Central
My staff member stayed for work for 4 nights. The room was dirty, towels and sheets stained, tiles were mouldy and dirty. The hotel advertises a restaurant but doesn’t have one. Overall really horrid stay. Left a day early. Locals they spoke to said it was known to be a very poor hotel. Expensive.
It is what it is, a simple hotel from the 60s/70s that's remained the same, the pictures do the hotel justice, and the staff are nice. I quite liked the fabric of the bedding, which was a nice touch.
The wifi simply does not work, and the mesh system set up is incorrectly set up, however, you're in Shetland, it doesnt really work anywhere.
Very central location for shops and harbour. Very helpful staff and excellent, enormous breakfast. Plenty of public free parking at the back of the hotel. Comfortable bed. So warm we switched the heaters off.
Hotel did evening meals but unfortunately not on the night we stayed
Grand by name, but sadly seen its best days gone by. Obviously the owner has/had not enough money to maintain everything to keep it up to it's name. Rather old fashioned, dated and run down in parts. We found it fine for one night.
Pleasant staff, very convenient location, and a splendid breakfast room.
The hotel is in urgent need of a costly comprehensive refurbishment in order to bring up to the expected standard.
Breakfast was excellent & all the staff were too
Location spot on
Clean and quiet, great staff, excellent breakfast, though the hotel would benefit from some modernisation
Getting tired in places, no evening meals, rooms a little cramped
Staff eccezionale posizione centralissima
Lenzuola sporche struttura fatiscente
By coincidence I spent three nights here for a work trip. I travel a lot for my job, being in hotels all over the world. This wasn't luxurious, there was no gym, no spa, no airco etc..But there was an authencity in this place you hardly ever meet anymore in these sterile surgical hotels. For me it was one of my best stays ever, being sucked back in a time I remember from childhood when things were just more simple. The fact that locals pull in to have a few pints at the bar, makes you blend in a little with the culture. Owners and staff are friendly and hospitable above and beyond the call of duty. When they heard I needed to check out before breakfast hours, two egg and bacon sandwiches were freshly prepared for me at 5.30am to take with me, so I had something to eat ( and damn they were good sandwiches!!!!). Ow and btw, the bed was really comfortable.
Good location, reasonable breakfast. Crazy nighttime bar experience.
Didn't like all the stairs
Stayed for 2 nights in a single room. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. If you want a modern hotel this is not for you - but if you value character, history, a perfect location and most importantly a very friendly welcome then you will get all of these things here. Shout out to Harvey and Peter and the rest of the team who made our stay such a good one. I would definitely stay here again if I return to Shetland.
Staff were like family
The stairs
the hospitality. the room was clean. the staff were friendly and accomodating. the breakfasts were excellent and the choices were wide
finding the car park
This hotel is in an excellent location. Opening in late 1800’s it was likely more ‘Grand’ in its day - however the dated decor gives the hotel a quirky feel. Rooms were exceptionally clean, bedding and mattresses new. Towels a great quality and working towel rail.
The staff are dedicated to making you feel welcome - Harvey excellent on check in, Peter behind the bar and the chef at breakfast.
I don’t have a cooked breakfast and it was lovely to have a wide selection of cereals, fresh fruit and vast selection of fruit juices.
Constantly making improvements.
Free parking behind the hotel.
Bar open late, with great selection of drinks.
The staff and owner/manager were tielessly helpful.
Nothing. It was fine.
The location was excellent. We wanted to stay close to the Bressay ferry. The view was right across the water which was lovely. The bed was comfortable, the tea and coffee was good. There was plenty of space in the room. The landlord was very accommodating and helpful, allowing us a late checkout in order to be able to do the Bressay Parkrun. The breakfast was lovely.
The hotel was a little rundown. The windows were not double glazed and had condensation in the morning.
We didn't mind but there were lots of stairs.
