We had a fantastic visit to Alnmouth, the Schooner Inn was perfect.
Pros:

The Schooner Hotel is perfectly located, a few minutes’ walk to the beach. A 17th century building with an interesting history and refurbished restaurant (Indian & standard English food like fish & chips). We are a family of 4, travelling by train with our bikes. Very close to all local cafes, shops, & restaurants. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay here!

Cons:

There is a bike rack to lock bikes safely outside within the secured grounds, but it is uncovered, so our bikes were rained on.

Pros:

We visited the hotel several years ago and had a lovely time, though it was a little shabby. They have clearly put a lot of work into renovating since we were there last. The room was clean; no problems with the shower or TV.

There were plenty of towels, clean bedding and very friendly staff. We ate there one night, and the steak and burger were lovely!

Cons:

It would have been helpful to have more than one toilet roll in the room and a set of toiletries for each guest, rather than one between the two of us.

Pros:

Great location
Friendly staff who made a great effort with our child
Indian food good
Good views from beer garden
It’s clear that there is a lot of effort going into redecorating and improving the facilities

Absolutely terrible
Pros:

There wasn’t an aspect I liked about staying here

Cons:

The whole experience, the room smelt of rotting drains and flies everywhere, the floor was wet and dirty, the beds were dirty, the window wouldn’t lock and was on the ground floor so anyone could’ve gotten in from the street, there was no one at reception when we arrived or when we left. It was very noisy being on the ground floor from inside the hotel and outside. We didn’t unpack anything and binned our clothes and PJs from the stay. Absolutely the worst experience ever.

Cons:

I would not advise anybody to stay at the hotel until it is vastly improved
Cons:

The curtains were broken and partially missing, the wash hand basin pop-up waste did not work properly, the shower waste was partially blocked, the hand towels were dirty, the bathroom door latch was missing, the decorations were tired and generally the communal corridors and staircases were dirty. The breakfast was reasonable for two out of the four days but one of the days was a complete disaster and the toast came partially buttered, which seemed to indicate it hand been used by other guests.

Distinctly average
Pros:

Check-in OK, staff on hand

Cons:

First room we were offered had a broken TV, poor level of cleanliness and odd smell; we were moved into a better room but toilet flush faulty. Overall, the hotel badly needs overhaul of fixtures and fittings and a deep clean.

Wouldn’t recommend anyone to stay here
Pros:

Not a great deal to like 👎

Cons:

Staff were untrained mostly couldn’t speak English. I had to ask every day for my room to be made up and refresh towels. Breakfast arrived cold on the plate. When I brought these issues up with the manager all he wanted to do was argue with me as if I was at fault, his comment was “what do you expect for this price?”
Not a happy experience.

Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in
Pros:

The location was good. Bathroom had recently been refurbished (but badly).

Cons:

The room smells of chip pan fat. The view from the window was a stone wall 2 feet away. The bed was uncomfortable. Dead flies in the bathroom. The Carpet on the stairs looked about 100 years old. No parking available. The door to the room didn’t lock properly so we felt unsafe and we were locked out of the bathroom because the door locked itself when we closed it. I also saw an apparition/ghost in the room.

Pros:

The building is old, and the hospitality combines rural English traditions with modern casualness. Don't expect luxury, but we received a full service for the price: delicious breakfast, dinner, clean towels, hairdryer, luggage storage, comfortable bed, very close to the sea, and the bus stop is easily accessible on foot with luggage. The staff was exceptionally kind.

If all you need is a place to crash it’ll do
Pros:

Great location
Towels and bedding were clean

Cons:

The shower didn’t drain and when it did it managed to flood bathroom floor from underneath the cubicle, couldn’t close the window or adjust the blinds, there was a damp smell in corridors, old and tired in appearance and not even cheap and cheerful
