I am writing this review to warn fellow travelers about the severe lack of maintenance, misleading communication, and safety concerns at the Best Western in Newmarket on Yonge Street. While I have historically trusted the Best Western brand, this particular location is operating at a standard that severely compromises guest comfort, accessibility, and personal safety.
While the room itself was clean, the property suffers from obvious cost-cutting and severe deferred maintenance. If you are booking here, be aware of several systemic issues:
Room 111 Layout: Avoid this ground-floor room. The window looks directly into the underside of an exterior staircase and a stored snowblower, making the space feel more like a maintenance closet than a hospitality suite. To make matters worse, a persistent, unpleasant odor emanated from the HVAC unit throughout my stay.
Bathroom Safety, Hygiene & Poor Accessibility: The bathroom is poorly designed and a total liability. The bathroom towels provided were visibly stained from previous use, which is unacceptable. Furthermore, the toilet paper holder is placed directly behind the door, requiring a guest to stretch past 90 degrees just to access it, a frustrating challenge for anyone, but incredibly difficult to navigate with mobility concerns. Additionally, the shampoo holder was completely detached and sitting at the base of the tub, and the loose shower trim plate rattled aggressively against the tile due to wildly inconsistent water pressure. Most alarmingly, the provided rubber anti slip mat is entirely ineffective, creating a severe slip-and-fall hazard.
Lack of Basic Hospitality Standards: The in-room alarm clock malfunctioned, going off repeatedly at random hours of the night. Because it couldn't be disabled via the interface, I had to unplug it from a cheap, questionable surge protector. This is also the first hotel I have ever encountered that refuses to provide plastic liners for the garbage cans.
Misleading Accessibility Info: As a senior navigating a disability, I was assured by the front desk that parking would be directly outside my room door. This was entirely false. No parking was available there, forcing me into an unexpected trek around the front of the building, creating an unnecessary physical hardship and safety hazard.
Insecure Atmosphere: The environment felt entirely unmonitored. The guest in the adjacent room spent the evening smoking with their door wide open, creating an incredibly sketchy and uncomfortable atmosphere. I have never felt unsafe at a lodging property until this stay.
This location failed on all counts regarding baseline dignity, safety, and operational quality. I have reached out to corporate management regarding these violations of brand standards. Until major changes are made, I strongly advise looking elsewhere.
Very centrally located
Nowhere to get breakfast. The adjacent restaurant was fully booked the morning we were there so we couldn’t get anything. Also a lot of construction on the street directly in front, which isn’t the fault of the property but…
Staff was friendly
My motel room was very cold and almost impossible to keep warm. It was very loud at all hours of the night and early morning and smelled like cigarette smoke. There was almost no water pressure in the shower. There was also construction blocking most access to the hotel.
