Location was fantastic! The atmosphere was fantastic as well. The rooms were beautiful. Value was good. It was VERY clean. No noise while we were there just the beautiful sound of nature. The staff was top notch and very sweet. Amenities were perfect. Games, sand toys for kids to play with beach chairs, umbrella, towels, water sport activities: snorkel, paddle board, boogie board with very cool window for kids to see fish without putting head under AND kayaks! This place is NOT big and give a boutique, cozy feel. Really nicely decorated throughout the hotel. Everything is so easy to find and you are not wandering around the first few days trying to figure out where you are as in LARGE hotels. I LOVED the vibe here. Perfect.
We really enjoyed our stay at Sugar Bay. Great and amazing hotel. The whole staff and management are so nice, professional and accommodating.
They made our stay wonderful and relaxing.
It’s in a great location right on Hastings.
The pool and beach area is chill and relaxing.
The bartenders at both beach bars and Pool bar made the best drinks!!
The buffets at the Reef restaurant were amazing, with lots of menu options. Also loved the lunch menus at the beach restaurant.
The whole facility and rooms are always clean. Staff, Food, drinks, beach and pool are spot on.
I stayed at Sugar Bay in June 2026 as soon as arrived at hotel the staff were all friendly and welcoming! There were some staff members who were exceptional, Aaron who works in watersports on the hotel beach, Jesus, Akil, Deangelo, Tristan and damien who work at bar/restaurants! They all provided exceptional service and made our hotel experience amazing! Aaron’s customer service was beyond exceptional, he should be promoted! The food at Colins beach bar and grill was amazing they served high quality authentic bajan food! Also the asian fusion restaurant UMI also offers delicious high quality food! The hotel has a wide range of facilities. I would highly recommend the hotel!
We stayed at Sugar Bay from 14 to 23 June as a family of 4 with adult children. All of us were impressed by the warm welcome, the standard of our two Signature twin rooms, the food, drinks, beach and staff. The surrounding gardens are stunning and well tended. Our rooms were on the first floor (in UK we mean one above ground) and our balconies had a view into a tropical ‘jungle’ in which we spied green monkeys, hummingbirds and a glimpse of a whistling frog. We had emailed ahead and requested non ground floor rooms, separate twin beds and a quiet location, all of which were met.
The all inclusive drinks were high quality and the cocktails freshly mixed and strong! There is a good mocktail menu too for non-drinkers. The food was excellent in the buffet and also at Colin’s, Sizzle and Umi. The filet mignon at Sizzle was the best steak I’ve ever tasted. In fact we visited Sizzle twice and on both occasions were served by Tyreke who was professional and great at his job.
We ate lunch most days at Colin’s beach bar-this is casual enough that you can roll up in swimwear yet the table service received makes it feel like an occasion. There is a slightly varied menu each day with a special dish of the day. Every lunch we had there was delicious and Samantha coordinates the team efficiently to ensure a smooth service. Another memorable team member was Jesus who has a quiet and gentle nature, with great attention to detail.
We spent a lot of time at the beach which is spacious with plenty of sun loungers for everyone. The watersports guys are friendly and helpful in setting up parasols or moving sunbeds. A special shout out to Kyle who is infectiously funny and cheerful!
We only visited the pool once but, as other guests have mentioned, the sun loungers get reserved early (with nobody on them) so it’s difficult to get a spot.
We had fun in the games room where you can play pool, table football and arcade games in air conditioning. We used the gym too which was fine for our needs. The Lazy Mongoose is a nice idea and we visited on a couple of evenings to play darts and enjoy a drink in a traditional pub.
Overall, we would thoroughly recommend Sugar Bay for a memorable and relaxed holiday. The thoughtful details combined with good quality food and drink, plus a dedicated team of staff makes this place a perfect choice.
Two couples came here to celebrate our 40th birthdays, and we honestly couldn’t have picked a better place.
We had a fantastic holiday from start to finish. This isn’t a flashy, ultra-luxury resort, but that’s part of its charm. It feels authentic, relaxed and genuinely welcoming, while still offering a high standard throughout.
The food deserves a special mention. The buffet was quite simply the best all-inclusive buffet we’ve ever experienced, with plenty of choice and consistently excellent quality. Both à la carte restaurants were also superb, particularly Sizzle, which we visited twice during our stay.
The staff were wonderful. Akeel on the beach and Seth at the bar were always friendly, attentive and a real credit to the hotel. The reception team were also great and helped us arrange taxis and excursions without any fuss.
We stayed in a basic Signature Room, which was more than adequate for our needs. It was comfortable, clean and well maintained. The air conditioning worked well overnight and kept the room cool enough for a good night’s sleep.
