Quartz to the Rescue!!
Pros:

Incredible experience for my wedding weekend. Quartz the manager was aware that I was getting married and recognized that I wanted it to be extra special. Quartz did everything possible to ensure this, and during my 3 day stay consistently went the extra mile. However, I would avoid booking a cabana, especially if they try puting you in Cabana #8. We made our reservation 2 months in advance and we showed up and the Pool Manager (Terrell) tried putting us in another cabana that was absolutely terrible. It was right by the front desk entrance/exit. There were stains on the pool cushions, zero privacy and there were pool chemicals visible on the other side of the cabana wall. Once I explained that we would be staying in Cabana #3 which we had received an email confirmation, the pool manager explained that it had been double booked. I dug in my heals in a polite, civil way and explained that I wanted my original cabana. The pool manager then walked us over to Cabana #3 and had us sit with the other party that also had a reservation for Cabana #3. It was super akward sitting there with the other party. We just sat there for 20-30 minutes waiting for some kind of communication from Terrell. That never happened. Instead he just stood in the distance frozen with terror. Eventaully one of the more experienced servers (Jenny-Total Rock Star) came to my wife and I explained the situation and what she thought might be some possible options. Our conversation was civil and friendly. We were moved to a daybed and were treated to dinner which was a nice touch. Why did that happen? It happened because Quartz came up to the pool to talk to us and come up with solutions. What was super fascinating was that Terrell the Pool Manager walked up with Quartz and then walked away. This was an opportunity to learn and Terrell just wasn't interested in us. Throughout the day he walked by us. I counted 5 times, and not once did he check in us. Simply shocking. We had dinner at Lion Fish that night and got the VIP treatment. Sam the Manager made our night feel very special. We had a great table with a great server (Michael). The food was AMAZING! Speaking of food. In the 3 days we stayed there, we ate at all of the restaraunts; the only thing we didn't do was room service. The quality and consistency of the food was 10/10 every expereince. Each time I went to breakfast, I got something different....And each time it was just great!! I live in San Diego and will definitely go back to any of the restaraunts on property. Finally, need to mention Cristina the Conceriege. She also played a pivotal role in making my wedding weekend extremely special. She also saw us at breakfast the morning after our wedding night and walked up to congratulate us; such a classy touch! All in all, I would highly recommend The Pendry and look forward to staying at this property in other cities. Pendry represents class, style and quality....Just avoid reserving a pool cabana.

Great Stay, kind and helpful staff, clean rooms and scary hidden fees after checkout
Pros:

Went here with my wife for one night. It was a charming experience at check in. The front desk was excited to greet us and informed us of all our benefits due to booking through our Amex credit card.

Hotel room and amenities around hotel were clean and charming. However , on top of “paying in full” we were charged a $47 amenity fee, and several smaller charges. This was annoying to see but understandable at a downtown luxury hotel, and I’m sure the Amex travel benefits have more of a catch than meets the eye.
We were also charged for moving items around on the mini bar, which had sensors . This was my first time experiencing that. We contacted the front desk and they removed the charge immediately, which was accommodating.

However, listed on the mini bar paper menu was the JBL speaker for $250… little odd to include that on the mini bar menu, but we assumed the charge was applicable if the speaker was taken by the guest. After seeing the charges on the mini bar menu , we obviously did not consume a single item from the hotel room mini honor bar or take the JBL speaker.

The disconcerting piece was that a few days after our stay, I saw a $250 charge on my credit card, which was not on the initial invoice we received upon checkout.

I reached out via email with this concern and the front desk responded promptly. They said the charge was for a missing speaker and that they would update the folio/invoice. They said it was missing and there was no evidence of anyone taking it and had to assume we had taken it or “packed it by mistake”

Frankly, this concept of billing seems insane and predatory. We did not take the speaker. The front desk says if we return it , they will refund us.
It’s almost as if with the JBL listed as a menu item, they are expecting to go through with the charge. I didn’t take a speaker from a hotel, and there’s no way to prove I didn’t. This seems like an impossible situation to rectify.

Not Worth the Price — Unexpected Fees and Poor Food
Pros:

My stay at Pendry San Diego was extremely disappointing and, honestly, one of the most stressful hotel experiences I’ve had. I travel frequently around the world, and this is the first time I’ve felt misled by a hotel.

I booked using my AmEx Platinum benefits, expecting a certain standard of service and transparency, but that was not the case.

1. I was charged twice upon arrival—approximately $250 and nearly $600. The hotel explained one was a security deposit and the other was to “settle the second night,” which felt unclear and excessive.

2. We were told the AmEx credit could only be used on the first day. Fine—but when we ordered room service lunch, there was a 20% surcharge plus an additional delivery fee to the room. Be sure to read the fine print carefully.

3. The food quality was very poor. We ordered a wagyu burger, prosciutto pizza, and margherita pasta. Everything arrived cold. The pasta, in particular, was disappointing—overcooked, soggy, and tasted like canned tomato sauce. For the price point (in the $20+ range), it was not worth it. We both felt sick after eating.

4. After questioning the charges, the front desk assured us that one of them would be refunded. However, the charges still went through, and we were effectively billed twice for the room. The final receipt also included additional unclear charges I’ve never encountered before.

5. Despite booking with AmEx Platinum benefits, we were not offered any room upgrade.

6. The “welcome gift” consisted of two chocolates, which felt underwhelming and did not match expectations.

Overall, this stay felt disorganized, overpriced, and lacking transparency. I would strongly recommend double-checking all charges and understanding the fine print before booking or ordering anything at this hotel.

