The location and grounds of the hotel were very nice and the entrance looks lovely as you drove up to it.
Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing for several reasons.
Although it was a very hot day and evening, none of the rooms we booked had air conditioning. The rooms became extremely hot, and despite opening the windows as much as possible, there was very little airflow, making them quite uncomfortable.
As a disabled guest, who had given the hotel prior notice of my accessibility issues, I also found the accessibility incredibly poor. There were no ground-floor twin rooms available when we arrived at 12:30pm, so we were allocated a first-floor room. Unfortunately, there was no lift, only several flights of stairs, which made accessing our room difficult and inconvenient.
We had also booked dinner at the Oak Restaurant in advance. We were required to pay a deposit and pre-order our meals, so it was very disappointing to arrive and be told that some of the dishes we had already selected were unavailable. It seemed strange to ask guests to choose and pay in advance if those choices could not be guaranteed.
The most concerning issue occurred at checkout. We paid our bill at reception using Apple Pay on the card machine, but the hotel also attempted to take payment using the card originally used to make the booking, resulting in a duplicate charge of over £200 being placed on our account. We were told the pending transaction would automatically be released within around 10 days, but we couldn’t understand how this had happened when the bill had already been paid in person. After making a complaint and contacting both our bank and the hotel’s accounts manager, the duplicate payment was finally released after four days. While the issue was eventually resolved, it caused unnecessary stress and inconvenience.
Overall, there were several avoidable issues during our stay that significantly affected our experience.
Ok
Ok
Overall, decent, especially given the dearth of choices in the area. Staff were pleasant.
Quite dated and basic, but worst of all, no aircon - given increasing prevalence of heatwaves amid climate change, it’s time to start investing; fan helped but wasn’t adequate. Rooms lack a refrigerator; staff did quickly provide us one upon request. It’s a destination for golfers, but otherwise isolated.
Hotel is in a beautiful setting and the building is lovely. Public areas and facilities are impressive.
For the price I paid and the number of stars ('Premier Collection'), I expected better. The rooms are OK but they feel 'tired' and are probably overdue refurbishment. There was no air conditioning, although a fan was provided. The window catch didn't work so I struggled to open the window (room was unbearably hot) and then I couldn't secure it again! Being by a flat roof, this was a security concern. Cleanliness of the room was fair but superficial - I was not impressed by having to unblock the shower trap and get the shower thermostat working properly.
Car charging and location
The environment was not conducive to a Hotel with Spa facilities and should have been calming and relaxing
No air conditioning in the room or the breakfast area
A walk-in shower would have been more suitable in a cramped area and the toilet was difficult to access because it was behind the bathroom door. The tiling and grouting under the sink area was not up to standard
It was difficult to get a parking space and was tight when manoeuvring the car into a space
The food provided was basic and choices were limited
The building itself and the staff were great. The pool was nice. Breakfast was good.
The room was small, very hot (no aircon and just one fan) the flush on the loo didn't work properly, the bed springs were shot so it was very uncomfy.
Lovely grounds and near to where I needed to be.
If I’m honest the bedroom (single) I was in needed a bit of TLC apart from that all was good
We visited the Country Kitchen for a Sunday Carvery. The staff were great especially the chef who was very friendly. The portions were extremely generous with great quality meat. There was also an amazing selection for the starters and desserts
We have stayed here twice now and on both occasions we have received amazing service. The atmosphere is relaxed, there are plenty of staff around who are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The hotel is located next to a golf course with a lovely garden seating area. Our room was large with all the amenities you could want. The restaurant has a traditional feel with wood panelling and the food was excellent with lots of choice and again great service from the staff. I would definitely recommend a visit for a short break.
Nothing
The room was the smallest I have ever stayed in over fifty years of travel. The shower was so small it was almost impossible to turn around. In terms of value for money it could be described as a "rip-off"
Location
Very poor value for money. No air conditioning! Room outdated. Minute shower.
