The location is magnificent, pretty much close to everything.
A very grand old hotel in days gone by but we got quite a small room. Really its just rooms now. No bar, wonky toilets, no pool, nothing but rooms up a grand staircase. The location was perfect for the city centre and it was very cheaply priced so no complaints
20 foot ceilings, packed with old world charm but with all the modern conveniences ... 4 balconies in one room!!
This hotel is on a beautiful square right in the centre of Mérida, and has all the faded grandeur and charm that makes the city so special. The room had a high ceiling and comfortable beds.
There was no attempt to provide a warm welcome in this hotel, and it doesn´t really offer any facilities other than the room and a sense of history.
Return visit to somewhere I stayed in 1980; the same incredible carved wooden door frames for each room and the pillared interior courtyard still in place. Then it had last been redecorated in 1948; now it was last refurbished in 1987 I think. Great vintage atmosphere and high ceilings; view over the Parque Hidalgo from the balcony; helpful staff.
No catering or coffee except the Starbucks and Santa Clara ice cream shops on the ground floor. Bathroom was small but adequate (we had one of the smaller good value rooms).
Hotel is in downtown Merida, great location
El Gran Hotel is the grand old dame in the historic center of Merida, opening onto a lively, shaded square of vendors and music, and easy walking distance to markets, restaurants (including a Starbucks right outside the door) and the stunning cathedrals just across the square. The hotel was built in approx. 1900 and retains all of its original beauty and charm, from high ceilings with intricate trim and cornice moldings to tile floors and marble stairs to antique furnishings and fixtures, doors, balconies, etc. It truly feels as if you were walking into a movie set and I had to pinch myself a few times that this was real. There seemed to be few other guests and was quiet inside, compared to the busy bustle in the streets. Our rooms were on the 3rd floor (by US definition) and involved walking up many stairs. One room included a beautiful seating area and multiple small balconies, the other had a small seating/changing area with enormous doors to help limit street noise, and with its own balcony as well. Rooms have AC, beds are full size not queen.
The grand old dame is showing her age. There are large cracks, crumbling and broken pieces in ceilings, crown moldings, and floor tiles. The hotel is built around a central courtyard, each floor of rooms with large and lovely seating areas around it. Because the courtyard is open to the sky and the heat in the Yucatan is extreme, the common areas can feel excessively warm. Also, the nightly noise of street music can be troubling to some, so request a quiet room if you are a light sleeper. However, for our group these things were very minor compared to the astonishing and classic beauty, the kind and helpful staff, and the perfect location. If you are not a fan of history, antiques, and aging glory from another era, and prefer comfortable chain hotels, which I find bland and lacking in character, then this is not the hotel for you. We would gladly return and wish El Gran another 100 years of fabulous history.
The hotel Is beautiful with it's old colonial style, it is like going back in time. Staff is always willing to help and nice. Location is great
The shower is not having good water pressure and I reckon need to be updated a bit
Great location - just a block from the main square. Friendly staff. Amazing architecture.
While the building was beautiful - one of the oldest in Merida - the decor was a bit tired. No elevators (though the bell hop was happy to carry up your bags) so expect to do a lot of stairs. Room amenities - there was an iron and a fridge but no hair dryer. Took forever to get hot water in the sink and the shower.
Buena ubicacion, y servicio
