A disappointing stay, particularly at breakfast
We had expected more from Dornoch Station. The staff were courteous enough, but we found the accommodation underwhelming and distinctly dated, rather than possessing the charm one might hope for in a traditional hotel.
Breakfast was, regrettably, the principal disappointment. The continental buffet was frankly unacceptable. There was just one variety of cold meat and two of cheese, both mass-produced and of deplorably poor quality. The issue was not merely the limited choice, but the thoroughly unappetising standard of what was provided. The full English breakfast, likewise served as a buffet, was also of mediocre quality and did little to redeem the experience. Neither option approached the standard one would reasonably expect from a hotel of this standing.
There was also something rather incongruous about the arrangements for accessing the buffet: guests had to pass staff who appeared to be standing guard over the entrance. Checking breakfast entitlement is perfectly reasonable, but the conspicuous supervision seemed somewhat at odds with the quality of what lay beyond. One could not help wishing that comparable attention had been devoted to the food itself...
We do not expect extravagance at breakfast, merely decent ingredients, thoughtfully chosen and properly presented. Nor is traditional décor, in itself, a drawback. Nevertheless, both the accommodation and, especially, the breakfast fell substantially short of the expectations the hotel’s positioning creates.

Wonderful Location, close to an amazing beach (5 min walk) - close to a great castle, Dornoch is really charming. We loved the Style of the hotel, really unique and very nicely decorated. Our room (King size) was spacious and the bathroom was new and clean (apart from some smell really amazing)
We didn’t get the room we booked (1 Double bed) but got 2 beds instead. They didn’t inform us. After we went back to the reception they converted the beds into a Double bed- which was good but took some time. The bathroom had a smell - even though it was new and clean (probably old pipes). We still enjoyed the bathroom as it was spacious and brandnew and clean. So Overall we would stay there again as the Overall experience was great!
The room was lovely facing the beach. Staff were excellent and the evening meal was good.
The buffet breakfast was cold.
Beautiful old building in a lovely seaside/golf course accessible location. Staff friendly. Ordered room service breakfast for my wife for both mornings of our stay, which was excellent although they may have run out of avocado on the second morning as it was barely there.
We booked a deluxe double room with a sea view, 210, which was a little cramped compared to our expectations. There were a couple of noticeable cobwebs on the ceiling/walls and bird excrement on the window sill. Found a first aid plaster in the bathroom.
Bed was comfy but pillows too soft. The hot buffet served in the dining room was of very average standard, similar to Premier Inn/Travelodge, and not what I would expect in a 5 star hotel. Breakfast was busy both mornings with plenty of staff present but a bit directionless at times with regards coming back to take your order and getting the tables cleared promptly. Noisy both nights with a bit of drunken shouting, swearing and banging of doors in the centre stair well. Sufficient for our requirements but over priced for what it is. Suspect enough one off golf trade suffices from a business point of view although I note others saying they will be back. Hopefully having been to Specsavers first?
I mentioned none of the above on our departure as by then there was no point in upsetting the reception staff or myself by remonstrating. Much better to leave an honest review. Please do not respond with platitudes as we won't be back.
Lovely hotel. Full of character. Great restaurant and bar. Amazing view from our room. Really helpful staff. A brilliant stop off on our NC500 trip. We will definitely stay again.

The Dining Room service.
Ordered Dinner and when it arrived my wife's had to go back to the kitchen to be cooked as ordered so I ate alone, as did she when her Dinner arrived. No apology from the miserable staff.
Next morning at Breakfast was a free for all with Coach Tours ramming the place !! Beautiful Hotel shame about hisw it is run !

We love this place! Celebrated our 25th of anniversary here and it was perfect. The room was lovely, the food was delicious and the saff were friendly.
