Another great stay at a pendry
Pros:

Pendry hotels never fail to impress. Great boutique in a great location near downtown san diego. Great rooms in tip-top shape, awesome pool deck and restaurant, good gym and good service.

Impeccable Hospitality
Pros:

This review is long overdue. The Pendry hotel is chic, sleek, pristine clean and what truly made our trip a family friendly one was the hotel’s welcoming and dedicated staff. We were celebrating my child’s birthday and requested a cake to be made for her ahead of our visit and inquired about out of the ordinary kid activities in the area. The concierge gave me great recommendations and an order request for a cake. He must have kindly alerted the staff and upon our arrival my kids were greeted with stuffies and birthday balloons! The reason for the 5 stars besides the obvious; The Pendry anticipated our needs and went above and beyond our expectations while making us feel valued.

Exceptional Stay – Perfect for the Ed Sheeran Concert!
Pros:

My family and I recently stayed in a City Queen Queen room at the Pendry San Diego, and we could not have been happier with our experience. The room itself was very comfortable, though the design of the shower—with a curtain on the outside for privacy—was definitely... different! We originally chose this hotel because of its incredibly convenient location close to Petco Park for the Ed Sheeran concert, which made our evening totally stress-free.

We booked our stay through the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program and really enjoyed leveraging all the included benefits, such as the $60 credit towards breakfast, the $100 property credit, and the late check-out. The hotel amenities were great across the board, and the bathroom products were absolutely amazing. We found the Provisional restaurant to be super convenient for our breakfast—the aioli potatoes and breakfast parfait were definite highlights!

A special shoutout to the housekeeping staff, who were exceptional and thorough throughout our stay. I also want to give major praise to Cathy in Concierge. She was very helpful and truly went above and beyond to accommodate our requests, specifically by helping us arrange transportation and proactively providing a solution for our parking at Westfield Mall.

I highly recommend this venue for everyone, including families and couples!

What a great Hotel !!
Pros:

I stayed at Pendry for five nights while attending an intense work conference. I didn't anticipate how lovely the hotel was going to be until after arrival, but it really was an amazing experience. The staff are abundant and friendly and professional.
The room and bed were incredibly comfortable, and I never heard another sound from adjoining rooms (which had me marveling at their sound proofing). I actually had the best night's sleep I've had in years TWICE the week I stayed.
The various bars on site were fun to explore, and the fitness center is top notch.
I'd be shocked if someone had a lousy time while staying at Pendry, as that doesn't seem possible.

Beautiful property, but the service and hospitality no longer reflected the luxury experience we remembered.
Pros:

The Pendry is a beautiful property in an excellent location. The rooms are well appointed, the atmosphere is upscale, and our first stay three years ago on our wedding night was exceptional. That experience is what made us so excited to return and celebrate another special occasion.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this visit was nothing like our first. For over a month before our stay, we tried to reserve a cabana, but our messages to the pool manager were read and never answered. Once we arrived, we asked if someone could help us set up a couple of pool chairs and were told there were no clean white towels, so we were handed a stack of towels to do it ourselves. The pool manager later said he would check on our request and “be right back,” but never returned. We eventually had to find him ourselves, only to be told, “Hold on, I’m busy.”

We ultimately rented a cabana, but it was underwhelming. The furniture was extremely uncomfortable, the food didn’t reflect the premium prices, coffee wasn’t available at the pool, and we were told eggs weren’t available to add to avocado toast despite an egg sandwich being on the menu.

None of these issues alone would have ruined our stay. What stood out was that every interaction felt like “no.” There was no effort to accommodate, offer alternatives, or deliver the level of hospitality we experienced during our first visit. Three years ago, Pendry represented luxury boutique hospitality at its best. This visit felt like a completely different

Disappointing Decline in Service at a Once Exceptional Hotel
Pros:

We stayed at Pendry San Diego three years ago on our wedding night, and it was everything you would expect from a luxury boutique hotel. The service was exceptional, and it quickly became one of our favorite hotels, so we were excited to return to celebrate another special occasion.

Unfortunately, this visit was a completely different experience.

For over a month before our stay, we tried to reserve a cabana through the pool manager, but our messages were read and never answered. When we arrived, we asked if he was available to speak with us and were told he was busy, which was completely understandable. We then asked if someone could simply help us set up a couple of pool chairs, but were told they didn’t have any clean white towels and were handed a stack of towels to do it ourselves. Later, the pool manager told us he would check on our request and “be right back.” He never returned. We eventually had to find him ourselves, only for him to look at us and say, “Hold on, I’m busy.”

