My husband and I recently spent six nights at the Romantik Seehotel Sonne in Küsnacht. It was our second stay; the first having been in October of 2025. My husband studies at the C.G. Jung Institute, which is within walking distance of the hotel. We were at this hotel again so he could attend classes in person.

It was interesting to return to the Sonne Hotel last month, as it's changed a bit since our first visit. When we visited the hotel last fall, the restaurant and biergarten were closed because they were being renovated. We had breakfast and one dinner in the Stübli. During our visit last month, the Stübli was closed for renovation, and the restaurant and biergarten were newly opened.

I was very impressed with the Pavilion restaurant, which offers both excellent cuisine and an inviting ambiance. Service is friendly and professional, and my husband and I both enjoyed the breakfasts, one lunch and one dinner we had there. The breakfasts were especially impressive, with a huge array of items offered at the table, rather than at a buffet. My husband and I both loved the egg dishes. My favorite was the Egg Royal; his was the Arme Ritter.

The biergarten is also a real treat, especially at this time of year. There's plenty of seating near the lake, good food options, and flowing drinks. I also liked the guitar player who came every evening and played for the crowds. Be sure to bring some tip money for him!

We stayed in a junior suite room, as we did during our first visit. This time, we were in room 410, which is a very large and unique room that offers views of the lake. The first time we visited the Sonne Hotel, we stayed in room 310, which has larger windows, but isn't quite as unique as room 410 is. The ceiling features exposed beams that show the interesting architecture of the building.

The bathroom opens into the room, although there are cubicles for the shower and toilet. This arrangement doesn't bother me, but could be a problem for anyone who expects total privacy in the bathroom.

The hotel is not air conditioned, so although there are lake breezes, and a fan is provided, room 410 does get very warm in summer. Also, to get into the room the door, one has to climb up and down a short flight of steps. This might be very challenging for anyone with mobility problems. Housekeeping did a great job, and got the room cleaned on a timely basis. I really appreciated that, since I was mostly hanging around the hotel all day.

I really enjoyed the lakeside sunbathing and swimming area. I spent my afternoons there, enjoying the refreshing lake and watching people enjoy all it has to offer. The area has shady trees and offers a first rate view of the ferry stop. However, there were a lot of private events going on during the week I visited, so about half of the area was cordoned off. Also, umbrellas were in somewhat short supply, and no one attends the area. So, there were a few times when people left their personal belongings on loungers under the trees and disappeared. As a fair skinned person who wants to avoid sunburn, that was a little disappointing. It would have been nice to have a towel service, as well, although I brought my own beach towels because I figured they would not be provided.

The hotel is very close to the train station, which makes it easy to avoid bringing a vehicle. We brought a car on our first visit, but this time, we took the train. Other than some concern about the heat affecting the train schedules, using the train was very convenient and easy. There is a hill on the way to and from the hotel, so again, something to think about for anyone who might have mobility issues.

Overall, we enjoyed our second stay at the Romantik Seehotel Sonne. I'm sure we'll have opportunities to visit again, as my husband continues his studies. It will be a pleasure to return!

Lage am See

Sonne exceeded our expectations. The rooms are well-appointed, quiet, and spotlessly clean—a true retreat. The dining experience was equally impressive: fantastic food paired with impeccable service. We especially loved the lakeside garden and the newly renovated Pavilion restaurant. Do not miss the lemon sorbet—it was absolutely divine!

My top recommendation：set aside a full day just to soak it all in—swim in the lake, lounge by the water, and do nothing but relax. It's pure therapy.

Location is fabulous. The cafe/self service in front of the main restaurant is very pleasant
