What a joy to stay in one of America's great architectural masterworks! So much history, so many stories. Airy beautiful public spaces, comfortable rooms, lots of nooks and crannies to explore, great museum downstairs which tells the history of the building and the patients it once housed. Moments away from the Albright-Knox Gallery and the Burchfield Penny, short drive from downtown. Highest recommendation!
A very unique hotel with a rich history, beautifully restored.

The history
Staff needs to inform about tours of the favility as soon as guests arrive so they do not miss on the only tour at 10am.
Remarkable place. Built by HH Richardson with landscaping by Olmsted. The three central buildings are restored as the hotel, and the remaining 10 buildings are still on the list to do - but the cost is just astronomical. Huge place. The hotel is just wonderful, as it gives you a feeling of the way they were trying to treat mental patients in the 1880's- lots of fresh air, beautiful views, communication and exercise. 16 foot tall ceilings, wide hallways, it has the air of a conference center, but the feel that you are there as a guest. The renovation was completed in 2017, but it has been tough with Covid, and they are doing well. Nice staff, excellent interpretive exhibit downstairs. Great walk around the grounds.
You should stay there and take in every interpretive exhibit you can. It is well worth while.
I loved how they kept the history alive.
Very cool history and old architecture!
Food was average. Chicken seemed it was frozen food, not fresh. The bar didn't have beer selection and why don't you have local brewery beers?⁸
The location was great.
It took a lot longer than it should have which staff explained so we understood the why.

Hotel itself was nice. Rooms were just OK no refrigerator in the room which I thought was weird.
Kind of out-of-the-way
This is not a casual hotel, it's a museum. You contribute to the fund to preserve an historical monument. As such, there are some concessions to be made, but overall, it's a great experience. Parking is free and great, location is unbeatable for the AKG. Rooms are tall, quiet, and confortable. My air conditioning worked well, but the fan was a bit noisy.
You live on a campus near a psychiatric hospital, which could make some people uneasy. There were ants in my room, but I left blueberries on the desk. Once the blueberries were removed, the ants were gone. I did see a falcon with its prey on top of a car in the parking lot, so there's that. No mini refrigerator in the room. The dining room is small, and breakfast is not included. Despite the limited choices, food was good.
