3 star hotel with 5 star prices
Pros:

A real mixed bag this place. We had the 4 poster bedroom with lake view and it was beautiful, as were the grounds and scenery outside the hotel. But inside was very dated, old brown carpet all through the hotel, like going to your nans house as a young kid. That kind of decor. The prices were also insane! We’re not frugal by any means and have no problem spending over the odds if it’s worth it, but £55 for 2 small, cold sandwiches one with just salad in it and 2 cocktails, one of which was wrong, (asked for a mojito, received a rum with lemonade) this after not having the ingredients in stock for the cocktail I actually wanted, was crazy. Also £9.20 for one pint, beyond London prices. It just doesn’t add up, especially when there’s a 10% service charge added every time you want something from the bar. The evening meal was quite nice and enjoyable, but at breakfast there was over a 45 minute wait and had gone off my appetite by the time it arrived..and with only 3 other groups at breakfast at this time it’s hard to justify the delay.

Nice place but overpriced.
Pros:

Attentive staff, gorgeous grounds, and lovely views. Clean room, comfy large bed. Staff were very accommodating provided a mini fridge and iron on request and even rang to let me know I had left a bracelet.

Cons:

Very over priced and Ambleside and Windermere are both far away, no local shops or anything nearby. Not much hot water for a shower, shower over bath and bath doesn’t drain shower water away enough. Small average room for the price and small tv. £18 for a double gin, bar food menu limited and quite pricey. Paid £370 for two nights with no breakfast.

So pleased to have been able to stay at Cragwood again and we want to come again soon!
Pros:

Beautiful gardens going down to the lake - carefully planted and maintained. Incredibly friendly staff. Curious building with quirky staircases and large formal rooms. Drinks on the terrace overlooking Lake Windermere - what's not to like. Oh and great food, served efficiently. Very pet friendly and sympathetic with our very old dog.

Cons:

All good

Good but not wonderful
Pros:

The extensive grounds and lakeside access. The breakfast selection and quality. The friendly character of the place. The location generally for easy access to Bowness, Ambleside and other lakes. Good free parking. Friendly and helpful staff.

Cons:

Difficult to find entrance from road particularly at night...lights needed on gate pillars.
Somewhat bland and dated decor throughout.
Specifically to our ground floor room 23...rather dark and gloomy. Bedside lighting for reading difficult to access and not very bright. Other light switches quite a stretch from bed. Wetroom shower very messy...perhaps good for disabled people but we are not. This room had been offered by Booking .com as an upgrade for which we were not charged but looking round at say room 17 we would have been better with original and had a proper bath. When mentioned an alternative room offered but we had a lot of stuff to move so declined.
The set menu at £59 was very well presented and cooked but at that price supplements for tiny scallop..one.. starter and £12 extra for cheeseboard albeit excellent..seemed excessive. Though not mentioned on menu 10% service charge was added and only on querying was I told that it is mentioned on booking details and was optional. The whole with some wine came out at £176 for 2.. after service charge removed.

Beautiful hotel with stunning views
Pros:

Beautiful hotel with stunning views of Lake Windermere & very well kept grounds. Friendly, helpful staff. We stayed in a ground floor room number 23 for 2 nightd due to my husbands disability. Beautiful little patio & lucky to have great weather sitting out in the sunshine. Easy access, large comfortable room, shower seat & room. Breakfast was lovely with hot & cold selection. Grace was very helpful with ideas on where to go & always very friendly. Great accessible parking

Fabulous hotel, lovely room and great staff.
Pros:

Lovely property and staff serving breakfast in the morning were very accommodating. Dog friendly as well which is always good for us.

Cons:

Be aware that outside the dog rooms there is an unused small swimming pool which is empty but has woodland/weather debris in. Very muddy!!! Be cautious if you are walking with young children or have a dog that likes to swim!! Incidentally you are near the lake at the bottom of the hill. Our dog played deaf and forgot stay command!! 🐾🤣🐾😈

A lovely stay apart from the dogs
Pros:

Beautiful grounds and hotel. Staff are so warm and friendly. Breakfast was nice and we saw guests get flasks for their walks which was a nice touch. Rooms were spotless and good tea and coffee facilities. Only downside was dogs were allowed in the hotel and they woke us up barking despite moving rooms. The walls are thin and doors were banging at 4am.

A real treat.
Pros:

Our second visit to Cragwood was even better than our first. Lovely, spotlessly clean room (and I'm fussy!) with plenty of space and a wonderfully powerful shower. The grounds in springtime are just gorgeous. The food is delicious (though we really wish the menu changed more often - even just one new dish each night or couple of nights would be great. We would stay longer if it did). The staff are so friendly. It is beginning to feel like home! We will be back.
