Hotel Lis Baixa

Great location

The staff is great! Very welcoming and helpful with answering questions and making recommendations.

My wife and I booked directly with the hotel 2 months (April 5) before our stay. We did not use a 3rd party site. Upon arrival (June 4) they informed us we've been upgraded to their sister hotel. Despite repeatedly asking why, we were not give a reason. As quick as they could they put us in a cab and sent us on our way.

The sister hotel was not an upgrade. It did not have the room amenities we paid for and was much further from where we wanted to stay in Lisbon. We had preplanned the restaurants and activities we wanted. One of the reasons we chose Hotel Lis Baixa was because it was in the middle of where we needed to be and had received very good reviews.

Communication with hotel management was ineffective. It took them 10 days to respond to my email about this situation and only after me prodding them. Their response was just like their front desk person: polite but condescending. I got the feeling they were just trying to say anything to appease me so I would go away.

I then asked management for a partial refund. I would have been happy to be reimbursed just the extra premiums I paid to be able to cancel the booking. (That option expired the day before we arrived, so we were locked in.) I didn't cancel on them. They cancelled on me. Again, I received a polite but condescending "No."

I wish we could have stayed at Hotel Lis Baixa. We were looking forward to it.

It was very well located, and staff was very helpful. There was an enormous variety of food for breakfast, and everything was delicious.

Hotel Lis Baixa is in a perfect spot if you want to be close to restaurants, the waterfront as well as Praca Dom Pedro IV - a vibrant and colourful city square. And it was half the price of any hotel nearby. The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant where they served a nice buffet breakfast of hot and cold items was lovely. But the rooms were very small and a little tired - they could use a bit of updating but ultimately that could impact the price. We did book a balcony room which was really not worth it because you could barely fit out there. Unfortunately the room was a bit dark with heavy drapes hard to push aside. However, out of all the hotels in Portugal that we stayed in, we slept the best at Hotel Lis Baixa as the beds were quite comfortable and the room was nice and cool. The bathroom was quite large with a great shower but the floor of the shower was a bit slippery. I also did not like the combination body wash/shampoo that was offered so ended up buying shampoo and conditioner at a local grocery store. The real draw of this hotel was the location and for that reason, a great sleep and a wonderful breakfast, I would highly recommend it - not to mention the price. Oh and it sells out quickly so book early.
