Good staff that helped us with late arrival and held our bags for late departure due to ferry times. Excellent location in centre of Kirkwall. Good breakfasts with local produce. Clean comfy beds.
Room was old fashioned and tired, bathroom needs an upgrade as toilet difficult to flush and noisy. Needs bedside lamps rather than overhead lamps where you need to get out of bed to switch them off. If 5'2" you cant reach the light switch.

Only a room with breakfast was available so I booked the room as I needed to find somewhere to stay. As my payment had included breakfast I went to the restaurant for breakfast. I asked if I could sit in a quiet corner but the staff said that this was not possible so I left without having breakfast.

The room I had was cramped and musty, the window stayed open my entire visit. Although the carpert looked new, maintence was lacking, such as issues with the shower door, burned out light bulbs, and loose hanging wall lamps that looked as if previous guests had used them to hanging heavy coats.

Cooked breakfast and porridge were good. Limited selection of other cold foods - eg croissants - or fruit to add to cereal or porridge.
Shower did not work. Hotel offered an alternative room, but we had so little time, we were unable to change. As recompense, they did provide a free dinner, which was good. A minor observation, but access to the carpark was up a couple of flights of narrow steps - which were overgrown and, when it had rained, wet.
The hotel is as clean and the room was comfortable .
I thought that the property was overpriced . I was aware that it was built several centuries ago but the interior of the rooms and dining room let it down . In trying to keep with the original features the rooms were tired and shabby and in need of a refit . I felt that it could have had some more features to link it with the area and history of the hotel itself . Room was comfortable and clean but you so are rooms in a travel lodge and the rooms and bathrooms are in need of an upgrade . Food was good and service friendly .