If I was being picky, the only things I’d suggest are:
• Mattresses on the beach sunbeds would make lounging by the sea even more comfortable.
• A few more bins around the resort would be useful. Guests could clear away cups and rubbish more easily, and there didn’t seem to be regular collection of empty glasses in some areas.
That said, neither of these points had any impact on our stay.
We left feeling relaxed, well looked after and already talking about coming back. For anyone looking for a quality all-inclusive with great food, lovely staff and a more authentic feel, we’d highly recommend it.
Top tip - join the steel pan lessons on a Monday morning. There is a small charge but it’s worth it. Ask at reception.
This resort is nothing short of amazing. From the staff to the food in every restaurant. We loved it.
We stayed at Sugar Bay from May 9 to the 15th. We liked Sugar Bay so much last year we came back again. For context, my wife and I are in our early 60’s and this time our grown daughter joined us. We stayed in a family suite overlooking the pool. The family suite was just right with the bedroom having it’s own AC and TV and the main room with pull-out bed had it’s own AC and TV. The small fridge was initially stocked with water, but we had to request new bottles from reception - no pop or beer. There was adequate storage for clothes. Room cleaning was completed nicely every day.
The food was excellent.
• At the Reef buffet restaurant, the staff were efficient at seating us and getting us water & drinks, the dishes at the buffet were well maintained – plenty of great tasting meat, fish, vegetables, desserts, and different every day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all great at the Reef buffet.
• The evening supper at specialty restaurants Sizzle and Umi were excellent; they were more dining experiences – a slower pace, food presented nicely, and great service.
• Collins beach restaurant was also great and convenient.
The beach was nice. The watersport service team does a great job organizing the chairs and setting up the umbrellas with a smile and a quick chat. The beach is protected with a manmade rock barrier but this year we noticed a slight current flowing through the protected area. Snorkeling out by the rocks was ‘OK’ – hundreds of fish but not a great variety.
If you like to walk, Sugar Bay is a great starting point. To the left, after a short 5-minute walk, you’re on the boardwalk and can walk all the way down to Rockley beach – 60 minutes return. To the right, after a short walk on the road (be careful), it’s a nice walk down to Pebbles beach – 90 minutes return.
Sam the Man" approached us on the beach at Sugar Bay. My wife and I and daughter took him up on the offer of a private tour for the next day. He provides a fantastic tour around the outside of the island. He is easy going and very flexible and provides drinks - beer, pop, rum. Stop where you want and stay at the stops for as long as you want - no rush. Great way to see the island with Sam. He knows his way around as well as all the background info. He is well known in Barbados. Would recommend his services if you are up for an island tour - thanks very much Sam!
In summary, we like Sugar Bay because it’s ‘comfortable’. The resort is fairly small, the food is fantastic, the service is quick, staff are polite, the resort is clean and it’s just a carefree week of relaxing.
Great relaxing holiday in Sugar Bay. Nice comfortable rooms, lovely food and great service from all the staff. We have visited previously and returned for a special family celebration. The service from the staff is so friendly and the quality of food is first class.
We stayed at Sugar Bay for two weeks in June with high expectations, but unfortunately our experience was disappointing.
The beach was a major let-down. It is quite small, the sea can be rough, and there was a significant amount of seaweed throughout our stay. In two weeks, there were only a couple of occasions when we could enter the sea without having to make our way through large amounts of brown seaweed.
The hotel itself is looking tired and in need of refurbishment, with numerous repairs required throughout the property. The gym facilities were particularly disappointing. Of the two treadmills available, only one was working, despite reporting the issue to reception on the second day of our holiday and raising it several times afterwards. Other gym equipment was also out of order and remained unrepaired during our stay.
The air conditioning in our room was another issue. It was noisy, only partially effective, and failed to cool the room properly for the entire two weeks.
Based on our experience, I would not recommend this hotel. I would also advise potential guests to read a wide range of reviews on TripAdvisor and other independent review sites before booking.
If visiting Barbados again, I would choose a hotel on the west coast, where the sea is generally calmer and seaweed is much less of an issue.
Our 4th time at Sugarbay and the resort has maintained its high standards in terms of the hotel its upkeep and the friendly staff that made our 10 night stay memorable.
We stayed in ground floor oceanfront signature rooms that were perfect where we could walk straight out to the path and beach.
Main buffet restaurant was of consistently high quality as were both signature restaurants. Collins beach bar and snack restaurant is fabulous for lunch as it is a short step away from the beach.
The bar area has been expanded since our last stay and has improved the layout for the buffet restaurant although I have to say I preferred the feel of the old square openair bar that was situated within the building.
Staff were all fantastic, helpful and forever smiling which made the service and ambience special. Looking forward to returning sometime in the near future for a fifth time !
