want somewhere with a story, quiet, and honest hospitality, it’s hard to beat. Thank you Ishantha and the team.

The location and the vibes of the house

It was a pleasure to learn the history and traditions of this remote mansion built 300 years ago for the King's soldiers. The host, seventh generation of the owners, is so knowledgeable and inspiring. Super delicious food from local produce!! I loved the Ganesha in his garden. Gems have been found and I am so proud to now wear one.

It felt like going back in time and staying with a family running an estate with so many little industries on the land - cinnamon plantation, tea plantation, mining for gemstones, rubber plantation to name but a few. We had a wonderful guided tour of all the activities and met and watched the local staff working. Fascinating. The owner is 7th generation of the estate and many of the staff were several generations. The food was freshly cooked and delicious.

It is so beautiful villa full of history and the staff is the cutest persons! They showed us around, organised a SUPER good dinner and breakfast. It’s so peaceful place, totally worth the stop!

The staff and the host were very friendly and easy going. We appreciates to stay in a local, down-to-earth place, where we could learn a lot about the history of the place and engage with the local community. We chose the place as it offered tours to sapphire mines, and it met oyr expextations!

Ein außergewöhnlicher Aufenthalt, der uns in drei Tagen Sri Lanka, seine Natur, seine Kultur und seine Menschen näher gebracht hat als der ganze Rest der zweieinhalbwöchigen Reise. Wir hatten das ganze, geschichtsträchtige Haus zur Verfügung, das ohnehin nur vier Gästezimmer hat. Ishanta und seine Angestellten haben uns in einer bisher nicht gekannten Weise persönlich betreut, ohne je aufdringlich zuwerden. Ruhe und Individualität also absolut gesichert. Dazu ein großartiger Einblick in die sehr konsequent ausgerichtete nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung des Anwesens - Tee, Zimt, Kautschuk, ein bißchen Kaffee, traditionelles Schürfen von Edelsteinen (also ganz ohne Maschinen und Rodung). Das Essen wird vollständig vor Ort zubereitet, mit dem, was das Anwesen zu bieten hat. Das ganze eingebettet in die unverfälschte buddhistische Kultur des Hauses und des Dorfes. Herrlich auch das Kayaking auf dem Fluss hinter dem Haus und die Wanderung zu einem für andere Touristen nicht zugänglichen Wasserfall mit Baden und Sonnen. Gileemale Walawaa eignet sich zudem sehr gut als Ausgangspunkt für die Wanderung auf den Adam's Peak, den traditionellen heiligen Berg Sri Lankas. Die stärksten Eindrücke unserer Reise werden wir sicher aus diesen drei Tagen mitnehmen.
