Everything about this hotel is extraordinary-from its architecture (love neo-gothic architecture) and rich history to its beautiful aesthetics and outstanding staff. A great amount of care has gone into every aspect of the interior decor, creating unforgettable atmosphere. And the hallways smelled so good!!!
It is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

My stay at 1898 The Post was outstanding. Perfectly located in the heart of Ghent, the hotel offers a unique atmosphere that blends historic charm with modern comfort. The rooms were stylish, comfortable, and impeccably clean, while the overall experience provided excellent value considering the location and character of the property. Despite being in the city center, the noise level was surprisingly low, allowing for a peaceful stay. The staff were friendly, professional, and attentive throughout, and the amenities were thoughtfully designed to complement the hotel's heritage. It truly felt like staying in a beautifully preserved piece of history.
Thank you for ALL!
Absolutely brilliant stay. Just a shame it was for just one night.
Perfect central location, great views from our windows
Comfortable bed. Good night's sleep
Staff were very polite and informative
Would definitely stay again. Thankyou
We loved everything about our stay at the 1898 Post Hotel. The reception staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our 3-night stay. We were in the lovely Suite 18. The decor and amenities were superb. Breakfast was enjoyable served in the hotel bar. The breakfast offerings, including the cooked eggs and bacon, were delicious. We also enjoyed well-crafted cocktails one evening in the bar. One of my favorite remembrances of the hotel is the smell throughout the hotel. I found the scent to be heavenly. 🥰
Great location in the heart of Ghent.
Set in a gorgeous historical building with high ceilings and signature air perfume, this hotel feels like pure luxury. The incredible staff make every effort to accommodate. It’s more than a splurge and a stop in a beautiful city — it’s my (re)treat.
L’emplacement idéal.
This was the best hotel experience of my life. From the moment we arrived, the staff went out of their way to make sure we felt welcome and our every need was met. The room (Letter) was beautiful and truly unique with the shower upstairs. It felt spacious and was well appointed. We left an item in the room after checkout and the hotel contacted us, providing multiple options for its return.
The Cobbler cocktail bar was another standout feature. The bartenders obviously have a passion for their craft. I asked about local liquors and next thing I knew, they spent 30 minutes talking through various liqueurs and distilleries in the area.
We will definitely return on our next trip to Ghent.
We stayed in this beautiful hotel for 4 nights, which allowed us time to explore Ghent and some other Belgian towns.
The hotel is in the heart of Ghent, right next to the river. It was easily accessible from the bus we took after leaving our car in the Park and Ride on the outskirts of town.
On arrival, we were checked in and offered a complimentary glass of prosecco, which was a nice touch.
Our room was lovely-two floors, filled with little touches to remind us of the hotel’s past as a post office. Everything we could possibly need was there for us. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was powerful, there was a huge tv and a kettle and coffee machine.
On exploring the hotel, we were struck by the beautiful design, including the winding staircases and the “honesty room” where alcohol was available 24 hours-you just have to sign to say you’ve had some!
The staff were all friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.
Wonderful hotel, iconic old building located right in the action on the main square. The hotel staff service was very good and couldn’t be faulted. Our rating was influenced more by our room (being split over two levels) which was really hard to work with as the bed and bathroom were upstairs and the toilet and wardrobe downstairs. Stairs were narrow and dark. The bed was a good size and comfy but you couldn’t walk down both sides of the bed and therefore it was very tight.
When we stayed there was a special event being held in the square which involved music and food that went on until 11-12pm which you could hear (as the room had a great view onto the square) but not so that it kept us awake. I mention it because some people may not like that.
The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant (other than breakfast) but there are many options very close by. We didn’t have the in-house breakfast as we thought it very expensive but friends did and said it was one of the best they have had. We had breakfast next door at one of the only places that opens early, which we enjoyed.
Overall would stay again but it would have to be one of the single level rooms. Given this and the cost of rooms, we would stay elsewhere if we came to Ghent again.
1898 The Post is a lovely hotel. Very atmospheric. Centrally located. Wonderful staff, and a nice breakfast (though the breakfast seemed expensive). The hotel is a real gem. The only downside is the rooms could be more brightly lit, especially the stairwell up to the shower and sink. Overall a wonderful experience and can highly recommend this hotel.
Nice, helpful staff; beautiful hotel full of history, good location
The location was fantastic. Right on the canal in the old part of the city. We had plenty of great restaurant, shopping and walking options available to us.
The decor of the hotel was fantastic as well with a sort of dark academia theme. The hotel was extremely well appointed in both the public areas as well as the rooms.
Speaking of the rooms, it was the first hotel room I stayed in with a loft. This had both pluses and minuses - on the plus side, a loft! On the minus side the room's sole sink was on the second floor (a sink on both floors would be appreciated especially since the toilet was on the first floor).
The rooms were well insulated from noise. We were never bothered by interior or exterior noise.
And the hotel bar had a very interesting (and good) cocktail list.
Overall I would easily stay at the Post again.
Hermoso!!! Es una castillo y la exelente atención de flor
Nada
I am a seasoned traveler with high standards, and 1898 The Post did not just meet them — it reset them entirely. The building itself is a converted Gothic post office. It is dramatic without being overdone. The room was cozy. The bedding was clean, the blackout curtains were perfect after a long day of sightseeing. Location is unbeatable. Step outside and you are staring at St. Nicholas Church with the canal right in front of you. Everything Ghent has to offer is within a short walk. The Cobbler cocktail bar is worth the stay alone. If you are debating whether this hotel is worth the splurge, it is. Full stop.