Only criticsm, we couldn't get near the pool loungers as there is the all to common Brit bed blocking with towels from dawn to dusk that happens at many resorts. We gave up but had more than enough fun on the beautiful beach that serves the ocean lagoon .
Most of the reviews on here are accurate, especially the positive ones, it’s difficult to fault the resort in any way.
All the staff in every department are friendly, courteous and professional in their duties.
They all go about the work with a smile on their face with an upbeat attitude.
We stayed here for the second time for 10 days, the first time was part of a cruise and stay 7 years and they kept our records and welcomed us back with an identifying room bracelet, different colour strap that gets a a conversation going with our guests.
Some guest we found out had been here 14 times of more so that speaks volumes about the place.
The buffet food is well balanced, the two signature restaurants are quality but you only have access to each one once for a 7 day stay.
Would I recommend this resort, absolutely! book it if it’s one of your considerations.
Firstly a huge apology to the team at Sugar Bay for the delay in writing this review, you work too hard not to have it sooner.
To people looking to stay here, if you do, kick back and relax but when you pack remember to pack your manners and respect, they add nothing to your luggage allowance and costs nothing. You work hard to be able to come here and the team work just as hard making your stay the best it can be – don’t be a Leonard....
The team, from management to the gentleman that keeps the beach tidy are great. Huge thanks go to the team that run the Reef Bar, Akheem, Joan, Helen, Damien and Krishion, thank you for keeping us hydrated hic lol. To Kyle C and the team on the beach, thank you for providing us with shade.
Right now to the actual review....
On arrival you are welcomed with a drink of your choice. Reception team are great and full of information.
Rooms.
Are they dated? Well the bathroom was a little out of date but you’re not there for the decor. The showers are amazing and the beds are sooooooo comfortable. The team that clean the rooms are good at what they do. Never a problem with towels and the rooms are always well stocked. Would have preferred to have closed in wardrobes and a few more drawers for clothes but I’m just being picky. Certainly wouldn’t stop me staying again. Had issue with toilet, quick call to reception and within minutes maintenance were there and sorted, safe battery needed changing, again sorted in no time at all. Hairdryer stopped working and it was replaced with a new one still in the box like it had just come from the shop. Good time to point out the hairdryers are not the usual useless ones you normally find in hotel bathrooms they are salon quality and can be used outside of the bathrooms as well.
Restaurants.
There are a few on site but to be honest the main restaurant was so good we never thought to try the others out. The staff here are excellent, food plentiful and fresh and if you are gluten intolerant you won’t starve at Sugar Bay as they have a brilliant selection of food and cakes, you wouldn’t know they were gluten free if there wasn’t a sigh telling you. Good selection of food but would be nice to have more local breakfast items, mainly catered to English and American but I understand why.
Beach
Is there seaweed, err of course there is, it’s a beach. They do their best to keep it clear but it’s not a problem. Seaweed is natural and it didn't bite, and when you’re in the sea you’re in its world you don’t go to the park and moan about there being grass. There was also no smell from the seaweed on the beach. The guys that look after you on the beach are fastastic, big thanks to Kyle C and the team. Attentive, friendly and professional. We had a parasol fall over, due to the wind and nothing to do with them, and they were instantly there making sure everything was OK.
The team at the Reef Bar are second to none, again to those named at the top and apologies to those I may have missed out, again I thank you.
Grounds
Always kept clean and tidy, they are constantly working to make it so. Never saw any bugs.
Didn’t use the pool, not when the beach and the team there were so good so can’t comment on that but like, on the beach, never seemed an issue with there not being enough sunbeds. Towels always plentiful for pool and beach.
Entertainment
Always good entertainment and didn’t finish too late so those with children or wanting an early night were not disturbed.
There is a shop on site which is convenient but don’t let that stop you going out of the hotel and getting the reggae bus, so much fun.
Had reason to email the general manager on our return as he wasn’t available before we left. Morgan you are a star, email was responded to within minutes of it being sent and issue raised was addressed. Must stress this was not an issue with the resort or the team as I can’t praise them enough.
The resort is not huge, it is small and intimate oh and fantastic, but would have been nice to have a little map or information on what was there.
If you’ve managed to stay awake to the end of this review then I thank you and if you ask me would I stay there again.... Without hesitation, it would be my go to resort. Great for families as well.
To whoever at Sugar Bay reads the reviews, can I ask you kindly to pass on my huge thanks to the team, those named and others. They may not read the reviews and I would like them to know their hospitality is truly appreciated.
I will be back..... Have no doubt... Enjoy
Best family vacation to date - we travelled with our two young daughters (1 & 3 years old) the 1st week of June.
