Really classy place

Disappointing stay, with poor communication
We stayed at Lanelay Hall Hotel & Spa for a special break following our honeymoon and, unfortunately, left feeling extremely disappointed. For £150, we had hoped for a relaxing experience, but several issues really let our stay down.
The swimming pool was extremely noisy, with a child screaming for over an hour. I completely understand that the hotel is family-friendly, as we have a child ourselves, and I am not suggesting children shouldn’t be welcome. However, I do think clearly advertised family swimming times would be helpful so guests can plan their use of the spa facilities accordingly.
We were not made aware of the specific children’s swimming times when booking through Booking.com or when checking in. When the noise became too much, I was willing to pay an additional £50 to use the advertised Outdoor Vitality Pool instead, only to be told that this wasn’t possible because the spa staff had finished for the day. At no point had we been made aware that we couldn’t simply add this to our stay when we wanted to use it.
The other major disappointment was the lack of communication regarding food. I contacted the hotel before our visit to ask about gluten-free options because my wife has coeliac disease and needs to avoid gluten strictly. I was sent a menu that didn’t identify suitable options and was told the kitchen would contact me directly, but nobody ever did. As a result, we ate elsewhere before arriving, only to discover that there were actually several options my wife could have eaten at the hotel. Had somebody responded to my enquiry, we could have enjoyed a meal there and made better use of our time.
I raised these concerns directly with the hotel and, to their credit, management acknowledged that our dietary enquiry should have been followed up. However, despite several emails explaining the impact this had on our stay, they refused any goodwill gesture or compensation.
Beautifully designed hotel with a friendly and helpful team. The suite was spotlessly clean, spacious, and luxurious. The food was delicious, and the spa is a great feature.
