We stay in York quite often and fancied a change from the chain hotels we usually use.
Hotel Clementine is part of a small local group of businesses, but feels very much like an independent guesthouse with all the advantages and quirks that entails. We booked a standard room, which was absolutely fine for us as a couple (we actually like each other, which helps). The hotel has a funky, tongue-in-cheek, Georgian post-modern decor throughout, which is fun - and a bit (unintentionally?) Goth!
The rooms were absolutely spotless and serviced every day - and there was a nice bit of garden around the back, which was welcome during the continuing heatwave.
Breakfast was a bit variable for us.
We had some very nice days during our stay, and my meat-eating partner enjoyed the full breakfasts. Poached eggs came out perfect on the days I ordered them.
However, one day I ordered scrambled eggs, which didn't seem freshly prepared. In fact, they were more like mashed boiled/poached eggs. I mixed them with a bit of butter, and all was well.
Our only real upset was over coffee.
Because there was no coffee-maker in the room rate we chose, we really needed that first jolt of caffeine. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a policy of coffee rationing that became a daily battle of wills.
Day one, we received two cups, one each, in a single pot. A cup holds about 150ml of liquid - 200ml tops. A mug is 330ml - so that's about what they gave us. A mug of coffee to *share*.
We tried to circumvent this shadow regulation on day two by asking for two pots of coffee. We got some side-eye, and the pots that arrived had one cup of coffee in them *each*. On the following morning, we asked for additional coffee after we'd finished our ration, and our request was happily accepted. Plot twist: the coffee didn't arrive.
Day four, an unsuspecting French couple arrived. When asked for their drink preference, the lady asked for "a double espresso". Oh, sweet summer child, I thought, as a veteran of the great York coffee drought of 2026. However, I must attest that upon that day, we asked for and did receive additional coffee. Hurrah!
Would I recommend the Hotel Clementine? Yes, yes. But bring coffee bags.
Everything about the hotel was lovely 😍
This is by far one of the nicest hotel ive stayed in a long time. Super friendly staff the hotel was lovely and clean.

The reception staff were helpful.
They also gave suggestions on where to have dinner.
Breakfast was very nice & the location was great.
The room was tiny for 2 adults, 2 suitcases & a dog!
The breakfast waitress brought our cooked breakfast straight after giving us our cereal. We asked her to bring it back later -when she did it was cold! Perhaps some training around this might be useful?
Staff were excellent and the room was beautiful
Unfortunately we arrived in the middle of an unprecedented heatwave, and the two fans provided In the room were not sufficient for being on the top floor of a building with little ventilation. The staff accommodated is as best as they could however, providing us with buckets of ice on request.
everything was clean and tidy staff were fantastic would defo go back
not that i didn't like but tge air con unit was awful to then be told a front desk yes its broken and needs a part ,
Comfortable bed. Nice toiletries
Our room was the smallest I've ever seen. It's not fair to call it a room for two people. We could barely squeeze into it.
Lovely atmospher. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Rooms and ensuites lovely
Very quiet and seating areas and garden very attractive
Excellent breakfast
ill definitely stay again
Everything was amazing
Enjoyed the sitting room which allowed us to have drinks and visit with others we were traveling with.
Nice that pets were allowed.
Being on the top floor was very difficult. Being in our late 60’s and hauling luggage up many flights of stairs was difficult. Also no A/C when York was experiencing record high temperature was quite uncomfortable.
Wonderful and quirky place to stay. I came for the night for my graduation and it was a lovely end to a great three years in the gorgeous city of York. If I come back in future for a trip down memory lane I would definitely stay again. The night porter was absolutely brilliant, showing us up to our room late at night after my parents had checked us in - above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable! also very much appreciate the Yorkshire tea bags - no PG tips in sight yippee! I would recommend to anyone visiting, it perfectly sums up the feel and hospitality of York as a city.
We had two different types of biscuits which meant me and my boyfriend fought over the Viennese whirls - to avoid a domestic dispute in future perhaps two packets of the same biscuits… (Of course I am joking, I have no bad notes!)
The hotel has very quirky decor. The attention to detail in the room was exceptional. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing being too much trouble. A good location, a short into the city. We highly recommend the hotel.
The breakfast was the only letdown. The quality didn't match the price. A bit more variety on the buffet would have been nice.
Absolutely perfect stay. Desk attendant Cam welcomed us with a bottle of cool water on a warm day after slogging our suitcases from the train station, and went above and beyond to get us checked in early, which was much appreciated after our long journey from Boston. We stayed in the squeaky clean Rowntree Suite and enjoyed the comfortable linens, luxurious shower, and delightful terrace. Decor around the property was quirky and charming, as was the garden. We appreciated being on a quiet residential street away from the noise, but a pleasant leafy walk from all of the main York attractions. Exceptional value for summer. We only wish we could've stayed longer!
Creaky floorboards in Rowntree Suite could use some TLC, but this is nit-picking.
