Bitterly disappointing
Pros:

Location of the property is still beautiful.

Cons:

We stayed here 10 years ago. First off, we didn’t get the room we booked and were told it was our fault because we didn’t specify which suite we wanted. Ens of story. No apology, no we will fix it. The hot water was broken at the suite we got and they were working on it during our first day there. The vibe has completely changed. It used to be a funky, relaxed and beautiful place to stay. Now it’s all about the restaurant, which appears to be frequented by people not staying at the property. The prices are ridiculous for sub-par to bad food. It’s all about the turn and burn so they try and run you off before you’re even done eating. As a guest paying almost 600 a night I expect to be able to sit on a lounger in the evening and enjoy the beach without being harassed by the restaurant staff. They harass you to get moving even in the morning when there’s no one there. They quit serving the only redeeming thing in the menu which is their fresh fruit juices at 1230. Lastly, we are a hetero couple, but noticed that for a gay friendly place, there is an undertone of anger or distaste. We could never put our finger on it, but el Alquimista has completely changed in an awful way. We spent the majority of our time elsewhere and just slept on the property. There are far friendlier places with tasty local food and kind people on the beach.

We absolutely loved our stay, the secluded beach and the excellent restaurant gave us the perfect end to 2 weeks in Mexi
Pros:

Beautiful, tranquil location. Spaces are designed well, fit into the environment with exceptional details. Yoga class was a wonderful experience, excellent instructor in a calming space.

Cons:

The access road is a little tricky to navigate in the rainy season.

A Perfect Beachfront Paradise with Exceptional Service, Stunning Views, and Total Relaxation
Pros:

El Alquimista is one of those rare places that exceeds every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely immersed in the beauty and tranquility of Zipolite. The location is absolutely spectacular—right on the beach with breathtaking ocean views, incredible sunsets, and the soothing sound of the waves as a constant backdrop.

The rooms are beautifully designed, comfortable, and impeccably maintained. Waking up each morning to the Pacific Ocean just steps away felt like a dream. The entire property blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating an atmosphere that is both luxurious and wonderfully relaxed.

The restaurant deserves special praise. Every meal was exceptional, with fresh ingredients, delicious local flavors, and an unbeatable beachfront setting. Whether it was breakfast overlooking the sea or dinner under the stars, every dining experience felt special.

What truly sets El Alquimista apart is the sense of peace it creates. The yoga classes, spa treatments, and adults-only pool provide the perfect opportunity to unwind and reconnect. Despite its tranquil atmosphere, the hotel is also ideally located for exploring the charm of Zipolite and the surrounding Oaxacan coast.

Most importantly, the staff were outstanding—warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making every guest feel welcome. Their hospitality elevated an already incredible stay.

If you're looking for a place that combines natural beauty, comfort, exceptional food, and genuine relaxation, El Alquimista is an absolute gem. We left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning our return.

Cons:

Nothing, it was perfect!

Lives up to the hype
Pros:

First time at Alquimista and it was amazing. The room was pretty small but it had everything one needs including a hammock. It was just steps to the beach and the whole place is just so peaceful and quiet. It was the end of the season though and I imagine during the winter it will get a bit more lively. There's a restaurant that opens 7am to 11:30pm, the staff is amazing as well. I've been to Zipolite a few times before and it will now be very hard to stay anywhere else since nothing is going to match this place.

Cons:

Even though I love the restaurant setting, and the opening hours (7am coffee at an empty beach!) I am not a fan of the food. It is a bit of a random selection between Mexican and Pizza but none of it was amazing. At least not what I tried. It is also about double the price of many other places that at least in my opinion serve better food.
