Hotel canceled our reservation without letting us know

The hotel canceled our reservation without telling us. We showed up for graduation weekend with 7 people having booked 3 rooms at an exorbitant price. We called two days before to confirm the reservation and were told everything was in order. When we arrived, the hotel had no reservation for us and no rooms available. They offered no recourse and suggested we call Booking.com. We spent over 2 hours trying to do that. Several agents tried to help, but their emails contained broken links or no information. The last email we received said they had made alternate bookings for us at another hotel. When we called the new hotel, they had no reservation under our name and no space for all 7 of us.

This was my first and most disappointing stop on my California road trip. I had already completed the online payment through Booking, but when I checked in at the front desk, they told me they hadn't received any payment from Booking. Under their strong insistence, I ended up paying again—meaning I paid twice the same amount. After returning to my room, I contacted Booking to report the issue. They agreed it was wrong and helped mediate the situation. I then received two separate emails: one from the hotel stating that since I had already checked in, they would not refund the overcharged amount; the other from Booking confirming that the hotel management had approved my refund request. Now that I'm already in San Francisco, I still don't know whether this hotel will actually refund my money. In a way, this reflects serious disorganization in the hotel's management—at the very least, their front desk computer system clearly fails to update data in real time, which is clear evidence of operational problems.
