Staff and location
Not in good repair and not very clean.
I traveled from MA to Iowa and stayed in a few places. On the way home stopped here. It was hands down the best place. Very clean! Room was spacious as well as the bathroom. It was quiet and didn’t have a funny smell. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Our stay at the Holiday Inn Express on Secor Road in Toledo was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences we have ever had, and it fell far below the basic standards we expect when booking a room.
The room itself had significant mildew covering the bathroom ceiling above the tub and shower, dirt on the bathroom walls, and visibly dirty corners around the tub, all of which are basic cleanliness issues that should never be present in any hotel room, especially one that is part of a well-known chain. We have stayed at HIE hotels many times before, and this was far below the typical experience we have had in other locations.
**Even more concerning was what happened in the hallway, where there was *vomit* on the floor directly next to a trash can when we arrived, and although we immediately notified the front desk and were assured it would be taken care of, it was not removed at any point during the night. The next morning I followed up again and was told, “Oh, housekeeping will arrive in an hour and I will tell them,” yet when we checked out at 11:00 AM the vomit was still there, which made it clear that nothing had been done despite multiple notifications.
That level of inaction represents an extraordinary failure in basic housekeeping and sanitation.
The pool was another major issue because it was packed and chaotic with unsupervised children and teenagers, which made it feel unsafe for our 6- and 8-year-old children, so we had to explain to our heartbroken children why they couldn't swim even though everyone else was swimming, when they had been so excited to do so.
There were also several maintenance problems that added to the frustration, including a card reader for the outdoor patio that did not work and outlets next to the bed that were nonfunctional, which meant I had to plug my CPAP machine into an outlet on the floor in an inconvenient and impractical setup.
To the hotel's credit, they did provide a $50 credit, although I would have much rather paid full price for a clean, safe, and functional hotel stay than received any credit for an experience that was this poor and disappointing.
A hotel room should be clean, hallways should be sanitary, basic amenities should work properly, and guests especially families with children should be able to feel safe and comfortable using the facilities without concern.
Unfortunately, this stay fell far below what I expect from Holiday Inn Express, and as a result we will not be returning, nor can I recommend this hotel to anyone.
*Note* The photo of the vomit is after it sat for 14+ hours and had completely dried.
• Well done perfectly cooked bacon at breakfast!
• Breakfast itself had a good variety of other items too.
• Down side was the toilet would turn on and off most likely due to a seal that would hold water in the tank as intended.
Breakfast and pool cleanliness
The room was clean and very comfortable. The location is great because there were restaurants within walking distance. I usually have a hard time sleeping in hotels, but I slept great due to the comfortableness of the bed.
The area by the elevators on my floor had dried vomit and was not clean by the trash can. The breakfast could've been better. Didn't like the cheese egg omelet but would've preferred scrambled eggs which gives more flexibility. The choices of meat were limited to sausage patties but would've preferred to have a choice of bacon.
The iron that was in the room was bad but they replaced it
Didn’t eat breakfast
Wonderful over all feeling
Nothing
None of the power plugs or USB ports by the beds worked. The power and USB under the TV doesn't work and the blinds are broken. They will not move up or down. Told the night clerk and manager both about these issues and was told they know about these issues and apparently there are multiple rooms with the same issues and they refuse to fix them. Manager tried blaming the maintenance staff. Either way - this falls solely on the franchise owner of this property. I travel a lot and stay almost exclusively at IHG properties. In fact this is the 5th Holiday Inn Express I've stayed in this year thus far, and this is by far the jankiest IHG property I've ever stayed in.
Clean, engaged staff, comfortable. Close to food options. Good breakfast.
Some kind of odor. Smokey, essential oil? Vape? Wasn’t quite right.
The fire alarm that went off early in the morning
The community.
Escorted to the room at all time. No key access to customer.
