Staff. Room. Atmosphere
No air conditioning
Beautiful property and grounds.
The current pool facilities are quite run down and there were enough chairs and beds for the number of people there.
Seems a bit run down in places.
One person serving in the bar Saturday night (where they also had a wedding function) and 3 people on Sunday in the bar when I only saw a handful of other guests.
Food was a bit hit and miss.
Peaceful location very tranquil
Comfortable beds
The pool area was very small with not enough beds to relax on. Which was annoying as we were looking forward to spending some time at the spa relaxing which we couldn’t as no beds available.

The hotel itself was beautiful and the staff were lovely
Service was not great, especially during the breakfast service and the bar/terrace during the day. You really should not have to request things like a glass of water or sweeteners several times and still not receive the basic items required. There just were not enough staff available and those that were working, were either poorly trained or poorly managed. We also had a very poor meal in The Cloisters, it was by no means cheap and the food was of a very poor quality! On the 2nd day of our 3 day stay, our room was not serviced at all. However, the worse thing that happened was the hotel’s failure to collect us in their car as requested at 11pm on a Saturday night. We were left trying to get a taxi back to the hotel which was extremely difficult to do at that time of night and in the end, had to get an elderly relative to come and collect us and take us back to the hotel. Very poor
Beautiful rooms and fascilities
Nothing
Stunning location, fabulous staff, immaculately clean
Noise from building of new Spa, parking a struggle on busy first evening
Matfen Hall is a stunning property and has been so tastefully maintained and decorated. The grounds are wonderful, too. The staff were friendly and the rooms comfortable. We appreciated the welcome drink, our friendly greeting, our bags being carried up and the gesture of chocolates and a card laid out for my Mum’s birthday. The toiletries are lovely and the room was very clean.
Unfortunately, we found the service let down the experience. The staff were lovely but there seemed to either be a lack of training or a lack of provision of staff. We were not told any information about the hotel on arrival, nor was there information in the room. We did not know what time breakfast would be, what facilities were on offer and we had to wander around for a while to find the pool. Around the pool there was no staff, so we found empty water bottles left lying around and we once again had to go wandering around the premises to find towels. After an evening of exploring the grounds, we were unable to watch a film in our room. There is a Netflix button on the remote control, but Netflix did not launch. The only option on the TV was live TV. This did not feel in keeping with a 5 star, comfortable experience. Breakfast service also did not meet the expected service standards. I asked if there was herbal tea on offer and I was quickly told “no”. No toast was offered to our table, either. There were water glasses on the table, but no water offered. These are all small things that can easily be rectified with better training. Having worked for years in hospitality myself, I was quite shocked that the level of service was far below minimum expectations for a restaurant or pub, let alone Silver Service.
Lovely hotel with fabulous rooms, great bar and breakfast. Good evening meal but pricey
Spa but a new one is currently being built
Scenic, historic and stylish. Full of character.
