APA hotels are normally pretty standard and this was no different. Clean room with enough room for bare essentials. Nice sizable bath.
I normally enjoy my stays at APA. They're common and consistent so I use them reasonably often. However, this time around the lady at reception was extremely rude and impertinent.
I checked in using the electronic kiosk in English, so obviously I could read everything just fine. I am a resident in Japan so I am familiar with the check-in routine and can communicate in Japanese. After typing my Japanese address, I went to select my home prefecture. She told me I should select "I live overseas" and I replied that I didn't. She then physically reached across me and moved my hand out of the way to select this. I pushed her hand away and said that I live in Japan and that I can read English.
She then did the same thing when trying to change my booking from one person to two people. I was with my girlfriend at the time, but she was flying home later that evening. As a hotel less than 20 minutes from Haneda, I doubt this is an unusual occurrence.
I did not like this interaction at all. While it is common for travellers to be unfamiliar with Japanese hotel check-in, it is also not uncommon for foreign nationals to live in Japan. This lady made several assumptions about me and, upon being corrected in Japanese, decided that she would still force her incorrect opinion on me. I will not stay at this hotel again for this reason.
