Lovely hotel, great friendly service
Pros:

The decor of the rooms is dark and dimly lit but personally I love it, I just like that style. I also loved The Cobbler bar which happened to feature in a book we have at home called '150 bars to visit before you die' (!), well, we've done 1 of them now! Cocktails were lovely & service great. Also loved the honesty bar which we visited after the Cobblers bar (!), a great little space & as I love a whiskey before bed, just perfect. Location of the hotel was great, close to everything in Ghent, would happily return. We arrived by car and parked in the Sint Michels car park which was close by.

Beware the stairs!
Pros:

Location was excellent. Decor was high quality

Cons:

We really liked the hotel, however having the bed, shower and basin upstairs, and the toilet and lounge downstairs (very steep stairs!) was inconvenient, frustrating and dangerous when descending the stairs at night to visit the toilet.

The highlight of our trip.
Pros:

We made our best memories here at 1898. It was truly a highlight of our trip. From the staff, the room, the breakfast and the location and of course the historical building. Truly the BEST hotel during our journey.

King of stye
Pros:

Very stylish hotel with an enormous effort on little details. Would you expect a cocktail bar (with a shaker and ready made ingredients) in your room along with the regular minibar? That is just one example. From the lamp shades to the scent of the hotel as you step in this is the warmest, coziest hotel I've been to.

The Porters Lodge was a fabulously quirky house in a characterful, quirky city.
Pros:

The staff couldn't do enough for us and were extremely hospitable. The room was amazing, with a large terrace over-looking the canal. So many details were delightfully surprising: Gerlain toiletries, a bedside book of 500 places worth visiting in Ghent, cards and dice in an inlaid box, truffles, macarons, cocktails, a yoga mat/ blocks and straps, a hand written card with a thoughtful message - even the umbrellas were well designed and made. We'll be back.

Cons:

Its a higgledy piggeldy building - lots of stairs, tight spaces - confusing at first - but also part of its charm.

Parfait
Pros:

Le service du personnel
L’accueille avec une petite coupe
Leur gentillesse
La décoration de l’établissement
La qualité des produits

Cons:

S’il faut citer quelque chose de négatif , juste la fréquentation devant l’établissement en soirée n’est pas très recommandable mais rien à voir avec l’établissement qui est parfait

Historic luxury in the heart of Ghent
Pros:

What a hotel to have a first time experience in Gent. The old world style with modern amenities was the perfect way to start our first time in Belgium. The history and the decoration is historic, but comfortable. The hotel is in a great location to go south to coffee, shops, and bookstores or East for shopping or north for the cultural old town. The service is wonderful from the front desk, but especially the cobbler bar where you can get some of the most inventive cocktails in Europe. Make sure to add the breakfast as part of your stay because it’s very relaxing with many great choices, including fresh juices made to order eggs and coffee that never stops the charcuterie changes daily so it’s very nice to try different things. Ask for a little bonus, check out the honor bar, which is well appointed with some historic giniver. The mini bar has batch cocktails, which are nice as well as the house beer made a special for the post. Can’t wait to come back and enjoy our historic ghent their patio on the river.
