What a delightful establishment! Lovely staff, colourful decor, comfy bed, scrumptious food
Pros:

The warm, helpful staff were a highlight of our two-night stay at this delightful establishment. Comfy bed, cosy room, scrumptious meals added to a great stay

Cons:

The floorboards were very creaky, so you would wake up your partner if you needed to go to the bathroom in the middle if the night

A Masterclass in Karoo Hospitality!
Pros:

🌟 An Unforgettable Weekend Oasis: A Masterclass in Karoo Hospitality!
If you are looking for the ultimate weekend escape where art, soul, incredible food, and genuine warmth collide, look no further than the Karoo Art Hotel. From the moment we checked into the Potters Cottage on Friday afternoon until our reluctant departure on Monday midday, every single moment felt like magic.
Here is why this slice of Barrydale heaven has officially won our hearts (and why we are already planning our return trip!):
🏡 The Accommodation & Pet-Friendly Warmth
The Potters Cottage is an absolute dream—beautifully appointed, cozy, and full of character. But what truly sets the Karoo Art Hotel apart is their genuine hospitality. Our chocolate Labrador, Shadow, wasn't just tolerated; he was welcomed with open arms. Finding a world-class hotel that treats your four-legged family member like royalty is a rare gem.
🍽️ A Culinary Journey to Remember
The food here deserves its own standing ovation.
Friday Night: We kicked off the weekend with pre-dinner drinks on the balcony, watching a breathtaking Karoo sunset paint the sky. Dinner in the dining room followed, featuring a legendary Karoo Lamb and a fillet steak cooked to absolute perfection. We topped it off with a sublime dessert of chocolate gateau and vanilla ice cream that I’m still dreaming about.
Saturday Night: The kitchen flexed its versatility by serving up a sensational pasta dish that was pure comfort on a plate.
Sunday Treat: A delightful daytime visit to Jacques’ Bakery for some local artisanal goodness.
🌲 Exploration & Adventure
The hotel serves as the perfect launchpad for exploring the rich offerings of the area:
The Healing Waters: On Saturday, we headed to Warmwaterberg to soak in the mineral-enriched hot waters—pure bliss.
Local Treasures: Saturday afternoon was spent browsing the vibrant Moreson Market and popping into The Langhuis, which offers a stunning collection of antiquities.
Magical Mornings: Both Sunday and Monday mornings were defined by early AM swims in the hidden waterfalls of the Tradouw Pass. Swimming in those natural, mineral-enriched waters surrounded by towering cliffs was an unforgettable experience.

The Verdict: It was incredibly sad to drive out of town on Monday. The Karoo Art Hotel doesn’t just offer a bed for the night; they offer an experience that rejuvenates the soul. Thank you for a spectacular weekend—Shadow, my partner, and I cannot wait for the return trip!!

Barrydale Magic
Pros:

What an amazing stay we had at the Barrydale Karoo Art Hotel

Our hosts were absolutely amazing, Wayne and his team really looked after us allowing us to have a really memorable stay, and the food was excellent

We would most definitely recommend anyone wanting to stay in Barrydale that they stay over at the Karoo Aert Hotel - its central and an easy walk anywhere from there with lots of interesting places to visit

A real treat at this Grand Old Hotel
Pros:

This most charming hotel in the lovely village of Barrydale is a wonderful experience in every way. From the warm reception by friendly staff, to the reception room filled with a vast array of eclectic artworks. To the first class comfort of your room, each one differently decorated with authentic fine furniture and quirky details. The bar and dining areas have such atmosphere and warmth, with really good food and drinks. The inner courtyard and pool area is peaceful and sunny, worth spending time in. In fact all areas are so worth spending time in SLOWLY. The village is also worth spending a few days in, slowly! You will leave feeling refreshed and filled with the delights of a slower country lifestyle.

A Warm Artistic Escape in Barrydale
Pros:

I visited the Karoo Art Hotel in Van Riebeeck Street Barrydale from 8 to 10 May 2026 while attending a writing course hosted at the hotel’s conference centre. Dating back to the 1930s, the hotel has a warm, friendly old-world charm that immediately makes one feel at home.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff, while the fireplace in the reception area created an inviting and cosy atmosphere. Throughout the hotel, beautiful artworks are displayed everywhere, and at times one almost feels as though one is walking through an art gallery rather than a hotel.

During our stay, live Blues music was performed in the bar on the Friday evening, adding greatly to the unique atmosphere and character of the hotel. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our visit, the rooms were very clean, spacious and interestingly decorated, and the food was truly outstanding.

In my opinion, the Karoo Art Hotel offers excellent value for money and is most certainly well worth a visit.

Our wet stay in the Karoo Art Hotel!
Pros:

Our stay in the Karoo Art Hotel was interesting in that a storm came through and we were totally rained in for a full day with our friends and our golden retriever puppy. The staff looked after us so well, kept the fire alight, served us good coffee, scones, wine, beer and delicious pizzas. We couldn't have asked for more. Barrydale was without power for hours, everything was closed, but the hotel offered a homely atmosphere. Thank you to everyone involved.
