Hotel Capellán de Getsemaní

Booked this hotel via American Express Travel. Upon check in we were told that there is no upgrade available by the front desk and bell hop man. After some talking amongst themselves the female decided to call her manager that was off duty and didn’t return to work until days later. She said that her manager approved us for an upgrade but her co worker said he cannot show us that room. We asked why and he just shrugged us off. He then said he can show us a room but we wouldn’t like it because it’s a downgrade. We went to see that room anyway and it was indeed a much smaller room and a downgrade. Eventually we decided on staying in the first room they gave us and they said tomorrow after people check out that they might be able to move us to a jr suite or suite.

The next day the front desk informed us that they have a room ready and will move our things for us. When we got into the room we noticed immediately that it was very humid. The staff said that the room has ac issues and they already knew that and were trying to fix it. We decided to just make the best of our day because we didn’t have time to waste and left out for some lunch. We were assured that the issue would be handled by time we got back. When we we arrived back at the hotel they told us that there’s bad news and they can’t fix the ac. We decided to just head to the pool because that this point the stress was getting to us. When we got up to the pool I asked if they would be able to clean it because there was bugs and a lot of oil residue at the surface. No one came to clean it at all. So once again we were stuck making the best of what we thought would be the best hotel in Getsemaní.

After returning from dinner the front desk informed us once again that the room next door has working ac so they will give us the keys and we can move our things over. This is the 3rd time in less than 48 hrs we have moved in and out of rooms. It’s been such a huge inconvenience and the complete opposite of the relaxation and serenity this hotel advertised.

The next morning at breakfast we were approached by the “manager” and he said that he is sorry for the issues and can he offer us 2 mimosas and a late check out to make up for everything. We kindly informed him that we do not drink champagne and will be checking out and into another hotel after we are done eating. This has been a very disappointing start to what I thought was going to be an amazing birthday vacation.

There is one pro. The kitchen staff is very nice and so is the pool bartender.

The reception staff were fabulous very helpful especially when things went wrong
The bell man was great too they both spoke very good English and were extremely helpful
The pool was lovely to come back to after a tour with free sun hats to wear see below about loud music though

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Capellan de Getsemaní in Cartagena for a full week, and it truly felt like a home away from home.

From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was exceptional. Rey, the doorman, was incredibly warm, attentive, and welcoming—he set the tone for our entire stay. Yerlis at the front desk was equally wonderful. She was always helpful, knowledgeable, and ready to answer any questions we had, making everything seamless and stress-free.
We were especially impressed by the dining experience.

Lis and Tatiana provided outstanding service—both were professional, attentive, and very helpful when it came to ordering and serving our meals. Their kindness did not go unnoticed.

Alejandro also stood out during our stay. He was not only hardworking and always keeping everything clean, but also very friendly and welcoming. He was the one who assisted us to our room when we first arrived, which made a great first impression. You can truly tell he takes pride in his work, and he always had a smile on his face.

The hotel itself is very clean and peaceful, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. And I have to mention the breakfast—fresh, delicious, and something we looked forward to every single morning!

Overall, this hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff made our experience unforgettable, and we would absolutely return and recommend it to anyone visiting Cartagena.

Had an incredible experience at the Capellan Hotel in Cartagena!! On a Daddy-Daughter trip while my daughter was in town. We had a bal and the team at the hotel was incredible. The Clero restaurant team made us feel at home and the front desk team helped us carve out a great experience. Thanks to William, Lis, Jennifer, Natalie, Yersel and Rey!!!!! I had a fantastic stay at this hotel and would happily return. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming from the moment I arrived. The staff were incredibly attentive and genuinely friendly, always happy to help with anything I needed. The pool area was amazing – clean, well maintained, and a perfect place to relax. The location is also brilliant, with everything I wanted to see and do within easy reach.
Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

The Hotel is beautiful and well taken care of. The location is also very good if you want to be in Getsamani, and easy walk to Centro.

The food service needs to be greatly improved. There is great ceremony over breakfast but the food is bland and tasteless. Even the coffee wasn't great.
Same with the bar service by the pool. Things take much too long and the food is just not good, even with the low expectations for hotel food

And we waited half an hour for a drink as even tho there is a bar in the pool area he had to get the drinks from ground floor main bar.
Beautiful hotel charging top dollar should get it's amenity offerings to a better quality both of the food and service.
We did not experience any noise issues and again the decor is gorgeous altho I agree with another reviewer who commented on poor use of space within guest rooms.
Last small quibble, came in with an AMEX reservation that entitles me to a late check out if available which I would have liked. They upgraded me to a room without telling me they had an incoming reservation so morning of check out we were unable to keep the room beyond normal check out.
Could have let me know when upgrading that I would be unable to keep the room late (as it is a perk of my reservation) and perhaps choose a different room...the hotel was def not full so other rooms were available

This restaurant was great, food was incredible but Jennifer was the greater that everything mentioned before. She was kind and very professional, keep up Jennifer with that attitude.

I booked through Amex Travel’s Hotel Collection and received everything I was expecting. The hotel is located perfectly within walking distance of everything I wanted to do. Everyone treated me well during my stay. I will be back another time. Thank you.

Great place to eat, the menu is amazing, if you are a foodie this is the place to visit.
Jennifer took care of us and she did an amazing work.
Also it is a good place to have drinks.

Stunning property. In à renovated old colonial building. With a cute rooftop pool
And jacuzzi. Great size family room, we travelled with 12 and 13 year olds and were very happy with the size and comfort of the beds. Breakfast is delish staff are friendly. Location is excellent in Gestamani close to everything.

Great stay at Capellan! The staff were so friendly, the daily breakfast was excellent, and the location is truly perfect. Some of the city's best restaurants and its best coffee roaster are a 5-minute walk, but you're also close to the port and the old city. Nicely designed hotel with a great little rooftop.

I really wanted to love this hotel. I really did!They have a stunning courtyard, some beautiful public spaces and the staff are so lovely and caring. But there were just a couple things I couldn’t get over during my 4 night stay.

I guess it’s the architectural style, but the rooms are extremely dark. Super tiny windows, no natural light, very little interior lights and it was quite hard on my elderly parents who already have poor eyesight.

Secondly, was the street noise. While you’re extremely central in Getsemani, it means you’re gonna hear the crowds, music and party buses—especially on the weekends. It eventually dies down past midnight. But bring earplugs.

Lastly is the layout of the room. We opted for the Jr Suite which has lots of space—but it’s not well used. It’s just a big open room that’s simply not functional, and they kind of plopped random furniture around. Maybe it’s meant to be “charming” but the decor and layout of my Jr Suite was different from the Jr Suite my parents were in. Also, there was no desk area in my Jr suit which made it very awkward to do work. In retrospect l, I would opt for the Superior room w/ jacuzzi instead which (although smaller) utilizes the space much better.
