The Great Western Hotel

The room and bathroom were tiny; the bathroom was dirty (mouldy - mould that could be wiped off, not just deep growing mould); TV was not plugged in and we needed to move furniture in order to find the powerpoint; and the whole hotel generally appeared run down and in need of some upgrades and updating. What was worst though, was that we had an early morning ferry to catch and had gone to bed early - at 9pm we were woken by the bass of music playing. After being kept awake for over an hour, and realising that the music was coming from the hotel itself, I had to go down to the front desk (no phone to call front desk) and ask what was going on - it turned out there was one party of people that had arrived that evening and this was a private entertainment for them. The late night front desk staff were polite but I was told they could do nothing to help. I think this is terrible - this is not a bar or a public area where you may expect late night music - and that it was for one party and this was then impacting on other guests was disgraceful.

Rooms very dated and old fashioned, windows were rotted, damp on the roof, bathroom very very poor

Unable to fulfil their cotract by providing accessible accommodation. Staff unpleasant,unhelpful & rude. Manger was indifferent to the stress & inconvenience caused.
Saturday, late afternoon we frantically searched for alternative accommodation.
The building is dilapidated, dirty & not fit for purpose. Should not be allowed to charge for inadequate accommodation. Should be closed for refurbishment.

Run down, dirty, lift out of order, I met older people with mobility issues who struggled with the stairs. Dried blood on front door of hotel. Staff informed, nothing done. Peeling wallpaper, crumbling walls, disinterested staff, mouldy smell. Apparently it’s “under refurbishment “. It needs knocking down and rebuilding.
Will never return. You should remove this hotel from your website.

The room was extremely tired, the shower mat was extremely dirty and had hairs and what I can only assume was fecies underneath when I took it out the shower, I saw rubbish left from the previous unfortunate guest between the bed and bedside table. The wall beside the bed was dirty from previous guests. Why not be upfront about the parking they advertise, it's £10 a night but no one tells you untill your at check in.

They need to spend some money on it

Rather run down grand old building with creaky floorboards and the occasional peeling wallpaper. Lift out of commission during our stay. Twin room with sea view adequate for a short stay but large single glazed windows somewhat draughty. Curtains difficult to draw on the night due to long length and cheap plastic track which sticks and risks being pulled down.
Kettle etc adequate but a couple of glasses would have been welcomed.

Lift out of order

On arrival I was given a room on the third floor, I was then informed that the lift was out of order.
Fortunately I am able bodied and was only carrying an overnight bag.
The climb to the room up a shabby depressing damp stairway was a precursor to the room I was to stay in.Signs of damp and wallpaper peeling off were the decorative theme.
The bath was missing a shower screen and when I asked at reception about this I was informed that there should be one, I informed the receptionist I was aware of this and that was why I was highlighting the matter to them. I was informed that the maintenance man had left the building but it would be seen to the next day.
If I had been aware of the state of this building I would never have booked.
In my opinion I would have been better getting arrested by the local constabulary and spending the night in a cell.
I am sure the fine for a minor offence would have been less than I was charged to stay in the Great Western Hotel.
However on a plus note the breakfast was very nice but overall a dismal experience.
As an Obanite who was returning to his home town for a night I can only say if this is the standard we are providing no wonder folk go abroad .