Beach: 10/10 - the water is beautiful and has a shallow entrance which was a great spot for my daughters to swim and play in. Due to the man made rocks, it helped break down the waves, so we had no issues hanging out and playing with sand toys at the shore line. It was always easy to find beach chairs, and the men from the sports hut easily set up umbrellas for us.
Food: 10/10 - this is the best all inclusive food we've had. The Reef buffet is small however that was the beauty of it - no need to walk around and be indecisive with what to eat. All the food they had (esp. the local Bajan good ) was sooooo good. We all still think about the food. We also enjoyed Collin's for lunch - once again great options/specials daily.
Room - 10/10: We stayed in the family ocean suite and it was spacious and accommodated our family of 4. They also provided a wonderful crib, toddler bath tub, diaper pails.
Kids Club - Kaiya and Keisha were amazing - our little ones still recall their names and wonder how they're doing. My 3 year old was able to make bracelets (which she loves to wear), do arts and crafts, play in their outdoor park. Overall it was a nice change in our day to visit the Kids Club in the evening time before dinner.
Staff - 10/10, everyone we encountered were friendly and welcoming. Happy to always help us and say hello to our daughters.
We will definitely be coming back here again - I hope this helps for other families as I relied on other guests' reviews and it really helped plan my trip.
See you again Sugar Bay!
Sugar Bay is a fantastic resort in a great location, the beach is great and the sea weed isn't a problem because of the man made breakers, the food is great and the staff are very helpful, there are only a couple of issues that need to be addressed, every morning at the pool guests leave towels reserving beds for the day and you cant get a bed, there is a sign posted that says towels and hats aren't a reservation but they don't enforce it at all, also there are glasses all around the pool all day and its not cleaned up.
This was our first time in Barbados and Sugar Bay did not disappoint!! Lovely hotel, friendly staff and excellent food. It is situated on its own private beach where loungers were always available. The pool was warm, clean and inviting especially the swim up bar. The nightly entertainment was great. We would highly recommend a stay here at this hotel - certainly gets 10/10 from us!
We had a great time at Sugar Bay for 9 nights. Food really is excellent at all times, we really enjoyed the variety also. Rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious with good air conditioning. The grounds were really nice, pleasant atmosphere, lovely views and friendly helpful staff. We particularly loved the beach and pool bars and variety of cocktails to relax with. Hired a car for a couple of days to explore the island which the concierge sorted for us with ease. A lovely stay and highly recommended
The resort was excellent, The staff went out of there way to make you feel comfortable. The food and the entertainment was great too. I would highly recommend come and visit because you wont be disappointed.
My grandson and I just returned from a weeklong stay at Sugar Bay - it was a fabulous week; so much so, that we extended our stay by a night. The hotel graciously and efficiently accommodated out request for an extra night. I can honestly say Sugar Bay is now at the top of our list for island stays with children. . . I appreciated the smaller footprint of the property, and the authentic island feel. The property is beautiful, centrally located, Quiet and well maintained; the staff friendly and competent.
A few personal mentions (in stark contrast to some negative comments I read on TA): Firstly, the water sports team rocks! They hustled all day. . . . early morning raking the sand and organizing chairs. . . . promptly putting up umbrellas with a smile, swapping out towels, etc. They were cheerful and courteous, ALWAYS.
Secondly, the food was amazing. The buffet spread at Reef restaurant provided great variety . . . something for everyone. The chefs here do a topnotch job! The carving / saute' stations always offering up something delectable . . . . all the food stations on the buffet were fresh and impeccably kept, staff regularly checking that quantity was sufficient. The waitstaff was attentive in clearing our empty plates and checking on drinks.
I highly recommend Sugar Bay Resort and certainly plan to return.
We went to Sugar Bay last April to meet up with some long time Barbados Buddies from Canada. We have been travelling to Barbados since 1992 and this was our 37th visit to Barbados but our first time staying at Sugar Bay. We had a great 10 nights because everyone we encountered whether it was the staff or the other guests we became part of the furniture, very quickly. We have booked a return trip see you April 2027🇨🇦✈️🇧🇧☀️🍹🍍
Absolutely amazing beautiful hotel and beautiful people. Perfect!!! Ocean front deluxe room was lovely. Every aspect of the hotel is designed to make everything easy. Pure relaxation. The staff are the most amazing bunch of wonderful human beings who are so happy, helpful and welcoming. They are an absolute credit to the owners. Their hard work and beautiful personalities make Sugar Bay and our holiday perfect. Been to many Caribbean countries/hotels and this is the best bu far! Don't change a thing! Definitely will be back. Big mention to Gerard, Romario, Jesus, Natalie. Each and everyone of you are so lovely. Thank you 😊
