Everything! We were staying at the hotel, sadly for my brothers funeral. We had a 4 hour journey and it was bank holiday. I was concerned how late it would be when we arrived. I'd emailed the day before to mention this and had a lovely reply not to worry. When we finally arrived we received a lovely warm welcome and our rooms had been upgraded. Just what we needed when we tired and sad. The rooms were lovely, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. We explained that we would miss breakfast as we needed a very early start. This wasn't a problem and breakfast was served to us 30 mins early. The dining room is gorgeous! Traditional standards, white linen and white tableware. The staff are so friendly. We really needed that kindness on a sad day. I want to stay there again for longer in happier times. We didn't have time to look around the gardens but there was lots of seating and it was very pretty.
Nothing
Beautiful building and surroundings in an ideal location.
The property was beautiful but the only minor downside was that the shower was difficult to regulate.
The young staff were very professional and courteous. They couldn’t do enough for you.
The breakfast was exceptional we didn’t eat anything else till the evening.
Very centrally located.
The decoration is rather 70s style.
But we warmed to it and brought back lots of happy memories of family holidays in the past.
Larger room, comfortable bed, scrupulously clean, fantastic staff who were kind, helpful and friendly, great location, pretty gardens, free parking. There is a bar service which is expensive (just over £20 for 2 G&Ts served with ice but no lemon). Would stay again although it's more of a very pretty B&B than a hotel.
Room (17) on the top floor, directly above kitchens at the side of the hotel. Bathroom in particular smelled of fat and cooking smells which was deeply unpleasant - there appears to be no professional venting to the kitchen which is good because no fan noise, but bad because smells permeate the fabric of the building in that area. Couldn't open the windows to clear smell because of kitchen below. Tip: Keep the bathroom door closed at all times. No bar, no room service, no snacks available between breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is served from a menu and was oddly bland, not particularly generous - only one egg even if that's all you ordered; One poached egg, one boiled egg etc., Porridge was freezing cold on one morning - just out of the fridge. Lack of cooking smells in the morning leads me to believe breakfast is cooked in advance and heated up which in addition to lack of professional venting, also explains the blandness of the cooked breakfast which was a bit weird. Nowhere to sit with friends indoors in the late evening to have a chat or nightcap before bed - everything locked up by 10pm including the lounge - I get fire regs but still .. Hotel prices for B&B service.
Great location
Great location, only about 10 minutes from Sidmouth town centre. Pleasant grounds, nice bedroom and comfy bed.
Please replace the vintage carpets. The smell downstairs on arrival is akin to an older persons care home. At least our room didn’t replicate that.
I know Sidmouth is a very attractive and rightly popular destination, but I felt the price was just the wrong side of being not great value for money for the size of room.
There was a temporary chef which must have created challenges, but to be unable to prepare gooey poached eggs on toast as requested was a bit disappointing. To be fair, when we laboured the point on the second time, the eggs were perfect.
The hotel is very nice and well located. The staff is always very professional and kind, and exceeded our expectations.
Shame there was no bar
Beautiful property within a small walk to the sea front of Sidmouth. Set in a lovely part of the town. Extremely clean with helpful and obliging staff. Good parking. Room was decorated beautifully and very nice shower.
The walls are way too thin and you can hear the people and Tvs in the rooms to the sides of you. We had a problem with person in the room next door to us with his rude manner and loud tv. Of course this is not the hotels fault but the tvs are placed on the walls that back on to the place someone is sleeping. A note in rooms to be respectful about volume wouldn't go a miss. Would personally prefer a buffet style breakfast where you help yourself to the continental items before a cooked breakfast is served. Didn't like having to order cereals etc. We also really didn't like late breakfast being only open from 8.15 -9.15. Limiting time when you are awake earlier and want to eat. There was a morning I was awake an hour and a half earlier than this time and I went for a walk because breakfast wasn't available yet. Wouldn't suit business persons who need to have an early breakfast and go.
I also wasn't keen on everyone in the dining room for breakfast at the same time. Dinner service also 6.30- 7.15. Very restricted time wise and have never witnessed a dinner time like this. Didn't suit so we didn't bother to have.
Quiet location but just a short walk into town. Breakfast and dinner both good. Excellent service.
We would have preferred a garden view from our room with its king size bed.
All aspects of our stay were excellent.
Would have liked a small bar
A lovely hotel , beautiful gardens and perfect location . Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice . Rooms were spotlessly clean and very comfy . Staff were very attentive.
Welcoming and functional
During heat wave, Could have a fan in the room
