Strathburn Hotel are conning the public with their on line photographs. The idyllic lawn, main photo, set with tables is actually an unkempt wilderness, uncut grass and heaps of rubbish. Room/Suite, photo 28 has been divided to provide two poky and dark bedrooms. Manager Charlie is striving to please, but faults, ie WHB pop up plug not working, no TV signal, one bedside cabinet, (no space) points to lack of maintenance. Staff friendly, room clean, food good, but restricted menu. Won't return.
Charlie was an excellent host and Jack of all trades made the visit lovely. Food was excellent!
A comfortable, old style hotel with friendly and efficient staff who went out of their way to make our birthday get together stay special.
Fabulous chef especially the gluten free rolls - freshly prepared and the best I've ever tasted.
Super choice of hot and continental breakfast, freshly prepared when you arrived.
Our rooms were clean, warm and comfortable even if the hotel could do with a revamp.
The menu was fairly limited for choice particularly for gluten free options.
Great welcome on arrival and our room was exactly what we needed. We were allowed to check in early so that was very helpful.
Plenty of space, a big bathroom and the hotel was well situated. The bar was lovely and the breakfast room was also nice. We were staying for a local wedding and the hotel was perfect for our needs.
The staff were lovely and this was a good hotel.
Nothing! All was lovely.

The room
A fridge
I am not sure what rating scale has been used to give this hotel 4 stars as it definitely is no more than a three in my book.
Don’t get me wrong as I have just returned from a pleasant weekend away with a group of friends. But what 4 star hotel runs out of the little milk “jiggers” they leave in your room, runs out of Pinot Grigio, has no gluten free bread even when advised months in advance about dietary requirements. Has no fresh fruit salad after the first days breakfast. Defrosted frozen fruit was available.
The handle on the toilet in my room was hanging by a thread when I arrived, sometimes no water was running from the tap. Another persons toilet would barely flush but that didn’t seem to be an issue. It’s just slow to fill or non existent as the case may be. A shower which didn’t work.
Why serve 7 people at a table and leave one with no meal. I had finished when that dinner arrived. There were definite serving issues on Saturday night which I believe was the chefs night off.
The rooms should be fully functioning before guests arrive and the kitchen should be fully stocked and not run out of goods after all it is advertised as a 4 star hotel.
My report card says “ could do better with not a lot of effort”
Food was good
Hotel a bit tired2
Very friendly staff, fairly clean room, comfortable bed and lovely meal in restaurant. Hotel looking a bit old and tired and in need of upgrade. Didn't have breakfast, I wanted a simple continental breakfast but the price was £12.50 same as full breakfast, which seemed odd. Don't like shower curtains! If you want a comfortable overnight stay at reasonable cost (except breakfast) I would recommend.
Every single encounter with hotel staff was so nice. The rooms are very nice; everything spotlessly clean. Supper was delicious as was breakfast. Lovely place and people. Will stay again if in the area.
This hotel was listed as 4 star, I would list it as 2 star no more. The girl on reception was pleasant. That was where it ended. My friend walks with 2 sticks but no assistance with cases or bags was offered...not even to open the door through to the rooms. We were in rooms 31 and 33. The shower cubicle in my friends room was black around the shower tray....she didn't use it. The view through the window to the "garden" was somewhat disappointing...disgarded piles of wire and piping in a heap and a bath leant against a wall. My room was small, I had booked double rooms. My bed appeared to be made up of 2 beds....the headboard did not fit. To get to the window to close the curtains I had to lean across a suitcase stand, a table, a trouser press and a full length mirror...the wardrobe had been pushed against these items making it very difficult to even look outside....but of course the view was the same as my friends room...a tip ! The room was chilly in the night and the quilt very thin...there was no blanket ( or extra pillows ) in the room. the wallpaper was peeling off and screws sticking out of the wall where presumably something had been removed...but the screws left sticking out. There were dirty smudges on the wall...did not want to think too deeply about what they might be ! My shower tray was dirty in the corner and the shower very slow to drain. But the most memorable were the holes in the bed bases with the fabric hanging off ! It felt grubby and more like a storage room than a hotel bedroom. Dinner was served on tables, no cloth, on a raised platform in the bar....not in the restaurant. The menu was beefburger in a bun or fish and chips. I opted for the special...a fish steak on a bed of vegetables, my friend had chicken. We were the only people there but even so we waited an hour for our food. The fish turned out to be a thin fillet on potatoes, onions and red pepper strips. The chicken tasted off.
We then ordered sorbet but the girl had forgotten we were there and we had to call her as went to the bar. Breakfast was in the dining room....we went a half hour before the end of breakfast time, the hot food looked sad...we had toast and cereal instead. The coffee and hot water were in pump action dispensers....both were lukewarm.
On leaving the hotel it was noted that the fire extinguisher was in it's bracket but not on the wall but leaning against it on the floor ! Needless to say we will not be visiting the hotel again !
