We had a very enjoyable stay at Torel Avantgarde in Porto. It is a beautifully designed hotel with real character, a wonderful atmosphere and stunning views accross Porto to Gaia. There is a choice of two pools and a well equipped spa.
We stayed in the Orson Welles room, one of the hotel’s Signature Rooms, and unfortunately we did not feel that the room quite lived up to either the “Signature” description or the price. The floor was noticeably uneven and extremely creaky, to the point where simply walking around the room created a surprising amount of noise. While we appreciated the individuality and character of the room, for the premium being charged we had expected a higher standard of comfort and finish along with clear views accross Porto. The view out of the room was restricted by a large tree despite the photos showing a clear view of Porto.
The other aspect that fell slightly short was the level of engagement from some of the staff, particularly at breakfast. While service was generally efficient, we felt that more warmth, attentiveness and genuine interaction with guests would have elevated the experience considerably. At times there was general grumpiness, aloofness and no smiling or welcome. It felt slightly at odds with the welcoming and personal service one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
We enjoyed our stay mainly due to the location, views, pool & spa and delicious breakfast. There is much to recommend about Torel Avantgarde. It is a distinctive and memorable hotel in Porto, but greater attention to the quality of the premium rooms and a warmer, more engaging approach to service would make the experience much more deserving of its positioning and price.
Stunning views
Lovely pools and spa
Location
Staff not friendly or interested in engaging about stay
Room very overpriced as thought we had paid for room with a view but huge tree restricting view
A fantastic place and a great stay overall.
We stayed in the maisonette (Alfred Hitchcock room) for our wedding night. A few minor things that could have been better. The gate to the room was in need of repair and a few minor things in the room, like the flame effect fireplace not able to be used in summer. Main thing was the description of a maisonette (I believe now changed on their website since we booked) where in reality it is on one level, not two. But from the photos it appears a duplex, but that is actually the balcony of the rooms above.
None of this takes away though from a terrific stay, great customer service, amazing breakfast and complimentary extended check out offered. And you won't get better in Porto for views of the river and your own private pool and jacuzzi. We shall be back in the future!
Good location, very nice view. The hotel and the rooms are carefully decorated.
Was absolutely perfect. Location, service, amnesties, food and staff made our 4 night stay exceed expectations. Only thing i would point out is the poor lighting in the room.
The hotel was absolutely beautiful and immaculately clean. The staff went above and beyond to make you feel welcome and were always helpful! Highly recommend!
Everything!
The room lighting. Was quite dark
Breakfast was excellent. So much choice, and they do cater to those with gut sensitivities. Everything is made fresh. Location wasn't bad. 1215- minute walk to the Clerigos.
Service was slow during dinner in the evening.
Beautiful hotel with the friendliest staff that go above and beyond for guests. Our room was very clean and spacious and house keeping came and did turn down service every night which was lovely. The hotel restaurant was also amazing, breakfast was really nice, lots of choice every day and you are able to order extra dishes. Location is perfect just a 10 minute walk away from the city centre and 5 minute uber to the Ribeira which was perfect. All round our expectations were always exceeded and my sister and I had the perfect time in Porto. We can’t wait to come back! Thank you all for our lovely stay and experience ! :)
Le personnel était au petit soin, toujours à l'écoute avec pleins de petite attention. La chambre incroyable avec une magnifique vue. Très bien insonorisé et confortable. Le petit déjeuné très copieux et excellent.
Pour notre part rien du tout.
The hotel is in a good location in Porto and has great views. But for a 5 star hotel, it left a lot to be desired.
The staff was lovely and Mauricio at the bar was excellent, the highlight of our stay.
The other highlight was the breakfast service. For food that was complementary, I found it a great start to each day.
Here are some of the items for improvement:
- One of their two pools looks like it is supposed to be a large hot tub. Very weak jets. Just a lukewarm pool at best. For a 5 star hotel, it is not up to par.
- I went to the front desk and requested an extra water bottle or asked where I may be able to find one. They said one water bottle per room max and no, everywhere is closed. Neither of these were true. I walked myself to a tiny store with a fridge where I grabbed the water I wanted. Water is a basic necessity and an easy request from a guest and that was a disappointing answer from a Michelin Key Hotel.
- The downstairs gym/locker room/steam room is a literal maze. Mirrors everywhere and if you are moving quickly you actually may run into a wall. The gym is below average. The steam room is open 12 hours but front desk told us 24 hours so we walked down there and spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why it wouldn't work. Turns out we just got told the wrong thing.
None of these areas for improvement are major. But for the price you pay, there are better options. Would absolutely stay somewhere else next time.
We stayed in the hotel for a week with our six month old. We received a very warm welcome. The hotel is well-equipped for baby guests. There was a warmed pool inside alongside the outside pool and baby shampoo and shower gel was offered as well.
The breakfast was really nice and included lots of different fruits, bread, cheese and so on. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
The restaurant at the hotel, Digby, offered an amazing menu as well. Apparently Digby is run by another company. This means that getting drinks in the evening was only possible at the bar or outside, and not in the patio since these spots were reserved for restaurant guests for lunch or for dinner. Although this was a pity, the bar was extremely cozy with a flowered ceiling.
The staff was also very correct. They handled a situation with an extremely rude hotel guest that demanded a seat in the restaurant for drinks in the evening without having dinner in a very calm manner.
If you are not used to city noise, then it is possible that it might be slightly more difficult to relax at the poolside. However, the location and the view makes more than up for this issue. If you book a hotel nearby the city center, you cannot expect to only hear cricked noise.
We had a very lovely stay at this hotel.
All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault it at all. Great atmosphere too
