Comfortable quiet stay at The Foundation.
Pros:

The decor and being able to see remnants of the old fire station. Love how Detroit is revitalizing old buildings into hotels and restaurant.

Underwhelming Experience
Pros:

My partner and I recently stayed at the Foundation Hotel while in town for a wedding, and unfortunately, our experience was underwhelming. We had been deciding between the Foundation and the Shinola Hotel and ultimately regretted our choice.

We booked a Deluxe King room through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts for approximately $500 per night. While there were some positives, they did not outweigh the numerous disappointments.

The Good:
The Apparatus Room on the main level is beautiful and has a great aesthetic.
The room itself was comfortable enough, and the bathroom was spacious and well-appointed.
The Le Labo bath products were a nice touch.

The Bad:
At check-in, we were told that no room upgrades were available, which we completely understood. However, the front desk attendant informed us that we would be able to receive a 4:00 PM late checkout. We planned our final day around that information.

On checkout day, we went out for breakfast and returned to find our room key no longer worked. When we spoke with the front desk, a supervisor informed us that they could not accommodate a late checkout after all and that the employee who had promised it was misinformed. This last-minute change forced us to alter our plans for the afternoon, including a museum visit we had intended to make before heading out of town.

Our room also overlooked a parking lot, and on multiple nights around 1:00 AM, loud music from cars in the lot woke us up. Additionally, one of the room's blinds was broken, preventing us from opening the curtain and letting natural light into the room.

Another surprise was the lack of complimentary bottled water in the room. When we called to ask about water, we were told we could either purchase the bottles in the minibar for $7 each or go down to the gym to fill up there. At this price point, complimentary water feels like a basic amenity.

The gym was also extremely limited. If your workout routine involves anything beyond cardio, you will likely be disappointed.

We chose to have lunch at the Apparatus Room upon arrival, but the front desk attendant neglected to mention that the restaurant was offering a happy hour menu at the time. Instead, we ordered from the regular menu, which we found both very limited and significantly overpriced for the quality and selection offered.

Overall, this stay fell well below expectations, especially considering the nightly rate. Between the inconsistent service, poor communication, lack of basic amenities, noise issues, and underwhelming facilities, we would not recommend staying at the Foundation Hotel. If you're considering hotels in downtown Detroit at this price point, we believe the Shinola Hotel is the better option.

A great place to spend the weekend whilst out and about in Detroit. I will definitely be back.
Pros:

Great location, architecturally very cool, interesting art and a great place to hang out. Love the heritage aspects of the building and how well they’ve been integrated into a stylish and modern hotel. The restaurant is great too.

Cons:

My room was facing the inside courtyard and was a little darker than expected

Would 100% come back
Pros:

Foundation hotel was a great stay, rooms were spacious between me and the fiance. Front desk and restaraunt staff was extremely kind and friendly. So friendly, that the front desk even called our room to tell us there was a silent disco on the 5th floor, thought that was pretty cool.

Cons:

Nothing bad to say.

A Detroit Experience Like No Other
Pros:

I have stayed at many boutique hotels, but Detroit Foundation Hotel stands in a category of its own. As a Detroit native now based in New York, coming home for Movement Festival and having this property as my anchor for the weekend was everything I could have asked for.

The building itself tells a story before you even check in. A former Fire Department Headquarters with soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and original architectural details — it is the kind of place that makes you stop and take it all in. It feels like Detroit. It honors Detroit. And in a city with as much history and pride as this one, that matters.

The location could not have been more perfect for Movement weekend. Steps from Hart Plaza, I was able to move between the festival and the hotel effortlessly throughout the entire weekend. Coming back to a cozy, dimly lit lobby with a restaurant right there to settle into made every return feel like an exhale. The rooms were spacious, spotless, and quiet — the hallways were peaceful even on the busiest nights of the festival, which I genuinely did not expect.

The amenities lean into music and creativity in a way that felt personal rather than performative. The vinyl brunch and the silent rave party on property were two of the best moments of my entire weekend. As a lifelong music lover, having those experiences waiting for me each time I returned from the festival was the perfect complement to Movement.

The staff made the stay complete. Sulaiman, the Director of Lifestyle, went above and beyond from day one — walking me through the property, keeping me informed of everything happening on site, and making sure I felt genuinely taken care of throughout. That level of thoughtfulness is rare. The front desk was equally exceptional — warm, consistent, and ready to help with whatever the day brought, including my French Bulldog, who was welcomed like a regular guest. Service was a 10 out of 10.

If you are a Detroiter, you owe it to yourself to stay here even for just one night. If you are visiting, there is no better place to experience what this city is truly about. I will be back.
