Service
9
Mixed but largely positive: several guests praise friendly, helpful staff and good breakfast service, though a few reports describe being ignored at check-in or encountering unhelpful individuals.
Location
10
Consistently highlighted as excellent — central, near attractions, short walks to town and RSC, with nearby parking; repeatedly described as a key reason to stay.

5.5
Many rooms reported as very hot with no air conditioning and limited airflow, some noisy/street-side rooms, and accessibility issues with steep, narrow or dirty stairs.

Basic in-room amenities (tea/coffee/biscuits, fans provided), parking nearby, and pet-friendly; lack of air-conditioning noted but compensated by fans and other conveniences.

9
Several guests describe good value and comfortable stays; isolated feedback mentions paying high price for a poor room, but overall value perception is positive.

Very good.
Pros:

Location was excellent right next to the river & town center. Rooms were clean and comfy. Staff were helpful & friendly. Ate in the Pen & Parchment we had fish & chips and they were very good. The stairs up to the rooms are a bit tricky for people with mobility problems but the annex is fine. Nice place to stay.

Cons:

The stairs.

Great location and friendly staff.
Pros:

Great location a stone's throw from the river and the centre of town. Lovely room with comfortable beds and spacious bathroom. Good choice of freshly cooked breakfast or continental breakfast. Easy check in and out.

Cons:

Room was too hot but there was nothing could be done about that, it isn't the fault of the hotel. Two fans were provided.

Lovely pub stay experience in a great location
Pros:

The inn was located above a pub and the experience was very unique. Great location, located next to the river and town centre. The rooms were very clean and felt newly built. The staff members were super friendly and helpful! Would definitely stay again.

Cons:

It’s less of a complain about the facility more of a travel timing thing. We stayed during an extreme heatwave, the deluxe room windows was only able to be opened a little making the room not very well ventilated even though outside is much cooler than the room. But they provided 2 fans in the room.

Cons:

It was extremely hot, not able to open window. Fans provided but didn't help much. It was a very uncomfortable night.

Great location but room too hot
Pros:

Lovely staff clean room very central location

Cons:

No air conditioning the room was stifling . They did have fans but just seemed to create more hot air . Had to leave a day early on our 2night trip as couldn’t face another night sweating in room

Holiday gem - recommend!
Pros:

I stayed for 3 nights and am so glad I chose Pen & Parchment. Every staff member was friendly and helpful (special shout out to RJ). My room was spacious, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The location was excellent, only a few minutes walk from everything, especially the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which was the main reason I was visiting. The cost was really good value considering what a busy time it was and how much surrounding places cost. This would be my top choice of where to stay if I'm back in the area.

Cons:

To get to my room in the main building, I had to go up a steep flight of stairs with an awkward door at the bottom, so it won't be accessible for everyone. The room got understandably hot in the heatwave; thankfully there were 2 fans that helped but I had to keep them on all the time I was there.

We were on holiday to visit family.
Pros:

Was a good location

Cons:

Getting to the room was quite unsafe. Stairs are really steep and narrow. And carrying luggage up was very scary.

Pros:

Lovely room, had everything we needed, was in a great location.

Cons:

Room was got quite hot, they did provide a fan tho which helped. The duvets were just a bit to heavy/thick for the weather we have atm.
