My brother kindly gave my wife a Voucher for 2 to their "Chapel Down Afternoon Tea" to celebrate her recent 80th birthday. They offered to join us to make a nice family outing. The good news is that the food offering was largely first class. Hot arancini balls to start, followed by warm scones and generous servings of clotted cream and strawberry jam, then superbly fresh finger sandwiches with interesting fillings and finally a selection of four cakes each. Tea could be chosen from a detailed menu but Earl Grey was fine for me.
The disappointing aspect was the room. Orange and brown upholstered chairs, fake wood tables, no sign of crisp white table cloths or napkins, tables covered in previous guests cutlery and plates. More school canteen than 4-star hotel (previous owners The Goring Family would be horrified). My own grouse was that all the Blue Badge spaces adjacent to the hotel were all reserved and unusable but without a single vehicle occupying these valuable spaces. If this is the hotel policy, then it should be advised to prospective guests on booking so that we too can have the chance to make a reservation - as it happens my brother and I both have Blue Badges and as he is particularly immobile, a park space near the hotel would have been very welcome.
The other concern related to the hotel admin. They phoned me three times in the previous 48 hours to confirm my booking and then staff had difficulty producing our bill on departure.
Great spa, beautiful room on top floor, delicious breakfast and wonderful service from the staff!
Breakfast service was very good
Bar food in the evening
Beautiful grounds at the back. The room was comfortable and well equipped with a very clean bathroom. The spa was nice with a good sized pool, big steam room, mixed sauna plus a women's only sauna in the changing room. The walk across the common to town was convenient. Staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was generous. I'd definitely stay again.
The Sunday Full English buffet wasn't great - should have ordered from the menu instead as this was good the previous day (and was available, though with a 15 - 20 minute wait). Spa changing room was a bit small and dated - became crowded and not easy to get changed afterwards. It's a shame the new spa with extra facilities isn't included with regular bookings.
Good standard room for the price, very clean. Family run hotel beats the big chains.
Small basic TV
Lovely clean generous sized rooms. Very comfortable bed and spacious room.
Reception staff and housekeeping staff very helpful.
Breakfast was lovely - buffet for pastries, cold meats, yogurt and cereal. Plus a menu with lots of choices. Staff very courteous and helpful.
There were plenty of facilities and staff were helpful. We only stayed overnight for a wedding so didn’t use the facilities.
The bathrooms are old and a bit tired. There was a loud air conditioning unit outside our window. At check out the staff tried to charge us late check out while we were checking out early!
Great stay - Nice room. Was gice4n a free upgrade which was nice.
Shower wasnt great.
Great ambience downstairs with the background music
Staff lovely

Option of spa facilities

Noise - after travelling over 6 hours, we where desperate for a good night sleep only to discover an event on that was underneath (near) to our room so could hear the music continue until 12pm…obviously not late but not convenient when your over tired with plans the next day- maybe guests should be told on arrival or automatically allocated a room in a quieter area if they are not participating in the hotel event!
The window blinds have chains so high I could barely reach to close them, especially the bedroom one that has a table in the way, luckily my husband could reach.
(Only mentioning these things because it asks).
My husband and I chose to have Sunday lunch in The Orangery restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant has a light and airy outlook over the beautiful grounds, the menu was varied and the service was superb. When the food arrived, it was absolutely delicious and portions were generous given it was a fixed price menu. We were looked after by Maisie who was incredibly helpful especially as I am a vegetarian. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she is a superb representative of the hotel. Would thoroughly recommend eating here; we have done so several times previously and never been disappointed. Today's visit was made extra special due to the service so many thanks, Maisie.
