Schooner Hotel

Menu not English mains as stated /no breakfast menu / no breakfast for veggies offered. no table cloths/saucers/teaspoons . Coffee machine broke down and substitute- horrible -watery. Dangerous stair- flapping carpets, rope and pipe handrail. Bedroom carpet filthy. No daily tea tray filled. Staff 2/ rooms 32 ratio ? No information for visitors . No organisation . No key signing in for safety . Fire -1 staff only A man in street called 999 staff man ran in and out of building with T shirt over mouth and wedged door open into street .

Dirty room, third rate-barely working l facilities, poor service from the staff - using the haunted gimmick as a bad excuse to rip off guests with extortionate prices. We booked a room for 1 night at the Schooner hotel at an up front cost of £197 (including breakfast). When we arrived (10:30pm) to check-in the staff attempted to make us pay again for breakfast (£15 per head) and the dog (£20) and argued (despite the booking.com receipt and out bank statement suggesting otherwise) that we had not paid the full amount. Eventually they gave up and handed us the room key. We were jokingly told the room was haunted, the reality was that the only haunting that occurred was on our sense of value for money. The room was unclean, tired and dusty. The bathroom had flies buzzing around the light, and the facilities were barely functional. Avoid this hotel unless you've got a penchant for being ripped off.

P.S. we were given room 28 (not haunted, that’s nonsense, just manky with paper thin walls so you can hear your neighbour using the loo).

Rooms a bit worn, hard to find a member of staff and breakfast terrible. Expected more for full English at £13.

Parking was a problem

Nothing much to fault; if anything just a few minor things such as we thought the bathroom door might benefit from a coat of paint and the heater had paint marks on it (I'm sure these are on the owners list of to do's 😄)
The beds were quite firm, personally would have preferred a softer mattress.
We ate out so can't comment on the restaurant.
Can be difficult to find parking, we managed to get a space after driving round a bit, and carried our bags about a 2 minute walk to the hotel.
Despite the minor negative points it didn't spoil our stay, and we would return.

The room was very dated and many things were damaged or dirty. The floors through were weirdly uneven and spongy. There was no toilet roll or bath mat, the towels were small and old. The toilet was cracked, and the shower over water got everywhere. No hook for the towel. Curtains fine and blinds broken. The windows were really very dirty. Light by the beds coming loose and covered in dust. Weird bug in the bathroom and spiders. Extension lead and cables dangling.

The olde world idea

The place needs upgrading.
It was very unclean. Thick dust was everywhere throughout the hotel. There were marks in our bedroom on the walls of god knows what they were.
Staff were rude and unwelcoming.
The bar was a mess and the barman was scruffy and rude. He didn't know what amaretto was. When I showed him the bottle I wanted he pulled out an Aldi branded one from the back and tried to give me this instead of Disarrano.

Nobody at reception to check you in or out. We left at 7:30am there was nobody in the hotel to check you out.

The bed was uncomfortable and the quilts were damp

The TV reception was patchy in the top room that we stayed in but thankfully that's not what we were there for

There was an extra charge of £20 for our small dog for one night which was not mentioned on the booking
No reception staff, had to wait until someone appeared. No code issued for getting back into the building after 11pm. Would not recommend breakfast
