Staff insulted me in Hindi, property doesn't resemble photos, kept my money and called me a no-show

Cons:

Yes, the desk staff insulted me in Hindi. When I left as a result, they kept the money I’d paid at check-in, while telling Booking I was a no-show.

I had booked this hotel for one night because I had a connecting flight the next morning. When I got there, the room did not resemble the photos. Initially I thought I could deal with a dirty, shabby room because I was so tired. But then things went significantly downhill.

There were no towels, only an apparently unwashed bath mat lying on the floor from the previous guest. When I asked the desk to bring me a towel, the guy who’d checked me in came up and wandered around my room, looking to see if there was a towel or not.

As he did this, he muttered or stage whispered insults at me, calling me “mleccha” and so on. This was surreal and extremely uncomfortable. I assume he thought I didn’t understand Hindi, but it’s also possible he didn’t care. I didn’t say anything to him at this point, and when he handed me two towels, he offered them with performative solicitousness that felt just as passive aggressive.

It was impossible to stay in such circumstances. Because my phone wasn’t working, I walked around the neighborhood to find another hotel. I found several that were very much nicer for the same price (about 2800 rupees or USD30), and I took a good room elsewhere.

Then I went back to La Sapphire for my bags and to speak to the manager, who took my complaints with 0 seriousness. The guy who’d insulted me hovered in the background and grinned. No acknowledgment or apology from anyone. I asked if they would refund me, maybe half of it. Simply impossible, he said. I’d been checked in 3 or 4 hours already, he said.

Finally, they reported me as a “no show” to Booking, which prevented me from writing a review.

Thankfully, Booking reversed this when I explained what happened, but I’m still out of the money, as I paid cash.

I have serious questions about the 8.3 rating of this hotel.