We ultimately rented a cabana, but even that was disappointing. The furniture felt like you were sitting on bricks, and the food didn’t reflect the prices being charged. The $26 egg sandwich was simply two slices of white bread with a fried egg and a drizzle of sauce. We asked if we could order a coffee at the pool and were told they didn’t have coffee. We asked if an egg could be added to the avocado toast and were told, “Sorry, we don’t have eggs available,” despite an egg sandwich being on the menu.

None of these things, by themselves, are major issues. What stood out was that every interaction felt like “no.” There was no effort to accommodate, no alternative offered, and no sense of hospitality. Luxury hotels aren’t defined by perfection. They’re defined by how they take care of their guests.

Three years ago, Pendry represented luxury boutique hospitality and service that went above and beyond. This visit felt like a completely different hotel.

Stay at The Pendry!
Pros:

The Pendry Hotel is a lovely, five star hotel located in a perfect part of the Gas Lamp quarter in downtown San Diego. The hotel is inviting; the decor is chic without being intimidating, the staff is friendly, and the food and beverage at each restaurant is very good. The fitness center, spa, and rooftop pool are bonus amenities. I would recommend The Pendry to couples and families on vacation as well as business persons.

Nice Hotel
Pros:

Our stay was very nice. Good service and excellent housekeeping. Nice hotel overall. We had 2 bumps in the road that had me knock off a star. The pool was very crowded when we went around 2pm on a Friday. Although I saw attendants, there was no help in showing what was available or helping anyone to find a chair. You are completely on your own. Also, I had to get up and go to the bar to get a drink as well. Someone did check on us later, after I already had my drink. If I were to go to San Diego again and wanted to use the pool, I’d pick a different hotel. It’s just not well attended by the staff. If I was not planning on using the pool, I would stay here again. The other bump was the morning of check out - we kept getting calls to our room when no one was on the other line. Have no idea why. Texted the help number provided to see what was going on but no one responded. The first call woke us up. So nice hotel but a few more issues than I expected due to the price.

VCP at The Pendry
Pros:

Great location in the Gaslamp District only a few blocks away from the convention center, ballpark, and Coronado Island ferry. There’s literally bars, restaurants, ice cream shops, convenience stores, and breakfast spots within just 25 feet of the front door of The Pendry. Traffic isn’t horrible and it’s easy to drive and navigate to and from and Ubers have good and easy access.

They have a great foyer with a warm fireplace and very trendy leather skirt couches. Hotel staff is posted up everywhere including outside on the corner making your approach, entry, and exit of the hotel feel elevated and secure.

The rooms are nicely appointed and fresh and clean giving an elevated and sexy vibe. The room has a good BT speaker which is a nice touch. HVAC works great to keep room very cool. Waterfall shower head in the all glass standup shower (more than big enough for two) next to the master bed is also very fun and sexy.

Beautiful Rooms, But the Hotel Shows Its Age
Pros:

I recently stayed at the Pendry San Diego, a property widely considered a 5‑star hotel. While there are certainly bright spots, my overall experience landed at a solid four stars.

The guest rooms are beautifully redecorated — modern, comfortable, and thoughtfully styled. However, the bathroom design felt more cramped than expected for a luxury property. A single sink with very limited counter space made daily routines surprisingly inconvenient.

What stood out most was the contrast between the refreshed rooms and the rest of the hotel. The hallways — I visited three different floors — appear unchanged from decades ago. They’re dated, worn, and in clear need of renovation. It creates an odd disconnect: the inside of the room says “welcome,” while the hallway says “we stopped updating in the 1980s.”

Service was mixed. The front desk staff were kind and helpful. The manager on duty, Quartz, was accommodating but didn’t quite convey the warmth or hospitality you expect at a 5‑star property. The mask she wore (not an N95) also made communication feel a bit impersonal.

In the end, the Pendry offers comfortable accommodations and a beautifully refreshed room experience, but the aging infrastructure and uneven service kept it from reaching true 5‑star execution. I vacillated between three and four stars and ultimately chose four for the quality of the room, some friendly staff and the jacuzzi/hot tub that was next to the pool (always a bonus).

Weekend Getaway
Pros:

This hotel is conveniently located in the Gaslamp district. You can pretty much walk everywhere. The staff is attentive and friendly. Numerous restaurant choices and bars at the hotel and within walking distance. Great pool area on the 3rd floor, but you will be disappointed in the view, as you will stare at an apartment building. However, it has a good vibe, food and service. The rooms are nice, but small.
