Lovely location, hidden in gardens but walking distance to the center of town. Large rooms, new bathrooms, firm beds, nice bar, lovely gardens. Excellent value for money.
Not much, it does cater for conferences so larger groups do come in.
The staff were a real credit to the hotel. Welcoming, friendly, professional and helpful.
Very easy walk into the city with all its amenities and attractions
Nice building and grounds
Great location a few minutes walk to the town centre. I had an early morning hospital appointment and so stayed here as it is also close. I don't feel I got the full experience of the Alverton as it was very busy the only morning I was there and I wasn't able to have breakfast but looking around the breakfast looked good and I look forward to trying it next time I visit. The room was lovely and clean and staff were lovely.
The hotel definitely has a strong visual charm, but unfortunately, the reality of staying here put a damper on the overall impression.
➕ Pros:
Aesthetics & Location: Very beautiful grounds and a great location — the hotel looks stylish and highly photogenic.
Staff: Extremely friendly and welcoming team.
Room Amenities: The room had absolutely everything we needed. The exceptionally wide selection of tea and coffee-making facilities was a wonderful touch.
Dining: The breakfasts were quite tasty.
Unfortunately, two major downsides completely ruined everything good about this hotel:
Odors & Dampness: Inside, there is a heavy, unpleasant, stale smell. The hotel tries to mask it with essential oils, but this only makes the situation worse. The air inside is so humid that your clothes become damp almost instantly (and this was during days with only brief, light rain).
The Wardrobe Issue: There is literally nowhere to put your clothes. The authentic antique wardrobe smelled so awful inside that we were afraid to even open it — your clothes would have instantly soaked up that terrible odor.
Lack of Attention to Detail (for a premium room!): We booked an upgraded suite, but the cleanliness left much to be desired. The extractor fan in the bathroom was dirty and covered in cobwebs, there were cobwebs in the corners of the room, and the entrance door was heavily scuffed and scratched. For a higher-tier room, this is unacceptable.
📌 Verdict:
If your only goal is to take striking photos for Instagram in beautiful interiors, then a 1-night stay is perfectly fine. But honestly, after a long day of exploring Cornwall, returning here three nights in a row was the last thing we wanted to do. We would not come back.
Lovely old building with lots of character and charm.
Quality staff, food and rooms for a good value break.

Lovely old building. Quiet location
Food was mediocre. Some staff were helpful and well informed - others just didn’t seem very aware and weren’t attentive.. Service was very slow
Beautiful building and clean
Nothing to dis like at all. External building is beautiful internal a bit more worn but that is being very critical. One breakfast server had dirty trousers but very good with their customer service.
Breakfast and staff attitude very good.
Decor tired,particularly carpets.
Seagulls becoming a pest on terrace, single nest behind chimney. Discreet message to guests on wall ,please do not feed the seagulls.
I often find it difficult to find good hotel accommodation in Truro so was pleased to be able to book into The Alverton.
A smart, rather unique venue - however it did appear to be a little tired in places.
Enjoyed dinner and was rather amused at the young waiter's honesty when he said he knew nothing about wine so was unable to recommend!
Booked to stay overnight for my husband’s birthday. When we arrived we were given a complementary upgrade to a lovely large room with sparkling wine waiting for us. Despite there being a large wedding party going on during our stay, the staff were extremely helpful & accommodating to the other guests needs. Would thoroughly recommend & will definitely be returning in the future.