Impeccable Hospitality
Pros:

This review is long overdue. The Pendry hotel is chic, sleek, pristine clean and what truly made our trip a family friendly one was the hotel’s welcoming and dedicated staff. We were celebrating my child’s birthday and requested a cake to be made for her ahead of our visit and inquired about out of the ordinary kid activities in the area. The concierge gave me great recommendations and an order request for a cake. He must have kindly alerted the staff and upon our arrival my kids were greeted with stuffies and birthday balloons! The reason for the 5 stars besides the obvious; The Pendry anticipated our needs and went above and beyond our expectations while making us feel valued.

Exceptional Stay – Perfect for the Ed Sheeran Concert!
Pros:

My family and I recently stayed in a City Queen Queen room at the Pendry San Diego, and we could not have been happier with our experience. The room itself was very comfortable, though the design of the shower—with a curtain on the outside for privacy—was definitely... different! We originally chose this hotel because of its incredibly convenient location close to Petco Park for the Ed Sheeran concert, which made our evening totally stress-free.

We booked our stay through the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program and really enjoyed leveraging all the included benefits, such as the $60 credit towards breakfast, the $100 property credit, and the late check-out. The hotel amenities were great across the board, and the bathroom products were absolutely amazing. We found the Provisional restaurant to be super convenient for our breakfast—the aioli potatoes and breakfast parfait were definite highlights!

A special shoutout to the housekeeping staff, who were exceptional and thorough throughout our stay. I also want to give major praise to Cathy in Concierge. She was very helpful and truly went above and beyond to accommodate our requests, specifically by helping us arrange transportation and proactively providing a solution for our parking at Westfield Mall.

I highly recommend this venue for everyone, including families and couples!

What a great Hotel !!
Pros:

I stayed at Pendry for five nights while attending an intense work conference. I didn't anticipate how lovely the hotel was going to be until after arrival, but it really was an amazing experience. The staff are abundant and friendly and professional.
The room and bed were incredibly comfortable, and I never heard another sound from adjoining rooms (which had me marveling at their sound proofing). I actually had the best night's sleep I've had in years TWICE the week I stayed.
The various bars on site were fun to explore, and the fitness center is top notch.
I'd be shocked if someone had a lousy time while staying at Pendry, as that doesn't seem possible.

Beautiful property, but the service and hospitality no longer reflected the luxury experience we remembered.
Pros:

The Pendry is a beautiful property in an excellent location. The rooms are well appointed, the atmosphere is upscale, and our first stay three years ago on our wedding night was exceptional. That experience is what made us so excited to return and celebrate another special occasion.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this visit was nothing like our first. For over a month before our stay, we tried to reserve a cabana, but our messages to the pool manager were read and never answered. Once we arrived, we asked if someone could help us set up a couple of pool chairs and were told there were no clean white towels, so we were handed a stack of towels to do it ourselves. The pool manager later said he would check on our request and “be right back,” but never returned. We eventually had to find him ourselves, only to be told, “Hold on, I’m busy.”

We ultimately rented a cabana, but it was underwhelming. The furniture was extremely uncomfortable, the food didn’t reflect the premium prices, coffee wasn’t available at the pool, and we were told eggs weren’t available to add to avocado toast despite an egg sandwich being on the menu.

None of these issues alone would have ruined our stay. What stood out was that every interaction felt like “no.” There was no effort to accommodate, offer alternatives, or deliver the level of hospitality we experienced during our first visit. Three years ago, Pendry represented luxury boutique hospitality at its best. This visit felt like a completely different

Disappointing Decline in Service at a Once Exceptional Hotel
Pros:

We stayed at Pendry San Diego three years ago on our wedding night, and it was everything you would expect from a luxury boutique hotel. The service was exceptional, and it quickly became one of our favorite hotels, so we were excited to return to celebrate another special occasion.

Unfortunately, this visit was a completely different experience.

For over a month before our stay, we tried to reserve a cabana through the pool manager, but our messages were read and never answered. When we arrived, we asked if he was available to speak with us and were told he was busy, which was completely understandable. We then asked if someone could simply help us set up a couple of pool chairs, but were told they didn’t have any clean white towels and were handed a stack of towels to do it ourselves. Later, the pool manager told us he would check on our request and “be right back.” He never returned. We eventually had to find him ourselves, only for him to look at us and say, “Hold on, I’m busy.”

We ultimately rented a cabana, but even that was disappointing. The furniture felt like you were sitting on bricks, and the food didn’t reflect the prices being charged. The $26 egg sandwich was simply two slices of white bread with a fried egg and a drizzle of sauce. We asked if we could order a coffee at the pool and were told they didn’t have coffee. We asked if an egg could be added to the avocado toast and were told, “Sorry, we don’t have eggs available,” despite an egg sandwich being on the menu.

None of these things, by themselves, are major issues. What stood out was that every interaction felt like “no.” There was no effort to accommodate, no alternative offered, and no sense of hospitality. Luxury hotels aren’t defined by perfection. They’re defined by how they take care of their guests.

Three years ago, Pendry represented luxury boutique hospitality and service that went above and beyond. This visit felt like a completely different hotel.

Stay at The Pendry!
Pros:

The Pendry Hotel is a lovely, five star hotel located in a perfect part of the Gas Lamp quarter in downtown San Diego. The hotel is inviting; the decor is chic without being intimidating, the staff is friendly, and the food and beverage at each restaurant is very good. The fitness center, spa, and rooftop pool are bonus amenities. I would recommend The Pendry to couples and families on vacation as well as business persons.
