I recently stayed at Hotel Chinatown Inn, and overall it was a decent budget hotel with an excellent location. While it offers good value for money, there are several issues 1) Excellent location: The hotel is right in the heart of Petaling Street, within walking distance of Central Market, River of Life, Merdeka Square, numerous restaurants, convenience stores, and shops. It also has easy access to the LRT and other public transportation.
2) Surprisingly quiet: Despite being located in a busy tourist area, I could barely hear any noise from outside, making it easy to get a good night’s sleep.
3) Friendly staff: The staff were welcoming and even upgraded my room free of charge, which I greatly appreciated.
4) Comfortable room: The air conditioning worked well, the hot shower had strong water pressure, and there were plenty of power outlets for charging multiple devices.
5) Useful facilities: The elevator worked well (although it starts from the first floor, not the entrance), and there was a free drinking water refill station just outside my room.
6) Affordable: Considering its central location, the room rate was very reasonable, and the surrounding area felt safe.
1) Refundable deposit: The hotel requires a RM50 refundable deposit upon check-in, which some guests may not expect.
2) Difficult access: Because the hotel is located inside Petaling Street, you have to walk through the market every time you enter or leave. In the evening, the walkways become crowded and are often partially blocked by stalls, making it inconvenient, especially if you’re carrying heavy luggage.
3) No elevator at the entrance: Guests must carry their luggage up several flights of stairs before reaching the reception area. Staff generally did not offer assistance, which may be difficult for travellers with heavy bags, mobility issues, or back problems.
4) Smoke smell: Although my room was designated as non-smoking, it still smelled as if someone had previously smoked there.
5) Noise from rats: While outside noise was minimal, I frequently heard rats running and scratching above the ceiling. The noise was very noticeable and quickly became irritating.
6) Cleanliness: This was the biggest disappointment. I encountered several small cockroaches in the room during my stay, which raised concerns about the hotel’s hygiene standards.
7) Late check-in and no breakfast: Breakfast is not included in the room rate, and the official check-in time of 3:00 PM feels unnecessarily late compared with the more common 2:00 PM offered by many hotels.
8) No fresh linen: I stayed for 5 nights but during my stay, they didn't bother changing my linen and towels, which was unfortunate.
Chambre agréable et lit confortable ! Bonne température avec la climatisation.
L'isolation sonore, on entendait les bruits des autres chambres parfois.
Superb location, right in the heart of Chinatown, just a few minutes from 3 transport lines and bus connections
Great staff, special thanks to the very helpful and always smiling Karen
Didn't bother me but if you're a light sleeper it is a busy market with traders setting up in the morning so you might want earplugs
The decoration and design of the lobby and common places were good.
Self check in option is worse than anything. We had to wait 20 minutes outside, still could not connect with them over whatsapp/contact no. When somehow we got inside, we had to wait 1 hour inside for checking in since there was no employees there. We were provided with only one contact no which was not connecting over phone nor whatsapp. Then we somehow happened to find another contact no in their desk. Worst check in experiences.
There was a bad smell at every common places.
The shower of the first room we checked in was not working. Also the door knob was happened to be faulty
They changed our room in the next day and the door knob of the washroom was broken.
The location, the staff and the room size. A Special Thank you to Karan at reception for her courtesy, patience and professionalism
The steps up to reception otherwise all good
Location was good as everything is close by
Not recommended for families, especially if you have elderly people, as there are long stairs just to get started. The check-in experience was disappointing — no greeting at all, and the receptionist gave very judgemental and annoyed looks, as if I was bothering her just by standing at the desk to check in. I was also charged an extra 50 MYR for early check-in which I was happy to pay but a bit too much for the price of room for a night 80 MYR
As soon as we entered the room, the toilet flush was not working. We had to call the maintenance guy twice, and he ended up doing a temporary DIY fix using a plastic wire inside the flush tank. The TV in our room had a cracked screen, and in the second room there was no TV at all.
There was no hot water kettle in the room either. Instead, there was a common water dispenser on the floor, but that wasn’t working as well. The room was also not very clean.
The receptionist tried to be friendly while we were leaving and even asked me to leave a review, but honestly the rude attitude during check-in and the overall experience did not feel worth a positive review.
Todo perfecto
Great location, right in the centre of the vibrant Chinatown. We were welcomed by Karen who was really friendly and helpful and even upgraded our room as this is our first time staying with them. She kindly helped us extend our stay as well, keeping the same room. Great spot for somewhere so affordable.
There wasn’t a room clean everyday so you may need to ask if you’re low on toilet roll etc but not the worst thing as it is a very decent room (by UK standards very good) and very cheap.
