Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa

We were on the top floor and the lift was broken, no one offered to help us with our luggage on arrival, but a lovely member of the cleaning team helped us when we were leaving. A bedside light broken. We asked for poached eggs for breakfast, they arrived quite a while later and the white was very runny and inedible, especially given the recent salmonella scares. We booked the restaurant for a dinner. One of the specials looked like it ought to be vegetarian but did not have a symbol next to it, so we asked the waiter to be told it was not vegetarian because there was no symbol. When asked if he could tell us why it was not, he said it was because there was an egg in it (clearly stated), when we pointed out that meant it was not vegan, but it could still be vegetarian and could he ask the chef, he came back to say that V was for vegan and Ve was for vegetarian. Again we explained that was not so as he could see from the menu (cheese and egg dishes were labeled with the correct V not Ve), and anyway that did not answer the question just to be told that there wasn't any left anyway. Later, after we had ordered dessert, he came and told us there was a vegan menu but as I was not vegan he had not mentioned it before (I don't actually believe this as it was not mentioned on the menu or online, nor did I believe the special had run out or he had asked the chef). There were no vegan mains however. To cap it all off, the dessert menu listed nothing as vegetarian (though it is possible they all were) and only one as vegan. Even the sorbets were not listed as vegetarian or vegan.....though presumably they were as I ordered the one vegan dessert and it came with a sorbet. The menus need properly labeling. Vegetarianism is incredibly common and veganism increasingly so, and meat eaters happily eat veggie/vegan dishes occasionally! Sorry, but for a place that is selling itself as quality this was terrible service and insulting.

Not close to many amenities - nearest shop is 10 minutes drive away

(1) Swimming pool is v. shallow throughout.
(2) The resort has a range of accommodation, but everyone is expected to trek over to Blossoms Restaurant which is ok but lacks a high end dining facility, That said we had some v. good food although starter portion size was meagre.
(3) The hotel could do with an additional bar besides Blossoms which is cavernous and functional rather than intimate and comfortable.

Nit-picking but a better makeup mirror could be provided.

Breakfast - decoration poor- food just OK, but expected better

The main thing for the lower scores was the lack of air conditioning. We stayed 13th August - the hottest day of the year!!!! Plus the 14th….just marginally less intense heat. That aside we very much enjoyed our stay. We did realise about the lack of air conditioning prior to the stay, so we did ask for a fan, which we got and also bought another one with us. At the least the stifling air was moving about!!!

We expected better, disappointing.
The parking was far from adequate. Large car parks a fair distance from your room could be used or take your chances to find a parking bay closer. Most parking bays are numbered for the lodges and cannot be used. If your a ''hotel'' guest (I use the term loosely as this does NOT resemble a hotel), you are a second rate guest, taking your chances where to park close enough to carry your luggage.
As this site is on a hillside, steep paths had to be used to access your ''hotel room'' (more like a residential block). The lift was out of order for the two nights we were there in our block. The rooms did not have air conditioning, but we did have a fan in the room. The room itself, looked out onto a brick wall, with a walkway just below the window. We did not expect riverside views, but who wants to look at a brick wall? The room was far from quiet as noise from a another building could be heard (music thudding & people talking close by).
We were asked to book the restaurant in advance of our arrival, This did not make a difference as the staff were slow in responding to us. Once our food orders were taken the delivery of courses was ok. The presentation of the starters was extremely poor, a slice of toasted bread for welsh rarebit with some crab sprinkled across the top, slipping around a plate without a hint of garnish-poor. Our main courses were not great, over attentive staff, three to be precise asking if you needed anything. We did not eat in there a second evening. We can recommend The Twisted Trout pub ten minutes away in the car.
Our breakfast was included, it was possible to find something to eat. The very processed sliced bread for toasting and other elements of the breakfast made me feel as though I had booked a very poor holiday camp. Definitely below our expectations. We were disappointed and had high expectations. We will not be returning or recommending this venue.
