My recent stay at Holiday Inn turned out to be one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have had in a very long time. What made it even more frustrating was that this was not a minor inconvenience or an isolated issue — the problems were consistent across housekeeping, maintenance, service standards, hygiene, and overall management responsiveness.
At the outset, I was upgraded to a suite, which initially appeared to be a positive gesture by the hotel. Unfortunately, the experience that followed completely overshadowed any goodwill created by the upgrade. From the moment I approached the room, it became clear that the operational standards at the property were far below what one would reasonably expect from an international hospitality brand.
The corridor leading to the room itself was in an appalling condition. Multiple food trays and used crockery had been left outside rooms for an extended period of time and had clearly not been cleared for hours. The entire passage had an unpleasant and stale smell because of this. What was shocking was not just the presence of the trays, but the complete lack of urgency shown despite repeated complaints. I called housekeeping and the front desk multiple times and even personally met Mr. Tony, the Duty Manager, to highlight the issue. However, even after waiting for nearly 3–4 hours, nothing had been done. The trays continued to remain in the corridor, the smell persisted, and there appeared to be absolutely no supervision or follow-up on the complaint. It was only later in the night, after escalating the matter yet again to another Duty Manager, that the trays were finally removed. By then, the inconvenience and frustration had already set the tone for the stay.
Unfortunately, things only got worse upon entering the suite. The room felt extremely old, poorly maintained, and neglected. The sofas had visible stains and looked unhygienic, the walls were shabby and marked, and the overall upkeep of the room was nowhere close to what one expects from a reputed hotel chain. Rather than feeling comfortable or premium, the suite gave the impression of a room that had not been properly renovated or maintained for years. Cleanliness standards also appeared questionable, which made the stay even more uncomfortable.
Another major issue throughout the stay was the quality and speed of service. Almost every request seemed to take an unreasonable amount of time. Whether it was housekeeping, assistance, or general guest support, there was a clear lack of coordination and responsiveness from the staff. Delays may happen occasionally in busy hotels, but here it felt like inefficiency had become the norm. There was very little sense of ownership or urgency from the operational teams, and the guest experience seemed to be the last priority.
The breakfast experience the following morning was equally disappointing. While Mr. Munshi approached the table with good intentions to inquire whether everything was fine and to wish guests well, the overall presentation and hygiene standards were frankly disturbing. Seeing a guest-facing staff member in a visibly dirty and foul-smelling shirt was extremely off-putting, especially in a food and beverage environment where cleanliness and grooming are basic expectations. Hospitality is not just about polite words — presentation, hygiene, and professionalism matter equally, if not more. Unfortunately, this reflected another serious lapse in supervision and operational standards at the hotel.
To be fair, not every interaction during the stay was negative. I would specifically like to acknowledge Mr. Sayan at the café, who was courteous, helpful, and professional throughout. He was one of the very few staff members who genuinely appeared interested in assisting guests and maintaining service standards. His attitude and conduct stood out positively amidst an otherwise poor experience and deserve appreciation.
However, one positive staff interaction cannot compensate for the overall condition of the property and the repeated failures across departments. What was most disappointing was that many of these issues were not extraordinary problems — they were basic hospitality fundamentals. Timely clearance of trays, maintaining clean corridors, ensuring rooms are properly maintained, responding promptly to guest complaints, and ensuring staff grooming standards are upheld are not premium expectations; they are the bare minimum for any hotel, especially one operating under the Holiday Inn brand.
The stay ultimately felt like a property suffering from poor supervision, weak operational control, and a complete lack of attention to guest experience. There seemed to be a disconnect between management and execution, with complaints either not being taken seriously or not being followed through effectively. For guests paying premium room rates and expecting a comfortable stay, this level of service and maintenance is simply unacceptable.
Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience and certainly not reflective of the standards associated with the Holiday Inn brand. The property urgently needs improvements in housekeeping efficiency, room maintenance, staff grooming, service responsiveness, and overall management accountability. I genuinely hope the management takes these concerns seriously and works towards improving the guest experience because, in its current state, the hotel falls significantly short of expected hospitality standards.
Everything was very good. The breakfast had different cuisine options and we were from south india, and we felt very comfortable with the south indian food offered. The staffs attended us with the dishes available in the live counters too.
The taste of other food items could've been a little better. It was great but could've been better.
I booked due to proximity to the airport. But it was a mistake. It is not like other Holiday Inns I've stayed in. My Bangalore Holiday Inn stay was good. So I booked this one. Poorly cleaned and poorly maintained rooms with cockroaches. there is lack of staff in restaurant. 50% of the staff is good. remaining 50% dont even acknowledge what you said.
Staff were helpful and the rooms were quiet
Proximity to the airport
The facility has not seen cleaning for a while by the looks of it. The bed linens were torn, so were the towels
Staff was good.
Cleanliness was below average. In King suit there was just one tea cup and no spoon/stirrer !!! Sofa and bed sheets had dirty stains. Water pressure was too low. Loud noises from adjoining room till 1.00 am !!! Restaurant had strong smell of non-vegetarian food.
Great stay at Holiday Inn Kolkata Airport.
The service was excellent and the breakfast was fantastic with a wide variety of options. We will comeback again. Thankyou
Café da manhã e funcionários super simpáticos
